I have been working on this for quite some time and finally think I have a solution that pleases me. If you have a BMW top case rack, you may want to look at the photos attached. All it took was a short piece of 3/16th elastic shock cord, 2 black tie wraps, and a couple inches of duct tape.
I wraped the duct tape around one end of the cord after it had been run though the slot in the top rack, then cut it to about 1/4 inch fron the end of the tape. This seals the end of the shock cord so that it won't unravel. Next I tightened a large black tie wrap just above the taped end to hold the cord from coming up through the slot.
Next I stretched the cord and ran it down through the opposite slot...holding it stretched, I wraped it with duct tape again at a point that would keep it tight. Another tie wrap above the tap and cut the taped end about 1/4 inch from the end.
Of course you would want to turn the helmet over if you suspect rain...or maybe not :)
