I have tried every fix to remove the noisy brake problem on my bike.
It was driving me nuts - to the point of spoiling the ride.

Fitted the SBS ceramic pads as recommended by others recently on this forum - no more noise! Thanks guys.

Don't know how they work - either different ( ceramic ) compound or because the pads have several grooves cut in the material, but I have had not one squeek since installation.

Brake performance seems as good as stock pads.
Don't yet know what the life is on the pads - but I don't really care if they stay quiet.

SBS part # 746LFS

Or get them here http://www.denniskirk.com/jsp/product_catalog/Product.jsp?skuId=198042

Hello:
I replaced my squealing worn rear pads with stock BMW rear pads. They were real low and this is what the local dealer had in stock.
I have put on over 1,000 miles since and the brakes are working fine with out any noise?
I was very concerned about using the BMW pads but they seem to be fine.
for at least 1,000+ miles. Denny

I've been using EBC pads with the same result. SBS pads are good...but they tend not to be as beefy, nor last as long as EBC pads do. This is my experience with 3 completely different bikes that I've experimented with. YMMV

anyone done anything on the front? The OEM pads work great on the front. I see no reason to change to another brand.

Just checked at Dennis Kirk and the sbs pads are on backorder. Anyone have a part number or a good place to get the EBC pads? ( I like to support the local dealers) and will they work on an 05?

I just talked too my Dealer and he does not stock EBC or SBS????? He did tell me that it would not void my warrantee.

The EBC pads that fit the K1200LT are:

FA304HH (Rear, all years)
FA246HH (Front, standard ABS, 1998 through 2001)
FA294HH (Front, integrated ABS)
I remember once, somebody said to NOT use sintered pads on the '05 models and newer. If that's the case...just drop the "HH" from the part numbers. Those are organic.

I bought my last ones from http://www.brocktoncycle.com/

I would suggest that you purchase the BMW pads for the front as the EBC's tend to raddle. The EBC's do not come with the pad retaining click as BMW pads.

Thanks Joe

I'm going to pick up a set before I head over to Howards for the tech session in June, that way I will have something to do on my day of learning!

Dennis kirk told me back order also and they only took 2 weeks to arrive. i think they get new shipments frequently. the ceramics are working 1,000 miles in for me. no mice in the back wheel anymore!

Still waiting for my dealer to get my SBS on back order... To keep the squeek down I have taken out the Pads and sanded them down and cleaned the disk with Brake Cleaner and put back the pads with no vibration compound and the squeek is mostly gone..... prolly won't last long - Hopefully till the new sbs pads come !

I have an 06 LT and now have over 10,000 miles on her. I have the dread LOUD squeal, not a squeak, it is a banshee squeal! I have tried everything. EBC pads, Nope. Dealer changed rotor, nope. Dealer put on new calipers, nope. Tried the shims, nope. BMW field engineer was at dealer two days ago and told me that BMWs position is that the brakes stop the bike and they do not care about the noise and I would have to deal with it. I consider this an insult. They can put a man on the moon but they cannot stop a squealing brake. I now have a set of SBS ceramic brake pads ordered in hopes that it will work. This is a terrible problem to have on a bike that costs so much. I am very frustrated.

Approaching 300 miles on the new EBC rear rotor and pads all around.

Just now starting to get a bit of a 'rumble' from the rear. Obviously rotational noise just before stop - but it's kinda muffled, not the traditional squeel at all - but something.

I'm going to hit the rotor with the brake clean tonite - see what that does.

Ya, der Germans have not puten der man on der moon. But they are supposed to have some of the most advanced tech and good engineers, always have had. The brakes are a mystery. No other Beemer squeals like this that I have ever heard of. Dealer says that is because it is so heavy. Hah, I never have heard a wing or ultra glide squealing like this. All other brake systems on beemers are mounted on top, LT on bottom. All others I have seen have drilled rotors, LT solid. If anyone else has had luck in stopping the noise on an 05 or 06 LT I would sure like to hear about it.

Just got mine (05') back from the dealer, new disc, pads and they replaced the foggy wind screen all under warranty. This is the third time for the brakes in 15k mi. Tomorrow going on a 300 mi ride so we'll see what it's like when I get home.

Uh, well - actually...

The guy who was in charge of design, development and building the Satrun V was a German. Wernher von Braun (http://history.msfc.nasa.gov/vonbraun/index.html)

OK, OK - so it was US greenbacks, organisation and determination the created the environment that allowed VonBraun to do his deeds. But the actual engineering an such was German. Directly out of the V2 program to boot.

David,

Unfortunately, that's about par for the course. The brakes squeal, they shouldn't, some dealers will replace bits and try to help, eventually they contact BMW who say "sorry, too bad". I think it sucks too, but there it is.

BMW did not put a man on the moon. If it were up to BMW, it would have been an over-engineered trip that only got halfway before breaking something that was prohibitively expensive to rectify. And they would have denied all responsibility of the problem. Then some guys with duct tape and toothpicks would have flown a home-made rocket up to save the Astronauts (American term - what would a german version be ? Deutschenauts?)

Mine squeal a little at 6900 miles. It's bearable for now, but I do follow the threads to see the latest attempts at fixing it.

Cool! One reasonably assertive slow down from about 60mph to 10 and what little 'grumble' there was is now gone again.

Note to self: if it noises up abit, stop hard.

What I get for all this slow poke downtown ride'n...
