Hi All,
I picked up a new 06 R1200RT on Saturday and am new to the board. I'm sure I'll come across plenty of questions as time goes by but here's one that's bugging me. I can't find anywhere in the user's manual that describes what the tick marks on the oil temperature gauge relate to in terms of real world temperature. As it stands the gauge won't do me much good since I don't know what is considered hot or cold? Thanks for any response.

If its like the R1200GS (Which I think it is), 4-5 bars are normal.
Mine doesn't fluctuate. Had my R1200GS in 15-85 F so far. Will see what summer brings.

4 bars is normal
5 bars is hot but OK
Anything above the 5th bar PULL OVER, and wait for the bike to cool off. It only happened with me twice in Atlanta, GA traffic. The reason I say that is because once at the 6th bar, it will hit the RED marker in less than 3 minutes, both times this happen with me this was the behavior.

Or do like I did, get rid of it and get a Water Cooled Bike.......like a K1200LT, or K1200GT.

Here is some info I got off the Sport Touring site. Will probably be approximate, and vary somewhat from bike-to-bike:

BAR C F
1 40.17 104.30
2 64.45 148.01
3 78.33 173.00
4 87.83 190.10
5 105.81 222.46
6 131.98 269.56
7 148.15 298.67
8 158.57 317.43
9 168.90 336.02
10 172.74 342.93

Well the R1200RT must have a different gauge. Mine is a continuous vertical bar that starts at the bottom (cold) and goes to the top (hot). Along the way there's 4 tick marks much like a typical fuel gauge (1/4, 1/2, 3/4).

I've had two different RT's in well over 100 degree heat commuting in city traffic. The oil temp never maxed out and I never had the R over heat. Now I've heard you can over heat these things if you fire them up cold and let them idol in your driveway until they melt.

Most RT's I have seen will run at about 3/4's on a hot day.
