Paint Color - Help

My 2003 LT top box got a bad "scratch" and my painter can't seem to match the color.

He has tried PPG and etc.
The bike is BMW Anthracite #848.

I looked at the Color-rite site, but the color they show really looks greenish to me. Mike (at Color-Rite) says it's grey.

Any other suggestions on finding a color match????

Thanks.

Do you want paint to "touch-up" or to spray? I probably can mix some Spies Hecker brand base coat. Matches much better than Color Rite but if you are just going to brush touch up color match isnt that critical.

Colors shown on a flat screen or monitor can vary a great deal from what is actually in the can. Colors may not appear the same on different screens let alone with what the manufacture actually produces. The "painter" should be able to get a good match from his supplier through the computer code. Or, let him take a reading with his computer off the old paint and let the computer do the match.

Paint Color

I need to paint the entire top of the top box. While in the trailer, the LT and GSA got together. Problem is that this mating did not result in a new BMW. All I got was a deep 3x4" paint removale down to the plastic.

So, we need to spray the paint.

My painter has tried getting a "computer" match with PPG and it didn't match. He said he would try Dupont this week.

Seems BMW has had numerous "Anthracite" colors.

This is gettin old.

I would not trust the Paint Chip they are showing on that site. The HTML color code is #999966, so they are just trying to get a rough approximation. It's not a true representation.

Blessings!

Paint Color List

K1200LT - Colors by Year

1999 - Canyon Red, Basalt Grey Metallic, Champagne Metallic
2000 - Canyon Red, Basalt Grey Metallic, Champagne Metallic, Pacific Blue Metallic
2001 - Mauve Pearl, Night Black, Toscana Green Metallic, Pacific Blue Metallic, Champagne Metallic
2002 - Night Black, Pacific Blue Metallic, Toscana Green Metallic, Mauve Pearl, Titan Silver Metallic
2003 - Titan Silver Metallic, Anthracite Metallic, Impala Brown Metallic, Night Black
2004 - Impala Brown Metallic, Night Black, Titan Silver Metallic
2005 - Ocean Blue Metallic, Dark Graphite Metallic, Light Yellow Metallic
2006 - Ocean Blue Metallic, Magnesium Black Graphite, Storm Gray Metallic
2007 - Night Black, Biarritz Blue Metallic, Storm Gray Metallic

(BMW only officially offers 3 colors per year. But many Beemers are shipped over here painted colors from previous years. Champagne Metallic and Night Black are probably the two greatest examples of these 'anomalies'.)

K1200LT - Paint Codes
Anthracite Metallic (397)
Biarritz Blue Metallic (847)
Basalt Gray Metallic (410)
Canyon Red Metallic (343)
Champagne Metallic (417)
Dark Graphite Metallic (919)
Impala Brown Metallic (418)
Light Yellow Metallic (376)
Magnesium Black Graphite (N01)
Mauve Pearl (489)
Night Black (668)
Ocean Blue Metallic (947)
Pacific Blue Metallic (441)
Storm Gray Metallic (N02)
Titan Silver Metallic (354)
Toscana Green Metallic (492)

Trim colors / codes (i.e. dash etc.)
Magnesium Metallic (957)

As expected, I found a few conflicts regarding paint code numbers. I did the best that I could. Perhaps BMW used different paint codes for the same color from year to year.

Hope this helps...

Thanks guys.

the label under the seat is 848.

On a wild idea, I went by the BMW car dealer yesterday and he gave me the phone for the guy that mixes paint for them. He uses Euro paint. Maybe he can match it.

The color is Antracite Metalic. Maybe 397 is the cross number.

Why the heck would they have two numbers for the same color???

Do you know anyone at BMW that might help.??? I have checked with 2 dealers with no luck.

David,

No offense, but I don't understand why your dealer can't help you here. I wanted my silver topbox painted to match my new GT and my dealer 'got er done'. I sent a small part to make 100% sure that the match was perfect (and it is), but it was no big deal. Maybe you or your dealer should call Rich at Roman Cycle in Ohio and ask him what the deal is. Tell him Joe Paulzee sent ya. (330) 270-2697
