View Full Version : Bent the right side crash bar

While installing my new Ohlin shocks I had to have the rear wheel off, etc, etc. To make a long story short, the bike tumbled onto the right side and now the crash bar is bent. The chrome cover will go on, however the black plastic piece will not attach fully.

Can the bar be taken to a machine shop to be bent back up? Recommendations please.

Thanks.

I would think so, but then again the crash bars are not overly expensive to replace either (at least by BMW standards). $44 at Chicago BMW (part no 46632347101). Or try Beemerboneyard.com and see if they have any.

For what it is worth, my wrench says these are supposed to bend, and in doing so they don't tweak or break the frame. When I told him that I did not like my JPegs and that I had removed the "arms" of these units, he suggested that I replace the JPeg mounts with the stock ones, so as not to potentially damage the frame in a tip-over.

I have the same problem, the new one is $75, someone knocked it over in a hotel parking garage. I tried straighting it in a vise, that didn't work. Any other suggestions?

I took a tip over after slaloming through deep gravel. The tupperware down there didn't quite fit as snug as it had, but wasn't dramatically out. At the next service the dealer tech was able to bend it back into place. I don't know how, but I don't think he removed it.

I've had to do this twice, (one on each side :( ). I just put a large, (12"), adjustable wrench on the bar as close to the attachment point as possible and gently, but firmly, pushed it back down.

I have had very good luck by clamping the crash bar in a sturdy vice, and tapping it straight with a mini-sledge. It's just a piece of malleable steel tubing, and it bends right back into shape.

I just checked the prices at Chicago BMW for the parts I need and it will be about $120 dollars less than my dealer even after I pay shipping. My dealer is charging more than retail on some parts, that is not fair. :)

it off, on a flat concrete floor, sledge hammer at the point where it is bent. It may also not want to fit length wise. turn it on end and give a wack. I have done this many times.
I would NOT do this while it is on the bike.

I had my bike dropped once in my garage, w/o all the plastic and only the crash bar was there.
When I try to put the plastics back, the crome cover wasn't attaching well.
I removed the crash bar, put in a flat surface, with a thin carpet underneat and hammer it with a rubber hammer.
It worked. I was able to put all plastic back.
Before you buy a new peace, try to hammer it with a rubber hammer.

Took the bar off today and put it into a vise. Pulled it back into shape and it seems to fit fine. Lesson learned.

My dealer is charging more than retail on some parts, that is not fair. And don't forget to tell your dealer why you went elsewhere for your parts orders. Charging over retail only makes sense if you cans sell enough parts to make a difference. Lose a few direct sales to other dealers, and the practice quickly becomes unsustainable.
