Wink 2004 K1200LT Stereo Replacement With handlebar controls intact

Like many on this forum and almost all K1200LT owners, the outputs on my radio failed one by one. Not wanting to pay huge $$$ for a replacement that would fail anyways, and not wanting to ship my radio to someone in Germany to fix it, I decided to tackle this problem head on.

I decided on a Sony BT5000 for several reasons:
1. It is my favorite brand
2. It has Bluetooth music/hands free calling
3. It has a remote input that I can use for the handlebar and passenger radio controls.

For a handlebar control converter I decided on the Axxess AWSC Steering Wheel Converter. Typically these units talk on the I-Bus and convert that serial data to a remote stereo input signal.

I got online to my local library and downloaded the schematics for the K1200Lt and I discovered that the I-Bus stops at the LCD display unit of the radio and does not go out to the handlebar controls. Instead the controls are individual switches that are interpreted by the LCD display unit and then converted to I-Bus signals that are sent to the radio.

Not to be stopped in my tracks, I discovered (after prying the manufacturer), that the Axxess module can be wired into the individual switches, assuming you put a different resistor on each switch. You then have to manually program the function of each switch into the Axxess module.

As part of the installation I removed the stock radio connectors (ghasp!) as it made everything fit inside the water resistant enclosure.

So here is my solution, drawn up in a diagram for anyone interested. The thing works great and I am happy to be cranking the tunes to Stryper once again while cruising down the highway.

Very nice! Would you post a pic or two -- and maybe a few more details regarding the physical install -- in the stingray?

I sure will. This weekend I am buttoning up the Tupperware this weekend and moving the trunk back a notch. I will take pictures and post them by Monday evening.

I would also like to see the pics. Part numbers and such for the build would be nice also.

Re: 2004 K1200LT Stereo Replacement With handlebar controls intact

Yep, coming your way this weekend. I work a LOT of hours so bear with me until I can get to take pics.

The Axxess AWSC was purchased on Ebay, but the newer version can be found here:

http://axxessinterfaces.com/index.ph...roducts_id=197

Use an ASWC-1 and you can program multiple functions per switch, or so I am told.

The Radio is a Sony MEX-N5000BT

The resistors are 1/4 watt from radio shack or any online supplier.

I assume so, not sure what changed in 06 on the radio, if anything at all. I would start with a wiring diagram for 06 and go from there.

Photos of the stereo in the stingray. notice on the last pic all the resistors shrink wrapped in blue. Things were tight for wiring.

Pics of where I ran the mic wire in. I drilled a hole through the entry boot where all the other wires come in. I ended up smashing the end of the mic plug with pliers (stupid) and I will need to order a new mic.

The stereo works with an app and it lets you set the EQ settings and play Pandora. Requires plugging in the USB cable though.

Re: 2004 K1200LT Stereo Replacement With handlebar controls intact

I discarded the factory connectors. I had no plan to ever revert back to the stock setup, and it was impossible to get the adapter connectors and the stock connectors to all fit inside the housing. Now, one could easily put the connections outside the stingray if they wanted to. This stereo does not have a headphone jack.

Re: 2004 K1200LT Stereo Replacement With handlebar controls intact

Would the Axxess AWSC work on other stereo's?
I don't need all the bells and whistles, just a cd player and a radio with aux input and a headphone jack.

So I would need power and ground, output to speakers, just the simple connections?

Thanks...Randy

The ASWC is very versatile. The key is that your stereo must have a remote control input. I would recommend going to the Axxess web page and seeing which known stereos work with the ASWC.

Very nicely done. it just took someone that had the ambition to tackle the job and get it done.
I am sure many will have questions on how to do this on there own bike. When I get there, I may ask too.
Anyway, great job. The video was great too.

OH, yea, I am a big fan of Stryper also. (Yellow and black attack, etc)

Great little video of the functions working... only 1 very minor thing I noticed... the passenger volumes controls are upside down to the function shown on the button... + was reducing volume, - was increasing volume.
But no-one can see them when they are riding anyway, and I think the +/- symbols on the passenger button is counter-intuitive anyway.
Great job.

LOL... that would explain it.... not near my bike so can't look to see which way it is supposed to be.

Yep, + normally on top, writing is on the panel...

Looking at my 2006 wiring diagram, color coding looks the same as yours.

Now to find a stereo that will work for my needs.

Oh good grief!

Youtube tagged my video as having Eric Clapton's song in it and that is why some countries are blocking viewing of my video.

Aw come on, it's only a snippet, on a radio even!!!!!!

Oh well, not a battle I want, so my apologies if you can't view the video.

Re: 2004 K1200LT Stereo Replacement With handlebar controls intact

My plan is to add resistors in parallel of the existing ones for additional functions. According to Axxess, each wire can detect multiple resistances for programming functionality. The manual says the Axxess can be programmed for 18 different functions:
Volume up
Volume down
Seek up
Seek down
Source/mode
Mute
Preset up
Preset down
Power
Band
Play/enter
PTT
On hook
Off hook
Fan up
Fan down
Temp up
Temp down.

On the BMW we have:
CD - I am gonna make this the source button
On - I hope to make this the PTT or call answer, assuming seek up doesn't already do this.

I just checked my resistor pile and I have what I need. I need values between 1-5k and I still have:
1.2k
2.6k
2.9k
3.8k

Re: 2004 K1200LT Stereo Replacement With handlebar controls intact

Tonight I got the Tupperware off and took out the LCD display unit. It came apart fairly easy. After a lot of metering and testing, I was able to determine which solder points were the switch contacts, and which ones were the button LEDs.

I decided to connect power to the LEDs so the switches would be lit. This required me to solder in some current limiting resistors that would also drop the voltage of the bike. I assumed a running voltage of around 13.7 volts. I also assumed the LEDs required 2 volts to run. So I wanted the resistors for the LEDs to drop 11.7 volts. 11.7 divided by an assumed 5 ma current draw on the LED gave me a resistor value of 2.3K. I picked a safe value of 2.7k and hooked it up temporarily using a power supply. The LEDs seemed to be the correct brightness so I went with that.

I then tied all the commons of the LEDs to the commons of the 3 switches I wanted. I attached an LED inline with the other side of each switch, a different value for each switch.

I chose the following values that I had not used yet, knowing that the Axxess looks for values between 1-5k:
CD button 3K
Mem button 2.7K
On button 3.8K

I decided to reuse the LCD panel wiring harness connector to get my wires external to the unit. I still had the mating connector from my earlier hacks. The solder pads for the connector is where I ran my wires to. I also ran common and LED supply to the same connector.

A quick test between common and each Switch proved that the resistor values were metered when I pressed a button. Another test applying 13.7 volts to the connector proved the LEDs lit up on the 3 switches. I reassembled the unit and am ready to install it into the bike and wire it into the Axxess module. I hope to do that tomorrow. I took lots of pictures and will update my schematic once I am sure it works. More to come.

Re: 2004 K1200LT Stereo Replacement With handlebar controls intact

What I ended up with was the CD button being for answering calls. At first I made it my source button, which was nice, but then I realized I had no button for answering calls. I took the lazy route and didn't add another button because I had already buttoned everything up.

The MEM button became my preset station up.

The ON button became just the opposite, it turns the stereo off. When you hit source on the BT5000, it turns on the radio. since I got rid of the CD button being source, I sacrificed a way to turn on the radio except directly on the radio controls .

These pictures show the screws I had to remove to get the LCD unit out of the stingray and down to the circuit board.

The board once removed. You need to be careful with waterproofing seals on the enclosure.

This picture shows the CD button with respect to the connector. 2.7K resistors (not 2K like the picture says) were soldered onto the anode of each LED. I chose a 3K for the switch resistor.

This picture shows the MEM switch and ON switch with respect to the connector. I added the 2.7K resistors to the LED Anodes.

Since one side of each switch goes to common, and the cathode of each LED goes to common, I used a solder bridge to connect them together. Later I will tie them all to a common ground wire.
I also added a 2.7K resistor for the MEM button and a 3.8K resistor for the ON switch.

I did the same for the CD switch, bridging the switch common and LED Cathode.

Here I have added the commons all tied together. The blue wire sticking up will go to the connector on the other side of the board.
