How many list members in the MOA mileage contest?

If my math is correct, there were 12 K1200LTs in first place, (by state), and 6 in second place.

I was listed in my state of Georgia but something like 26th or so. Tom Gallo was first in Georgia on his K1200.

No, marriage didn't slow Heidi down at all, she took the top over-all spot, (again), with 52,596 miles. Bob was second in the men's with 50,014. The top male rider was Reno Del Ben, from New Jersey, with 51,222.

Thanks! I know Bob and Heidi Still well. Bet Bob is really upset now, missing top by just a little bit. That would have been a real accomplishment, Husband and Wife taking both top spots together. Looks like Heidi AGAIN took not only Women's honors, but the overall. Second time she has done that. Bob should have gone with Heidi on ALL her rides!

A little surprised that only 52K was needed for the top spot, as it normally is over 60K.

Hey Pete,
Who said anything about chopped liver? I just looked at how many k12lts were int he top two spots. I could have summarized the whole list, but this damn thing called work got in the way.

Besides, this contest really comes down to who has the most money and time. I'd love to try and beat Phil Mann's record, (113,000 + I think), but just could not afford the tires, oil, service, etc., not to mention the time it would take.

Good luck on that "casual ride" in '07.

I don't remember exactly where I ended up but I think it was top 5 in South Carolina. Bob Menton got his name mentioned in the article but no reference to his cowboy status :) Dean Smith also made the list and had more mileage than I did.

I ended up 4th in Arizona. I was really happy with that considering Bob and Heidi are 'Zonies. I could have beaten Heidi... if I had ridden every mile twice!

Why does this not make sense to you? The contest is country wide, so they do it over spring/summer/fall months to give ALL riders in the country a relatively even playing field. It would make no sense to make it a full year, as riders in the northern climates would not be able to compete with riders who can easily ride year-round. Even with the start and end dates being on the "shoulder" seasons, northern riders are still at a little disadvantage.

OK, assuming you change tires every 11,300 miles and each set costs $250.00, you change oil every 5,000 miles and each change costs $25.00, and you average 45 mpg and gas costs $2.55/gallon:

10 sets of tires @ $250.00 $2,500.00
22 oil changes @ $25.00 $ 550.00
2,511 gallons of gas @ $2.55/gallon $6,403.00

Total for bike expenses, without any services, (which would be a bad idea)

$9,453.00

Add in the services, motel rooms, meals on the road and miscellaneous expenses and it could easily hit $13,000.

I lost out to Heidi again. Key word is again. George has a big point re the costs. We stock up on tires at the beginning of spring, and use a club members tire changer in Phx. Do our own maintenance with the dealer only performing big stuff. I had 3 bikes last year and Heidi had 4, and they kept us very busy. Looking at the expenses George outlined, I think we spent more than than just on the Iron Butt. Just afraid to look. We have sold off some of our bikes, looking forward to the new Adventure.

We just ride to events and places we want to see. No mileage goal in mind at all. Besides, it is nice to get out of southern Arizona in the summer. Heidi still has to work, but I retired and spent a lot of the summer riding. No kids and most of the bills are paid off, so we just have fun.

I would encourage every MOA member to participate. Your only cost is the stamp. You are riding somewhere anyway.

First congrates on finishing 17th in the men's divison overall with 30,334 miles.

I was able to finish fourth in Alabama with 15,812... the top finisher also finished 6th over all in men division with 37,399, he really blew us away...

Looking over the list of states, lot of LTs finishers out there...

No mention of "cowboy bob" but Karol Patzer did write that in 2004 contest an error in posting had you riding 2928 miles instead of 8928... (page 68 BMW ON)

bob stillBob, I believe I will! I'll take the bike to the dealer Saturday and get the form signed; whatever miles get racked up commuting and doing fun rides won't win me anything except lots of smiles!

Old "MitchRider" managed to get the North Wet on the list at number 13 with 31,297 miles. She's a 2002 with 130K miles on her and still running strong (knock on wood). Going to be hard to give her up for a new GT...still pondering that one. She's splitting time now with an RT but I hope to still have her around for the 200K medallion in a year or two.
