I have owed a 2000 LT since it was new and have logged about 70,000 miles on it. I love it but have been thinking about getting another bike. While in Phoenix a couple of weeks ago I rented an RT and a GS. My wife and I toured the Arizona highways for three days on the RT and I took the GS out solo for one day.
MY impression of the RT was that it was OK but it didn't light any fires. First gear is way to tall for two up riding. Sixth gear was joke, it must be intended for the autobon. Below 90 it did not make sense to use it. The engine was noisey, although smooth. There didn't seem to be much acceleration, although I must admit that when I looked at the speedometer, I was going much faster than I thought. I guess it is sneakey fast, with out much of a rush. I much prefer the LT.
The GS was another story altogether. I felt GS engine/transmission is what the RT should be. Quiet, smooth, great acceleration, much lower first gear, sixth gear useful at 70 on flat straight roads. I am sure the RT has a higher top speed, but who rides at 120+. There is no doubt in my mind why the GS gets so much praise in the MC press, but it is a mystery to me why the RT is so far behind.
