This LT drop is the official initiation to the club!!

Might be a more manageable number if you count those who haven't. The only problem there is figuring out what percentage of that group are not telling the truth.

Another thought, of the ones telling the truth you need to look at how long they have owned the bike and if you exclude newbies(however you want to define newbie) assume they just haven't had the bike long enough, then you can conclude the rest are fibbing.

You know Doc, that's the trouble with polls. They are very limited in terms of the contextual details. I did think about some of the things you mention, but I'm still learning my way around the new website and thought keeping it simple would give us something useful and quick.

I've come close a couple of times, but not dropped it yet. My buddy Steve dropped his 04, 3 times and his 05 once, so he's doing all the dropping for the both of us.

Good point. Perhaps add another selection: How many times have you come close to dropping it and wrenched your back stopping it?

Does throwing it down count ?

I've dropped mine three times.

One of those times was after a 650 mile day. Pulled up into the parking lot of a motel, got off, threw it over onto the sidestand....wait I didn't put the sidestand down !! That had to be the most embarassing time.

Yup, dropped my '03 and joined that famous DA club. My first thought was the separation of years....since the '05 suspension has been redesigned are they less likely to be dropped?

I've had my 99LT since January. I dropped it twice in the first month of ownership. I'm very very careful now. My previous tourer was a 1986 Honda Goldwing Interstate. I had that bike 15 years, and I NEVER dropped it once.

Oct 9th, 2005, 7:46 am
I wish you would delete the "yet" from the survey. I have never dropped an LT and it will NOT ever happen.

Believe it or not, we have the same percentage of droppers as the Gold Wing bunch! There are people in both camps that have never dropped the big beasts!!!!

I would like to see a survey on who has actually CRASHED an LT....maybe we could learn from it.

Dropped mine first time within the first 3 hours of ownership (taking it off the centerstand). Next drop was more of a "knock over"...trying to back my truck out between the LT (behind me) and my wife's truck (in front of me). Truck bumped the LT, knocking it off the centerstand and laying it over. "Luckily" my VFR parked next to it broke the fall (doh!).

I wholeheartedly believe that anyone who brags about never dropping their LT is only setting themselves up for embarrassment later on.

It is the only Bike I have dropped in over 35 years of riding and I have dropped my LT at least three times. But not lately!

I was always very careful to leave it in 1st gear when on the kick stand and always watched were I parked it. I made sure there was enough room when making a U turn. Dropped her in my driveway taking her off the center stand the way BMW tells us in the owner's manual. I learned. Thank goodness no damage!

Day after I bought her. Parked with side stand on a slight decline to show off to the neighbor. I managed to go a year with my 83 R100RT with never dropping it once, but, bring home a new one and immediately break it in. I ordered the side strips and it covered the scratches on the side bad chrome strips just fine. I have 3 "tips" to date and have managed to pick it up without any witnesses on the later 2. Great design by BMW with side protection. :D

Once in my own garage, side stand not fully deployed.
Once at the health club, same error.
Once backing up with SO on the back! Ouch.

All 3 in the first 1,000 miles.

I purchased my first LT a 2001, May, 2003 and put around 25,000 miles on it and purchased a 2005 March of 2005 and now have 15,000 on it. I have never dropped either of the two LT's as yet. I feel quite lucky. I have come close twice. I am very careful where I park.

When to show it off at a friends house w/gravel/blacktop driveway, went to put it up on the center stand, no problem. Then walked away to pop a cold "adult beverage"

BAMMMM... CRUNCH, POp THUD...

The crushed mirror landed at my feet just as I turned around.....

I've ridden other bikes over the years, Honda's, Harley's etc and because of the way they brake, and the way their front shocks absorb energy, never dropped one while just coming to a slow stop or at rest. The K1200 requires your full attention at these tasks.

Note to self: Do not attempt to lift the bike on the centerstand in bare feet. Fall down, go boom into the drywall. That was a $600 lesson.

Had my '02 LT since April of last year, dropped (or more appropriately laid it over) 3 times all doing something I consider stupid. You just can't let your mind wander during parking and mounting/dismounting. Thankfully no damage from any drop (or layover whichever you prefer).

The results are Skewed .... Figure the poll gets you one vote.
But once you have dropped your LT, You should know better ... RIGHT ?
So one should get to post a poll result again & again & AGAIN !

So after 3 drops one would think there IS a problem with the bikes weight or the riders who ride them ? .... Go Figure.

All 3 of my drops have been off the pavement ... a dirtbike the LT is NOT.

Having owned an 05 LT for a year, I put 25K on it and never dropped it. I did come close one time and shear brute force on my part kept the bike up. It was loaded with camping-gear and I wasn't about to let it go. It isn't so much the embarrassment, as the physical part of picking up the big bike from a drop, not to mention the potential damage.
I did drop my RT in a parkinglot and vowed from then on to concentrate better during slow speed maneuvering, ignoring everyone and everything till the bike is parked. So far so good........

There are two kinds of riders; those who have and those who are going to drop their bike. The reason bikes drop is because most are 'two tired':D

My bike has been on it's side at least four times. The original owner had it fall over on him (unknown details) and he put it up for sale on consignment at a Honda dealer. The Honda sales guy rolled it out to the parking lot to show it to me. He left it on the side stand and it immediately rolled off said stand and onto the parking lot. My first time was during a long ride, I, being wary of putting it on the side stand, attempted to put it on the center stand but had a hard time feeling if it was on the stand or not and launched it into the fuel pump. The second time I tried unsuccessfully to bump start it when I had a weak battery (the cat turned the radio on in the middle of the night). I had one close call. Not realizing there was a slight grade at a gas station, it started to roll off the side stand. I caught it, but it hurt. I now just leave it in gear when I stop for gas, it's much safer that way.

I took an LT out for a test run after having tested the Honda Pan European and the VFR1300. Within 5 minutes the LT was the bike for me...30 minutes later pulled into the dealership with a smile all over myself and the salesman gleefully absorbing all the buying signals...pulled up in front of the dealers main door, kicked down the siderest and stepped off the bike in a confident sweep backwards of my right leg. Laid the bike down right in front of the salesman, service manager and other amused customers! At least I got to see the demonstration of how to pick it up before I bought it!

The demo also came in useful a month later...

I proudly put on all the gortex over a suit in front of a bemused gang of builders standing on the scaffolding of neighbouring construction site. Packed away the shoes and briefcase, got on the bike, made myself comfortable, turned on the music and rocked the bike off the center stand ... disc locks are so effective in those circumstances! Fortunately the ear plugs prevented me hearing all the comments as I righted the bike. The gore tex prevented me from looking like a sodden sweaty mess from the outside. I found the keys for the disc lock (of course they were in my inner trouser pocket!) and after stowing the lock, mounted and drove slowly out of the car park with all the dignity I could muster.

Since then they have stayed upright (touch wood)

Berny, I am sorry, but I couldn't help chuckling at your episodes!

I dropped mine parking it after coming back to work after lunch - trying to be cool and all. I had only had the bike a couple weeks at the most.

She just laid over almost in my lap - all in slow motion. I called a couple buddies in the office to come out and help me, but they wouldn't - thought it was a gag. Fortunately a fellow worker helped - a Harley rider no less...

I dropped mine twice in my garage, within 2 hours of ownership, while trying to move "just a little bit" so there would be more room to walk aroud. After the first drop I righted the beast all by myself by pure adrenaline. When it went down again I asked my wife for help...

Last Thursday I almost dropped it at a traffic light but my right leg was able to keep all that weight from the forces of gravity.

OH yea....dropped my 00 about 4 times over the first 3 years. One should'nt count cause I had too many brews before riding around parking in an uneven parking lot (those circumstances guarantee it will end up on its side). The other was just as brilliant....I left the sidestand down when I rolled it forward off the centerstand. Kinda looked like the guy on the tricycle in "Laugh in" as it bounced off the sidestand and fell to the right.
The new 05 however lessens the possibility of dropping it during low speed manuvers. Its a big difference and I hav'nt had it on its side yet. I suppose 5 years of experience with this particular top heavy bike helps too....but the 05 is definately better except for the "wobble issue".....

I have had my 05 for about a month and half, thankfully I have not dropped it yet. I ahve come close though. The most recent was when i was backing up and slipped on some acorn droppings. I do not think I am ready for the first scratch quite yet. I have about 1800miles onher now. She had 50 when i bought her.

Yup, finally happened to me too a week and a 1/2 ago right after reading some of the stories too. The newest OK Corral is the gas station with the cheapest prices. BEWARE the lady parked at the pump you're aiming at in a slow left turn now backing up into you to get to a different pump than the one she's at! I caught her out of the corner of my eye and tried to avoid the bumper now coming at me and turned too tight and slow. Pulled in the clutch and just couldn't hold her up anymore. Haven't mastered the horn button but she heard my foul language easily! Can't repeat here, kids might be listening. Surprised she didn't just finish me off! The method prescribed on the website works fine for picking up the bike even for a guy with a messed up left foot.
Make sure it's in gear!! I hope I'll never do it again but I ain't a virgin no more.

Heading south from the pacific northwest stopped at a motel east of Reno Nevada, tired after 900 miles and set it on the center stand without noticing was sort of downhill slightly and as was starting to get my gear off to go in and crash, the girl just rolled off the center stand and fell over. No i did not try to stop her from going over, let her fall then made sure was in gear and backed up to her and grabbed hold and walked backward to set her up again, turned her around and started over. Only thing that happened was scratched the plastic covers over the crash bars. Pretty amazing really, and you bet after that i kind of pay attention to slopes now.

Just dropped mine for the first time with 43K on the clock. I was making a slow u turn in a hotel parking lot and looking back to see if there was a place by the front door. I had almost come to a standstill. As the bike leaned to the left I opened the throttle to help right it but my left hand had a death grip on the clutch. So down we went, big gulp and all. I quickly looked around, but thank God no one was in the parking lot. I picked it up with no problem, with the right hand on the grip and butt in the seat maneuver.

And I was so proud of holding out for so long...boo hoo.

I bought my 02 used from a bike dealer in the middle of winter. They delivered it to my house, in the driveway, which had a very light dusting of snow on it. I verrrrrry carefully rolled it into the garage, went to move it back "just a little bit" and my foot slipped out from under me.

Does a "half drop" count? The bike went over and nicely pinned me between the garage wall and itself. Looking back, it was hilarious. I couldn't get any leverage to right it, and couldn't get off it, either! My lovely wife was inside, and after several attempts at calling her, I did a quick scan of the controls and found the horn button. She did help me out of my predicament, after a few minutes of laughter, during which she returned to the house, and retrieved the camera.

That photo will never be shown....

Old story, but I will tell it again for the new folks.

I test rode an LT, and had my wife on the back since she was going to be a big part of the decision. Pulled up to a stop sign to turn right, pavement sloped to the right, and used the front brake with the front wheel turned. Dropped my wife and the bike!

Same day, different dealer, took another LT out to the mountains. Pulled into a turnout to turn around and go back, backed the bike up while turning, yes, threw her and the bike on the ground yet again!

Two times in one day, and she still let me get one!

Of course there were 3-4 more drops over the next couple years, but those were all just me. Never dropped one again with her aboard!

The most embarassing drop was in the middle of I-15 here in San Diego. Traffic came to a screeching halt, and I was not paying close enough attention. I ALMOST stopped, but just tapped the bumper of the car in front of me, but that turned the wheel a little, and slowly it went down. Traffic all around, and I just could not get her up. Fortunately, the driver behind me turned on his flashers and got out and gave me a hand. It was a light tap on the ladies bumper, just wiped off the dirt on it, so we went on our merry way. Well, maybe I was not so merry. :D

I tend to ride this bike like any other which has owned me.
So it is going to fall from time to time, K1200LT is the world's heaviest dirt bike.
I did the drop 3 times in under an hour (Whats the record?) Going up a fire trail covered with 4-6" round rocks tossed me good. I did reach the top and make it down without breaking anything.

I've almost dropped it twice, once while stopping and the front wheel was turned and once in my buddies garage, I was rolling it forward with the sidestand down and it touched the floor (the side stand) and when I went to put it back down it started to tip sideways. My buddy helped keep it upright while I put the sidestand down, of course he was laughing the whole time. I was standing there in his garage surrounded by his pesky lighter oil and air heads.
I've been proud of myself, as I used to tour on a '98 k1200rs loaded to the gills and I dropped that thing all the time, most embarrasing was out in the street in front of a bmw dealership, some of the employees came out and helped me right it.

I dropped my 1200lt , or should I say it went over in the garage, then I tipped it over coming up a steep grade (driveway), then got in soft ground just off a drive way, need help to get it up each time. . .that bike is heavy. . . and I 've been riding since the early 70's. . . I have not dropped it in months, I watch it all the time and take it easy, getting off , or putting it up on the center stand,
which is the way i prefer to park it , due to the deisn of the motor, i don't care for the smoke , when left on the kick stand. . .and I'm 6'2" 210 lbs. . .

Dropped mine within a couple of days of picking it up from the dealer. Luckily it was in my driveway, and I don't think anyone saw me. Then, a couple of weeks later I did it right out in front of God and everyone. In a car dealership - major highway - lots of people standing around. Kind of embarrassing, but asi es la vida!

Day One. Twice, deliberately in the dealers show room, Left side on carpet; very gentle. Just had to practice the lifting technique prior to venturing out for the first time. Dealers expression captured on video priceless.
Day Two. Once, in the dealers car park, sitting on bike I bent down to stow the passenger floor board using my left hand and lost her. Once more on left hand side.
Long pause, Thousands of Kms.
Pulling into a gas station. Two up. Stopped with the front brake, wheel not straight. You all know what happens next. Left hand side again. Was good experience for us both as we co-ordinated our "exit" No problems at all, just let her go. We both laughed.
More long pause, More thousands of Kms
Doing U turn on very narrow country lane. Got to half way around (Not to be confused with "The Long Way Round") front wheel on grass verge, back wheel still on tar. Opps, "going over" through head set and again graceful exit, two up. Right hand side, finally! Slight damage to right case chrome trim this time, landed on the ragged edge of the tar road. More importantly, proved that the arm rests do fold out of the way and do not hang you up getting off. That's good! We both laughed.
Tips:
Try to allow an obstacle free "drop zone" ie away from petrol pumps, walls, anything that will cause damage in a fall.
With all the info here about parking in gear on slopes, stopping with the front wheel not straight, etc, say no more.
Know your limits, and when she reaches "your" drop angle, just let her go, instead master the "graceful exit"
With the correct technique, this is not a difficult bike to lift. And I'm not that strong.
Don't sweat the drop. It happens so deal with it. At rest, very little damage, if any occurs. So what if you embarrass yourself, just laugh it off, and enjoy the ride. If the price to ride the LT was a drop EVERY DAY, I would still love every mile! Cheers.

Not yet, but as a friend was righting it from the sidestand (on the bike but with a cup of coffee in hand) he gave it a little too much "Oomph" and went past upright onto the right side. XL J-Peg punched a neat little hole in the lower fairing :-) Check out the photo...

5AM. Dark. Backing down my driveway (50'). Didn't see the door, which had been set by the curb for trash collection, which had since been blown into the driveway, now laying flat with one edge perfectly lined up with the path of my rear wheel.

Right side of rear wheel meets left edge of door as I'm slowly coasting backwards down a slight grade toward the street. Before I realize anything is awry, the LT is listing to port and going down. I was able to get her wheels stopped, but not the lean. Went down on the engine guards and side cases.

It's still 5AM and dark. Wife, in bed, pregnant, not available to help. Neighbors in bed, not available to help. Tried the "technique" myself with no luck. Scratched my head for a while.

Pulled car into yard beside driveway, about 15' to the right of the LT (plenty of room for a right-side drop without hitting the car ;) ). Put all the windows down and wrapped a nylon tow strap through the B-pillar on the right side of the car and over the roof toward the LT.

Put another nylon strap through the left side grab handle on the LT, padded the contact points on the bike. Hooked up a come-along between both straps and started cranking.

The LT came up slowly and gracefully to a point where I was able to right it and put the sidestand down. Stowed all the rigging, parked the car again and rode off.

When daylight finally came, I was able to see a bit of a scuff on the bottom of the forward left bumper, and the side case chrome trim was scuffed up pretty good. BUT: it was scuffed when I bought the LT (used), so I had the dealer throw in a new replacement...which is still sitting on my workbench in bubble wrap! :p

Too bad it was dark...woulda took some pics of my rigging to share :)

I dropped our '02 LT twice. Once in Big Bend NP while parked on too much of a slope. I was loading it and it just rolled over the side stand. The second time was north of Terlingua, Texas on the river road. I had to turn around very slowly on an extreme side slope and it went down. It was ugly.

I dropped mine three times in the first week or so. The first time was coming home from the dealers, the first time I ever rode it. Turning into the driveway, I just "touched" the front brake. Went over like Artie Johnson's tricycle. I was able to right it by myself that time.

Later the same day, or maybe the next, I dropped it taking it off the centerstand. I was doing it the way the "book" says. Bloop. Had to get some help from my landlord that time. The bike was pointing slightly downhill. (Note to self. Don't do that again.)

The last time was leaving the parking lot at church. I had the front wheel cut hard, and let the clutch out, and down it went. One of the fellows there helped me pick it up.

No damage except a scratch from any of them.

Since then........not yet. I'm trying not to get to comfortable with it.

Sunday after Labor day. Just pulled in from spending the weekend at the Milwaukee BMW Club Rally at the Dells. Bike fully loaded with SO onboard I pulled into my driveway and put down the side stand (or so I thought) and as I step off the bike topples right into my new car  despite my desperate efforts to keep it from falling over. No damage to the bike... huge dent in the car. Given the choice between damage to the car or damage to the bike... I can live with the dent in the car.

Yes, twice. But I done it the cheap way. The bike belonged to the dealer.

When I took the first one home. I decided to try out the Hydraulic Centre stand. As both of my feet left the ground, I panicked and let go of the button. Down it went. I'm glad my garage is carpeted.

I have a security lock in the middle of the entrance to my garage. As I was reversing in the wheel hit it and I overbalanced in the entrance of the garage. No visible damage.

I bought my '00 on a Saturday. Parked it in the garage. I was on night shift, so I ride it every day around the neighborhood to get used to the weight and feel of the bike at slow speeds. I even went on a shakedown cruise for 100 mi. Over all I was feeling very confident about my ability with the bike and it querks. On Friday, I decide to ride it to work and show it to my co-workers. I procede to back it out of the garage and take off down the road. everything is working great. I reach down and realize I don't have my cell phone so, i go back to the house. I park it next to my R-Class on the side stand. go get my phone. As I get back to the bike, my wife calls (good thing I came back for the phone).

After the call, I get back on the bike. My foot hits the right foot peg, and over she goes. Nothing I could do but get clear. She bangs right into my Benz. Huge scratches on the door and mirror. One small dent in the door. I manage to right her to the stand. Wiped the scratches off the Benz and had one very nervous ride to work.

The dent is small enough that I don'e have to fix it for the end of my lease. The scratches were to the clear coat made by the wind screen. It looked alot worse than it actually was. I was verry worried when I saw what I thought was a broken mirror on my LT, till I figured out that they were designed to pop off. Not one scratch to the bike.

This made for an exciting week. Bought an LT, laid it down.

P.S. The gang at work loved the bike.

I went out, started my K12LT, to warm it up. Walked away, about 5 feet away from the bike, I hear a loud crash. I turn around to see my scoot on it's left side, trying to make it down the driveway....when it rolled off the sidestand, it shifted the bike into 2nd, so each time the rear wheel touched the ground, it lurched forward. My neighbors were amused I am sure...watching me chase my BMW down my drive. Although, I really was NOT amused!!! I have dropped it while I was on it! :)

I dropped her again last week making a tight left hand run on an incline, two up. I should have known better. I hadn't dropped it in a while and got a little to cocky  ... This time I broke a mirror  I had it tethered to tight and the bike fell on it. Lesson learned -- have the tether at least 6 or 8 inches long so the mirror clears the bike after it pops off.

Yesterday, same place as 2 1/2 years earlier, off the sidestand.

Ok, yeah so I dropped my '91K100LT last Friday trying to load it up on a trailer. I won't trailer it again.

Anyways, it had been dropped before I had bought it and there was a slight gap between the lower and upper faring. Now the gap is larger. If someone was close enough I sure would love some help on seeing if there was a way close this gap.

Thanks,
-steve

Dropped mine at least 5 times, no damage other than the crash bar scratches. I'm in shape, tall and strong, but it happens............

I've dropped my '03 4 times. One time when I thought I could off road - this bike is no KX250, another when I tried to take it off the center stand without mounting the bike - bike was fully loaded as I was en route to Americade, once in the garage - to many beers in me, these three times there was NO damage - thanks to those bumpers. The one time with damage - thankfully not more - was taking a ramp off a highway - there was a large amount of trash in the center of the ramp and when I went around it there appeared a large - unavoidable at this point - pothole. The front wheel was recked and some other minor damage.
No harm done - live and learn...

2 times. Both after parking and not on the bike.
Kick stand not all the way forward and hit the start button by accident.
Now allways turn the kill switch off when parking!

Today was the day!!!!! Had my 08 LT a couple of months now...was feeling cocky I think.... "I have not dropped it, not sure what the big deal is".

Was doing a u-turn to back into my parking space, tapped the front brake with the wheel still turned, and she went down in a blink.

Luckily, from reading here I made no real effort to "catch" it, so I just stepped off - it was clear I was past the point of no return. She layed right down with hardly a sound. I was moving maybe 1 mph.

From watching the video on this site, turned off the motor, put my butt in the seat, and popped her straight back up. Leaned over the other side and put the side stand down.

Don't think anyone saw me, but it is probably on the security camera at work. Great.... Embarassing anyway....

I can see a small mark on the chrome and the wing, but not even noticable unless you were looking for it.

Safe riding everyone.

so far, no, but I did ding up the crome on the left saddle bag, My Wife ans brother had blocked the driveway, so I used our sidewalk to get arround, I wasn't paying enough attention as to how close I was to the stucco wall of my garage, and "BANG", I lost a quarter size piece of crome, $135 later, it's all fixed.

This poll scared me straight to an 2008 RT. Passenger comfort would have been great for my wife but...

Dry Rider wanted to know and I'm curious myself what the percentages are.

Ive dropped mine twice in the last 3 months, Im a newbe on the BMW,
once turning it around in my driveway & yesterday I put the center stand up & must not of let it get clear up I started to crawl off and heard it snap back but I was about half on half off & had to let it go, It broke the right hand drivers foot peg, but I can now see where it was broken before & welded so now I need a new foot rest any suggestions
