My icelink has killed my battery, I have just ordered a new one. I would like to fix this before I install the new battery. I know its the icelink because it is warm even with the ignition to the locked position. I have searched and have read about a lot of people wanting to power the icelink only when the bike is running or at least in the switched ignition. Anybody find a way?

...wanting to power the icelink only when the bike is running or at least in the switched ignition. Anybody find a way?I didn't do it (yet), but it is very simple. All you need to do is install a switch on the power leads from the CD changer cable. OR...(the way I would do it) is to install a relay from a switched power source, and have the relay turn the ice>Link on and off automatically.

I can give you more specifics if you need them (i.e. wire colors, connections, etc...).

Thanks Joe,
Its easy enough for me to get the multi meter out and poke around but I bet there are a lot of people wanting to do this. So, If you have the wire color handy that would be great. If not handy I will post the info as soon as I can get to it.

I traced the power lead back to where it came close to my Blue Sea Fuse block that is switched by the ignition; I cut it and connected it to the fuse block and taped up the other end, so now it is only powered when the ignition is on.

I switch it.
I used an spare PIAA lights switch (with green/red led), to tap from inside the lugage box and put the switch outside.
I tought about doing a direct connection to a 'key on' connector, but then I decided that some times, when camping, I want to have the cell charging and/or iPod plaiying for while.
Can take a picture of it tonight if you want to see.

Both ideas sound great, thanks. They give me something to think about. Is there a power source I can tap into that has no power when the steering is locked but has power when the ignition is off but steering is unlocked?

I went to the garage and poked around till I came across with a plan I liked. I've installed a blue sea fuse block over the battery some time ago. I have always hated it there. So, I decided to move the fuse block to the former location of the charcoal canister. I ran power from the battery to a circuit breaker from there to a 40 amp relay. from the relay to the blue sea positive post. The relay is controlled by a 12vdc source and a ground. I used the load side of fuse number 8 for this. This is the green wire of the bottom fuse of the middle fuse block thats under the rear seat. It powers the radio and chart light. (15 amp fuse) The green wire is not powered when the ignition key is off and steering is locked. But it is powered when the key is turned to just short of starting. (Accessory mode) This is where you turn the key to listen to the stereo when the bike is not running. I then cut out the inline fuse for the icelink and wired it to a fuse on the fuseblock. All is now good!!!! I can take a few pictures tomorrow if anyone wants to see it. I also installed the Ipod in the oddments box.

Sounds good Brian. The only thing you have to remember now is to turn the key completely OFF to keep the ice>Link from draining your battery.

I am in the habit of doing the steering wiggle test and double check for parking lights on before I walk away!!

I found this on the Dension web site, has anyone tried this?

How ice>Link Plus charges iPod?
Article ID: 000034

Problem: How ice>Link Plus charges the iPod? Can I control it to protect my battery?
Solution: ice>Link Plus offers three different charging mode, which can be selected in a menu:
- charge always when iPod is on, max 2 hours after ignition turned off
- no charge
- charge while ignition is on

How ice>Link Plus charges iPod?Yes...I have experimented with all three charging modes, and the newer version (version 2.x) ice>Links will still discharge the LT's battery ALL of the time, regardless of the position of the ignition switch.

Hi Brian,

I'm in the process of doing the same to my IceLink as I don't like it to be hot and draining my already stressed battery all the time.

Now as I was poking around with a multimeter I found TWO wires that are hot all the time. (Now I'm talking about the smaller 3 pin CD changer connector.) What I did, simply cut them both and re-powered them from a switched source.
Well, I should have known better... Now the Icelink does not work at all as obviously only one of the cables had continuous power and the other one was powered since it is connected to the first one at the radio or handlebars end.

My question is: Which one of the two contiously powered cables you cut and re-power from a switched source? Sorry as I am not close to my bike I only remember that one of the wires was more white and the other one more red...

Regards

Hello Ari,
I rewired mine at the inline fuse in the icelink harness, Left all the other wiring the same. If you follow the icelink cable you will find a mini fuse. I cut it there and stowed the power side and spliced in my new power.

Yikes. Sounds like you cut the IBUS wire. Here's the schematic of the 2 plugs that go into the CD Changer (I think this is what the LT's CD Changer plugs look like, I found this researching how to add a changer to a CL) The 2nd is the back of the CD Player in your stingray.

And this link here draws out pretty well how the CD Changer harness is wired into the CD Player (it's the instructions to adding a CD Changer to a BMW car that is not prewired):

Good luck.

Hey, thanks a bunch.:D Your schematics tells it all (just as I suspected it to be...)

I obviously cut the bus wire so now I just have to fix that and just leave "Vbat" wire re-powered from my switched source.

Of course I could have figured this out by trial-and-error -method but your info helps a lot! I should have asked before I did my first trial...Oh well, this is not the first time I do the oops...

And to Brian: Thanks for your reply as well, but I already have so many wires coming through the saddlebag grommet (my GSM-alarm) that I rather do the wire splicing on the outside of the saddlebag.

Best regards to both of you
I just love this site!!:bmw:
