If so, what were the symptoms? Oil or water leakage?
Big job to put right? Special tools?

I did not have a head gasket problem, but have had the head off to replace pistons due to detonation damage.
Replacing a head gasket on the LT is really pretty easy. Actually, replacing the pistons was not such a big task, as the crankcase and head are right out in the open, and even the crank can be pulled easily with the block still in the bike. Picture of my disassembled engine attached.
The only special tools you will need are the little tensioner hold back tool (which can be the back end of a 1/8" drill) I made mine from 1/8" stainless steel rod I had around. Picture attached.
You will need the correct size Torx driver bit for the head bolts. I forgot what size it is. The only worry would be what actually leaked and why? If something actually has a crack, or overheating caused a head warpage, that certainly would be more work/expense.

That is one scary looking picture. I hope I never see anything like that again!
