I'm having a problem with my J-peg installation. Everything seemed to go fine until I had to bolt on the J-peg with the spring and ball in place. I thought I was following the instructions, I received instructions when I bought them from a forum member and checked several of the J-peg threads before beginning the install. I had the spring and ball in place, tightened the bold, tightened the stop bolt, and when I went to move the J-peg it was very tight, I moved it, but it was not smooth and it didn't feel as though the ball was sliding between holes on the J-peg. I loosened to check, and the spring was mangled. Reviewed the Forum threads again, appeared I was doing it correctly, tried again with my second spring (for the other side), same result, leading me to the conclusion that I am not doing this correctly. I have the J-pegs on with out the springs and balls, but want to have them correctly installed. Do dealers carry the springs? Can anybody help identify what I'm doing wrong. Thank you.

You might have detent holes that are smaller than the ball. Also make sure you pack the spring hole with grease. The ball should be able to go inside the spring hole when moving from one detent to the other.
Repair kits are available.

I have the same exact problem..I too read the directions - followed them to the "t". The balls just got stuck in the spring hole. Great pegs, I love them - poor system with the ball and spring deal..

My problem is exactly the opposite. The j-peg on the left side is too loose. It actually slid out after going around a curve and when I went to stop my pants leg got hung on it and I almost dropped the bike. ( I haven't joined that club yet and don't want to) I have the XL's and can't figure out why the left one is as loose as it is.
I'm probably going to take it off, maybe stuff something in the spring hole to compress the spring a little more when the ball comes in contact with it. That's all I can figure to do. If anyone has other ideas I would appreciate hearing them.

I did the exact same thing on one side before I learned. If you place the ball in the detent hole, while installing, instead of on the spring, you will damage both the hole ( the one the spring is in) and warp the ball. It won't work after that. I damaged one so bad that it jammed the ball in the hole with the spring and it would not come out. I drilled a tiny hole on the opposite side and used a tiny pin punch to retrieve the ball. I then used the correct sized drill bit to clean the hole up and replaced the ball. I'm sure Raffy's repair kit will have replacement parts so you won't have to do this. Just remember to keep the new ball against the spring while installing, keeping the opposite flange hole( the detent hole) away from the ball while installing. I believe they tell you to rotate the j-peg slightly, so the detent hole won't line up accidentally and allow it to slip over while tightening and warping the ball and the detent hole.
I hope this helps,
