I usually start with the letters that come on the liscense plate. I've had a Gina (GNA) and Ethyl (ETL) and a Stevie (STV). I know Stevie was kind of lame, but there was an episode of Friend where that's what Joey called his TV - Stevie the TV. I thought it was hilarious.

Gina was actually a car and then it became a joke between my wife and I that Gina was the "other woman". Now that I have this bike and I ride so much, she started calling my bike Gina and it stuck.

Good luck!

You don't make up a name, you discover it.
Be patient, your bike will let you know its name after you get to know each other............................................

Hopefully it won't end up with an earned nickname like "The Money Pit", "The Black Hole", "The college Fund" etc. once you start having to pay for the service on these beasts.

I call mine...ok get ready for this....it's original.....

my motorcycle

Sometimes I might call it "the beemer"...or perhaps even "the bike"

Sorry couldn't resist. Have never thought much of "naming" my inanimate possessions. Much the same as I wouldn't name my car

I don't normally name my bikes except when they remind me of a past "lady" friend. Big Red comes to mind she wasn't tall or heavy but she shure was curvy, top heavy just like the LT ;).

"The Beerburner" I wanted a Harley Davidson. after renting one for a week the wife HATED it. I could not buy a rice burner, (Hondakawazuki). A friend recomended the BMW, let us take his for a test ride. after 15 mins Miss E said: "This'll work!" didn't take long to come up with "The Beerburner".

Just let it happen! it'll come to you.

Go to the nearest Wal Mart. Park directly in the front, pretend that you've deployed the side stand. Dismount and aptly call her: "Tipsy"
If nothing else, It's the truth! It reminds me of the owner who when asked how many times he'd dropped his K 1200 he replied "Does throwing it down count" :p

I didn't think I would ever come up with a name for my LT, and then it hit me. "Gray Ghost" describes the color, the fact that it's fast (are ghosts fast...?), and the alliteration is interesting. The name itself came to me after I snapped this picture. I was on the way to STC and this rider-less LT was right on my tail the whole way down there. I thought a ghost must be riding it. The name then came to me. The GRAY GHOST must have been riding!

I used the color of mine to come up with it's name...

It's a 2000 Basalt.

So I just added a "D" and got "BaDsalt". I love the name.

BUT...

I've considered a name change because I thought of a
better suited name...but I can't bear to do it.

The name of my next bike will be:

"FreeBird" MUCH more appropriate due to my last name
and the feeling that riding gives me.

Here is a copy of a playful suggestion I posted on the old site.

On the issue of naming bikes, and with apologies to T.S. Eliot, I'd like to
offer the following reflections:

The Naming of Bikes

The naming of Bikes is a difficult matter,
It isn't just one of your holiday games;
You may think at first I'm as mad as a hatter
When I tell you, a Bike must have THREE DIFFERENT NAMES.
First of all, there's the name that the family uses daily,
Such as Trigger, Red Rider, or James,
Such as Victor, Undaunted, Lightning or Bavarian Steed--
All of them sensible everyday names.
There are fancier names if you think they sound sweeter,
For some gentlemen, some for the dames:
Such as Tipper, Beast Eater, Erasmus, Pandora--
But all of them sensible everyday names.
But I tell you, a Bike needs a name that's particular,
A name that's peculiar, and more dignified,
Else how can he keep his line perpendicular,
Or spread out his air wings, or cherish a ride?
Of names of this kind, I can give you a quorum,
Such as Munkustrap, Quaxo, or Coricopike,
Such as Bombalurina, or else Jellylorum--
Names that never belong to more than one Bike.
But above and beyond there's still one name left over,
And that is the name that you never will guess;
That name that no human research can discover--
But the BIKE HIMSELF KNOWS, and will never confess.
When you notice a Bike in profound meditation,
The reason, I tell you, is always the same:
His mind is engaged in rapt contemplation
Of the thought, of the thought, of the thought of his name:
His ineffable effable
Effanineffable
Deep and inscrutable singular Name.

heheheDude, they did, but when your wife wants to go with you and wants to go traveling/touring the area while you are off on the LT enjoying the ride she needs something to drive. It seems like a fair compromise.

And no, she doesn't want her own bike.

I've called my bikes various names at times (usually when working on them, or standing beside one that refused to run on the side of a very lonely road) but none of the names have stuck (thankfully), nor could I repeat any of them here in a public forum.
No, I do not give names or assign personality traits to mechanical things. I've been working on them too long to get attached on any emotional level to something that eventually I may hit with a hammer.

The signature block gives the reason for my LTs name - Given that yours is Red, how about the Latin for the Red Snapper family (Pagrosomus) - Call it Pagro - it'll certainly get people asking you why...!! :D

My name came naturally, it had a Red dragon painted on the front lower left fairing and front fender. Has a little devilish look on his face.

Greetings.

Funny how I just read the above responses, because today while out riding I was pondering the question of what to name the LT. I thought something with perhaps Germans roots would be most appropriate. Something huge, powerful and considering BMW's history, something with a little military bearing. Suddenly the name Bismark came to mind. And so the naming ceremony is being planned, fine German ale will flow and I might even wheel out the "little" 1983 base K100 to join in the festivities too so that little Bavarian Belle doesn't get jealous. A name for your bike...bloody oath mate!

Kindest regards and cheers to all.

Very interesting and entertaining replies. Thanks a lot. Although I am not any closer to naming my LT. I think the best suggestion is to wait and let it come to me. I have only had it a short time and it has to be right. Some of you have come up with excellent names. The Gray Ghost story was my favorite. Nice poem also. Thanks for all the help and I will let you know when something comes up.

As I was wiping tears of blissful joy from my eyes while riding Weiter - (my 99 LTC Canyon Red inanimate object) through the loop in Yosemite Valley last June, I reflected on how appropriate the name was.
Weiter means further in German.
After learning how to ride on a '85 Kaw VN700 (15ooo mi in 3 seasons), I got the LT last March with a trip out West on the agenda.
When I got home after 4300 miles, I looked it up again, before ordering the custom plate.
Yup means further. (20k miles last year)
The second definition is more.
Says it all for this addict.

Its about 18 months and still no name. But neither do I have a name for my 93 Suburban or my bicycle.

If I could think of how to shorten "she who must be obeyed" I would use that.

I went through a book of 500 German verbs this morning (thinking that riding was action and verbs indicate action) and could only come up with smiling and dancing. But it seems that the bike is of the female gender, therefore needs a female name not a verb. Brunhilda, Helga, and Katrin are out. Still thinking.

I wonder what name she has for me?

Silly Howard. Trailers are for boats or Harleys going to bike week. ;) :por for enabling one's wife to go on the trip with you, or for picking up disabled bikes (including LTs) at events -- like CCR. :)

I like the bumper sticker I saw recently: "I took my bike to Trailer Week". :D

and for the serious half of your question Dave, I haven't ridden Wolfie for a awhile.... about 5 weeks. I had almost forgotten how fast that bike is until I took it out this weekend. My son (17 yo) got it right when he told me, "Wolfgang is stoopid fast".
