Hello Guys,
Are your rear brake disks noisy, if so, what did you do about it.
I have attached the photo from BMW's database of the rear disk. As you can see from the drawing, it gives the impression that the disk is not floating. but the disk is a floating disk, thats clear from visually inspecting it and from holding the disk.
On my R1100RT, I replaced the bobbins that the disk floats on but I am not sure if there are bigger difficulties with this disk.
Any experience from you all on this?
Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi,
I had the same problem and followed a suggestion on this site. Fit EBC HH pads and the noise just goes away.

Yep, what he said. If you are having squealing problems when stopping, the EBC HH pads on the rear are the answer. Available many places.

Hello Guys,
Sorry, I should have been more clear, it is not sqealing, the floating disk is rattling like a 'good thing'. It is typical, it never bothered me until recently, but now it is driving me crazy, simply because I am listening for it.
I am hoping that I do not have to replace the whole disk assembly, but I cannot find out from the dealer what to do about it.
Any thoughts?
Thanks

Hello Guys,
I just had a detailed look at that parts list as mentioned on RealOEM, (thats for that from a previous post Meese). Again, it only lists a disk assembly, it does not suggest that I can just replace the loose bobbins that are allowing it to float and rattle.
Here is the URL is anyone has any thoughts on it, watch the wrap.

Thanks to all.

Mark,
I believe you are right in assuming that a person has to replace as an assembly. IIRC the "Bobbins" are actually a rivet assembly and not available seperately. :( :(

The rear disk is floating on flanged (buttons, bobbins, bushings, take your choce) which are riveted to the carrier, unlike the front disks which are floating on screw attached (whatever you want to call them). :D
BMW ETK says they are "Roll Pins". Strange, Roll pins are a common hardware item, and those BMW parts are NOT roll pins.

Thanks guys for the help,
At least there is one upside, I do not have the only K1200LT in Ireland with floating disk, that was also making me very anxious.
This morning, I will see can I live with the infernal rattle, I sound like a scap metal dealer with a very loud radio.
Thanks again for all your input.

Mark: You don't list the year of your LT. If it's still under warranty let your dealer know about the excessive play/rattle. It should be replaced if your warranty is still in effect. I had my rear rotor replaced under warranty on my 03 for this very thing. The replacement stayed rattle free. No issues with my 05 thusfar. Dick

That's what I had to do to Mark. Seemed like the cost was about 318 bones at one of the local BMW shops. If you could afford to be down a while you might want to see what Spiegler (http://www.spieglerusa.com/cfm/bmwrotors.cfm) could do. And I think you'd get a cross drilled rotor in the process.

Hello Guys,
Well I phoned the dealer today and asked what the price of a new disk is and was told 250 Euro.
I have no intention of paying 250 euro to replace a perfectly good disk and assembly, just to acquire the bobbins, bushings, bushes that they float on.
Instead, I am going to turn up my radio and sing along to the music. And if I get sick of the radio, I might spend the 250 on a iPod instead.
Have you guys all had the same noisy, rattley experience? did you change the disk? I only saw one other post on here about this from someone in Greece.
Thanks any for all your help,
Mark

What year is your LT? I had the same problem with my 05 LT and it was repaired under warranty. You may be eligible for same no cost repair.
