Has anyone had trouble with J-Peg XL tip over bar "grooving" so badly on the surface that the ball bearing travels on that you can't extend or retract??

You may want to review my post concerning the problems I am having with the left J-Peg installation. It may be of help. It is frustrating.

It could be that the ball is staying in one of the holes rather than rolling between the two holes.

That is exactly what it is doing (or not).
