What do you consider the most importent item in your tank bag?
For me it is without a doubt, the little plastic case, that holds the baby wipes. Yep thats me over the guardrail. :D

No offense...but so far I don't see any of the things listed in this thread as "important items" for the tankbag. They can be stowed just about anywhere. When I think of tankbag items, I think of things that I need to get to in a hurry. Whether it be at a fuel stop, or even WHILE riding down the road at 70mph.
I wouldn't be without any ONE of these items on any LD trip.
Left Pocket
Rain Covers for my cell phone, FRS radio, and iPod.
Maglight Flashlight
Right Pocket
Lip Balm
A host of writing implements
Front Pocket
Rain Cover for tankbag
Squeegee for helmet shield
Main Compartment
My other two sets of gloves (I have three total)
Two pairs of glasses (clear and dark)

You've got a squeege for your helmet Joe? I like that idea. It's actually a Bondo spreader, bought at NAPA Auto Parts. About a dollar. Also works on the dash and windshied very well. It's about 2" x 3".

Actually, if its real important, you should be carrying it on you!
Guys have crashed and as they parrted with their rides dropped off into a ditch or over a slope. If their cell phone was in the Tank Bag, they'd have been screwed.
I don't want to be without my wallet, cash, cell phone, spare reading glasses, spare key, Medical Info, etc. Period. I want those important things with me at all times.
My Tank Bag is reserved for maps, Cliff Bars, camera, sunglasses, and such expendibles.

Joe, what good would a hand gun or garage door opener do you in the trunk or side case? We've had threads regarding guns several times. I've finally come to the conclusion that I need a gun on a bike, like a hole in the head. I ain't Clint Eastwood...or Billy the Kid. And neither are you. Nor do I want to know all the laws of each and every state I'm running through. So, you can keep your gun. Chances are, one day it's going to get you into more trouble than it will get you out of.
As for the garage door opener...I like mine under my GPS shelf. I just reach out and hit the button on my way up the drive. Not that it's a bad item for a tankbag. But, "the most important"? Naw...

Joe:
I view a handgun like insurance. Hope you never need it but if you do, hope it's there for you.
Guess I'll have to hang a garage door on my car port so's I can get a garage door opener.

Even if your not going to shoot someone, certain pistols are the perfect size for knocking out the driverside window of the cage that is to close. The pistol just being an added symbol of "Get out of my space" :D
I have learned extremely fast, that the fairing on the LT, prevents you from kicking off their side mirror.
Then their is always the case of the guy in NJ last fall, cage cut off bike with left turn. Wreck happens, person driving cage comes up to the dying rider, biker shoots him 3 times before he dies. ;) Now that is justice

There are a lot of God forsaken, lonely roads in Texas. You never know what you'll find. Sometimes it's not a someone, but a something, like a beeg ol' steenky rattlesnake. Pop him in the head and get some mighty fine rattles in the bargain.
I kinda like the idea of taking the dumbshit out who is causing you to die. Kick his ass at the gates of hell?
