I finally found out where the buzzing noise was coming from on my 99 LT. It is from the chrome exhaust 'can' that slides over the exhaust muffler. After removing the chrome trim, I took out the two torx screws holding the chrome 'can' on, and pried it about 2" away from the exhaust muffler. I started the motor and, lo and behold, the buzzing stopped. I reattached everything last night and it still didn't buzz. On the ride in this AM, it was fine, but then it started again.

Prior to finding the noise, I removed the exhaust and checked for anything rattling inside. I tapped every area with a hammer to see if there was a rattle or a buzz. I reassembled everything and torqued new exhaust manifold nuts in place.

Has anyone here had a similar issue and what was done to fix it? I don't even know iif I can take that can off. It seems to be very tight on the end. I almost want to ram something in between the can and the muffler, but the heat would burn anything I was thinking of.

Thanks!

Nobody has had a similar experience??

How do you take off the chrome can around the muffler?? A hacksaw?

I have no experience with the buzz you mention. The chrome trim is easily removeable. Its primarily held on by two bolts on the top of the muffler. Possibly yours has gotten bent, and is touching the muffler body.

I looked at the clearances while I had the exhaust off the bike. There is at least 1/8" to 1/4" all the way around the cover. I took off the two screws and it will not come off. I don't want to bend it up, but it's not coming off easily. I am wondering if I should put a screw in at the rear, right through the cover and into the muffler (around 10 o'clock - hidden by the chrome trim heat shield)? What do you think?

Thanks!
