View Full Version : Question about Reverse

Yesterday while using reverse for some reason it worked for a few seconds then quit, I would depress the starter button again and it would work again only for a few seconds. I had to repeat this for a number of times to back up far enough to get out. I have never noticed this before and wondered what is going on.

The reverse on my '05 started doing the same thing 2 weeks ago. 7k miles as of today. I'm pretty sure I saw another thread here about this being symptomatic of a failed (fill in the blank -- sensor, wire, fuse, flux capacitor...). Someone knows...

I also have an Ocean Blue 05 LT with a reverse problem. MAYBE it's the colour?? Ok all kidding aside... I took the bike into the dealer last year with a reverse problem, it only backed up 4 ft. and stopped. If you pressed the button again it would back up another 4 ft... and so on), and they were so busy I didn't want to leave it for days so I rode it till November and put it away till April this year. I just took it in on an appointment and apparently it's a good thing I waited. I was told that BMW has included in their new CD, that the mechanics use to do their diagnostics, a section on reverse problems. The diagnostic told them within 15 minutes that a module down by the transmission case was faulty. Let's hope the diagnosis was correct cause that's the part they ordered to fix the backup problem. I'll let you know when they install the part.
Cheers, Bill

Take a look at the following post:

I had the same problem on my '03 and had to have the "reverse sensor" replaced under warranty.

Thanks for the reply, but this is backing out of my garage. This is my third LT and I've never had this problem before, so it is something other than the inclline. It appears that a number of 05's are having this problem, so I will just get by the dealer and see what happens. Again, thanks for all the replys. As long as it will go forward, I will not get too excited.

The reverse on My '02 basically does the same thing. It goes a little faster the first several seconds then slows to a creep. I bet I have a senso problem.
Another gripe about reverse is that there is no pushing forward when in reverse - even with the clutch in. Maybe a safety feature ... but when parking in a tight spot it is a pain to go up and down to the F-R dial every time forward/back for a tight spot park job.
