I started at 14 in WV. My first powered 2 wheel ride was a 50cc Allstate Scooter. As I remember, lots of illegal rides to town and dont remember ever getting caught ! I graduated to an 80cc Yamaha 2 Stroke shortly thereafter and delivered many morning and daily newspapers on it, even in the snow !

Around 13, so before the legal age of 14 in France, on a Honda PS-50 50cc, then at 15, again before the legal age of 16 for anything larger than a 50cc, a Yamaha 100CC, twin cylinder 2 stroke 4 speed.

Like so many did, I started with the go-carts and mini-bikes early, around 10 and moved to some small dirt.trail bikes but my first real bike was at 19 and was a Yamaha TX-750. I traded my Dodge D100 truck for it. Man that thing could move and no, I didn't ride it with flip-flops

Does mounting a Briggs and Stratton 3 1/2 hp motor on my bicycle at age 12 count? I rode that thing all over those central Illinois farm roads. I even had suspension with a spring loaded front fork.

Indian Scout?? Nice ride . It was 1991 25 years ago at Age 29. 1 Year before I got married. First bike... A 1981 Honda CB 650 Custom two tone blue. Bought that bike for $750.00 Rode the hell out of it for 8 years. Then traded it in on a Brand new 1999 Suzuki VL1500 Intruder. Which I still own.The LT is only my 3rd bike. Guess I move up in weight /class pretty quick. That old Honda served me well. Got $450 on trade too.

I don't classify mine as a mid life crisis. I wanted to ride when I was in my 20's, it just took me almost 20 years to finally get to a point I could do it.

Built my first bike out of a Briggs reel mower motor and belt drive on a bicycle. Bought a Cushman Highlander with swingarm rear for $60. First real streetbike was a Honda CB 160 for $225. I have been street legal since 14 am now 65 so more than 50 years riding.

51 years ago I was 16. I had always wanted a motorcycle. I had saved $765 which happened to be the exact cost of a Honda 305 Scrambler. There went my money and all my money since.

In 1973, at 23 years old, I bought a used Honda CB360T. Graduated to a 1976 Kawasaki KZ900 that I just got rid of last week. My first BMW was a 2002 LT I bought for a retirement present in 2004.

Age 18, a Honda 305 Scrambler. I would have started earlier, but my mother was an ER nurse and would have nothing to do with her boys riding motorcycles. She had to put so many of our kind back together in her career and so it just wasn't negotiable. The woman paled when I broke the news than I bought the Honda from my buddy who was moving to Germany.

Re: age you started riding and the bke you learned on

I was in 4th grade and my dad got me a 20" bike that someone had mounted a small 2 stroke motor. By the time I was in jr high I graduated to a 1957 Vespa and would hill climb with the Triumph guys. The only motorcycle I ever owned that I didn't ride was a Sears Allstate 125. Bought it as a basket case and could never find a point plate for it.

Re: age you started riding and the bke you learned on

My Dad was in the Navy and CO of Iwakuni Naval Air Station in Japan, I was going to high school there. I got on a Honda 50 sport and proceed to crash into a fence. I convinced my pop to spring for a Honda super sport 55cc as I had no way to earn the money there. I was given a very long leash. A couple friends and I spent a year or so traveling around in three day trips on southern Honshu, Japan. It was the very early 60's and folks in the rural areas were not used to non Japanese. I have fond memories and the super way strangers were treated. I lived in Iwakuna south of Hiroshima. There was a local museum that had an amazing collection of Samurai swords. I went there week after week for a long time. Finally the old fellow running the place took me in the back. Wow, absolutely out of hand with antiquity and beautiful swords, the soul of the owners. The place was just full of people who would take you in for lunch if you were sitting out front of a shop. So different from here.
Next bike was a basket case 1951 Harley panhead. All down hill from there.

Re: age you started riding and the bke you learned on

This will give you the origin of my BMW LT handle. In 1971 I bought a 1970 Norton 750. Taught myself to ride and loved the bike. Rode it until I got married in 1972, had a baby and let the wife talk me into selling it, I was so damn dumb. Regretted selling the bike ever since. From 1975 after the divorce I bought a Triumph 441 and started trail and enduro riding, then bought a 1977 Yamaha IT 400 and seriously rode enduro races for three years in the East Coast Enduro Association. I really got dumb again and married for the second time in 1981 and let the wife talk me into selling my bikes. Do you see a pattern developing here. Did not ride for 20 years and then after the divorce in 2000 I bought a 2001 Triumph Trophy 1200 and started road riding again. Then in 2008 saw the 2007 BMW LT sitting on the showroom floor took it for a ride and had to have it. I have been engaged for ten years now and thank God She loves to ride. Matter of fact our first date was on my bike for a ride to the restaurant to test her out, she passed the test when asked when could we ride again.

Everyone have a Safe and Happy New Year

Re: age you started riding and the bke you learned on

I was 15 in 1969. Probably the youngest person at Woodstock with the oldest (my dad). I bought a Sears Puch 125 just before I turned 16 and had to ride on a learner's permit (daytime only). A friend had a Lambretta scooter, also a 125, and the motors harmonized nicely together. Seems I was on again, off again over the years... A 1968 Triumph Trophy 500 bought in 76, Yamaha Special II in 81, 1998 Triumph Trophy 1200 (still sitting in my garage) and my 2002 K1200 LTE bought 3 years ago. I expect we'll grow older together. Sure wish there were more folks in the Southern Maryland area to ride with.

1998 Triumph Trophy 1200
1982 Yamaha Special II 650 (sold)
1968 Triumph Trophy 500 (sold)

Re: age you started riding and the bke you learned on

I started riding at 14 on various Hondas (50 + 100 as I recall) that a good friend would rent for me. He was also kind (stupid ?) enough to provide me with his license which contained only basic identifying information typed onto the small card-no photos back then (I reveal this only because the statute of limitations has expired !). At 16, I took my motorcycle exam and passed with ease because of all of the miles and experience I already had. Once legal, I purchased a Honda 305 Scrambler and the rest is history some 51 years later, after having numerous bikes of all makes, some fantastic trips and experiences while meeting lots of great folks along the way.

Hey, the Honda 305 scrambler was a classic. I so wanted one of those when I lived in Japan. The ones there did not have the end of the pipes silencer like the US model.

Re: age you started riding and the bke you learned on

My dad bought me a Honda mini-trail Z50 to keep me in junior college in the late 60's. Graduated to a Honda XL350 trail bike in 1972. Went to university on it where I met the wife who rode with me back then. Gave the bike to my brother when I got married but the wife found a 1980 Honda Silverwing 500 for us to ride on when the kids went out to college in the late 90's. Rebuilt 7 or 8 of those, still have a 650, but we bought the LT in 2004 when the kids graduated as our own graduation present! Bought two sidecars when the grand children came along. Modified the Velorex as a semi leaner and then bought a full leaner Fleximum for the LT.
Am currently rebuilding a Z50 which will probably get the grandkids hooked for life!

12 years old, on a 1963 Cushman Super Silver Eagle, that was in 1971.

After riding with me for 35 years, my better half started with a 250 Yamaha Virago, and this year graduated to a 2016 Indian Scout 60, all at the age of 57!

Rode my brother's 1982(?) Suzuki GS 650 at around age 13. Was not legal. Didn't really know how to ride. Actual license at age 32 and first bike was a 2001 Triumph Sprint ST.
