View Full Version : Flag Pole for the LT

Since I've been attending a few PGR missions in the recent past, I wanted a way to mount a large flag on the LT. I currently have two small flags tucked into the radio and Cb antennae.

A couple of weeks back, I was talking to my friend (who has some good fabrication skills and the right tools in his garage to do so) about this. We searched quite a bit around the net and on the bike. The only solution that we could come up was for me to buy a trailer hitch and then design a mounting for the flag pole.

So, then I researched the available models and was not ready to shell out the $$$ for a trailer hitch at this point in time. So, using the ideas from the different hitches, we came up with a plan and sat down the past two evenings after work for a few hours and designed this flag pole mount!!

FWIW, the mount is pretty heavy built and will withstand quite a bit of force. It mounts very easily with four bolts into the frame. No drilling required to the frame or any other parts of the bike. it is designed to be a straight bolt on!! I haven't yet tried riding the bike with a flag in the mount. Plan to do so later this evening or tomorrow. I will report back with the results.

I have to congratulate James, my friend, for coming up with this product. BTW, if there are others that might be interested, he has offered to build more of these.

I wonder what tool James uses to install a thumb tack?

And I thought I was doing good with my luggage rack and some zip ties :D. That is one sweet accessory. Maybe I can get something like that built to hook up to my Dauntless hitch mounts?

And yes, if you look at the first picture, there are two BWMs at the front of that leather clad biker parade group. This is the Bremerton Armed Forces Day Parade that was held on May 20th. Combat Veterans International has been in the parade for the last four years and has won the Best Veterans Unit Award three times and The Peoples Choice Award twice. They did a free BBQ for all active duty military and veterans. A real nice gathering.

The second picture just shows one way to get the most out of a picture of a fountain ;).

I'm still interested in your mount, but for this coming mission, I had to make
something provisional. The quickest attach point I could find was my helmet
lock system:

(no, i don't care if everyone knows my license plate number)

I fashioned a mount out of a piece of aluminum angle-iron I had laying around
by drilling two holes through which the helmet locks pass:

I'm using small bungee cords to hold up the flag in this pic, but later I made
an extensive guy-line system out of 18 feet of parachute cord.

How did it go?

I'm interested in getting more info on this mount.

So far, I have put this setup on the test bed quite a few times, and it has always come out awesome. Infact, this picture was taken yesterday on a PGR mission, I have cropped it to show you how high the flag sits on the back of the bike. I can take more pics if you want.

Drop me a PM and I can discuss the details that you want.

That looks easy to build and use, but you will have to tell me how it works at higher speeds.

Mine is built to stay in place (but can be removed / installed in less than 5 minutes)and is not so visible unless you are looking for it. Also, I just leave the flag in the mount all the time. Oh, BTW, I found this to be a nice bumper in case I back into something or someone decides to get too personal with me :D on the road!!!

While not on a PGR mission or parade etc., I normally just roll up the flag and cover it up with a vinyl bag kid of setup that is more like a cover for those lawn chairs that fold up for travel!! It has been there for over 1000 miles now!!

Nice job on garage-tech flag pole mount, Prakash. http://www.bmwlt.com/forums/images/smilies/thumb.gif

I'd be interested in seeing a bottom-up shot of the frame mounting system you guys came up with, if you can figure out how to take the picture.

Regards,
-joel

I'll see what can be done about that picture request.FWIW, the four mounts go into the four bolts for the side cases.

I have a Dauntless Hitch on the bike, so could your friend make a flag pole holder to slide in like the hitch does? If not, just have something to bolt on in place of the ball. You must have someone around you with a Dauntless hitch to look at. I will be D C in 6-7 weeks if that will help.

Looks great, Prakash. My compliments to your friend on a fine design. I'd be interested in one. Will he fabricate one, or just supply plans?

My only comment is that it looks like the tip of the flag is on the ground. Either a longer pole or somehow raising the socket a tad should help that.

(By the way, your motor vehicle inspection sticker seems to have expired 11/06. Sorry, that's the traffic cop in me talkin' :rotf: )

Tony,

The pic was taken in July or before as it was posted in July. Was legal then.

For those of you that already have a trailer hitch on the bike of your bike you might want to look at Flag Pole To Go (http://www.flagpoletogo.net/buy.htm). Scroll down to the bottom of the page.
