The Good, another great ride into work on the "new to me" LT! This bike gets better with every ride!
The Bad, The trunk latch broke last night! Actually, the black metal plate that actuateds the trunk latch broke. a piece broke out of the top left corner, where it looks like it is attached to the latch mechanism inside... Anybody else have this problem, and can just the plate/latch be replaced?

Unfortunately it is a fairly common thing with the LT. Mine hasn't done it yet.
You can't buy just the latch from BMW, you have to buy the bottom of the trunk which is expensive. There is someone that has come up with what looks to be a good alternative latch. I believe that they have it under vendors on this site.

It is VERY important that you push down on the trunk lid when using the latch...to open or close. Also, I used a Dremel on mine to get rid of a little "extra" metal to help it latch easier. I keep mine lubed too.

Sorry to hear about yours breaking. Yes, there is a vendor selling them. Not cheap, but a whole LOT cheaper than the alternative.

Happened a while ago, it is in a spot not to bother the working of the latch so I just left it alone.

Smile! I have has three K12's and everyone has had the rear trunk replaced! My dealer thinks it must be some sort of record; he was whinning again. I told him Tuff S**t if Bmw would build the trunk latches better he would not have to replace all of them.
Look for the thread on the latches; someone built a good one here on the list.

Hey Kenny,

Is the trunk latch a warranty item? My '02 is a CPO bike, so it still has warranty through July of this year. You have had luck getting BMW to replace the latches/case bottom under warranty???

Thanks,
Tom

The retaining area that holds the pin that captures the retaining strap broke on my 05 shortly after I bought the bike. Hermy's BMW in port Clinton PA replaced the bottom box and ever since the trunk latch has closed very easily. I still sometimes do still compress the lid while closing but there is hardly any effort to closing compared to the original. There is a chance the tech there did something but I did not ask.
