After a visit to Ireland recently I had some thoughts (http://www.unicornadventures.org/index.php?is-the-motorcycle-the-last-link-in-economical-evolution) about the way motorcycle do appear in a country and how this could be linked to the economical growth of the country.

Lets see what you guys think of it: do you think bikes come last in the economical growth process or is this unrelated?

Contrary to your hypothesis,
My experience has been that poorer countries, with an under-developped infrastructure, especially crowded ones, tend to turn to motorcycles as a necessary means of transportation.

Richer countries with a more developped infrastructure, tend to shy away from motorcycles, except as recreation, sport, hobby.

FedEx uses motorcycles as delivery vehicles in Brasil due to speed, economy, road width.

In Asia, Dad drives, child in front of Dad, and Mom on the back, sometimes side saddle--can't afford an auto.

When I was in India, 1990, I head the unmistakable sound of a bike I hadn't heard since the early 70s, a one lunger Royal Enfield--still in production for India.

Tons of three wheeled "taxis" and three wheeeled "trucks" based on motorcycles.

Every major intersection had traffic lights, and police who held up their hands to stop traffic when the light turned red.
