After reading about 12 threads about the slave cylinder issue and drilling a hole and so I'm thinking serious about doing it.
Of course I cannot do my self... No guts :).
So I was wondering if we could set a date for a tech section do do it with someone who done before (did I ear the name David?) and know what he will be doing.
The bike has 48K miles, so I belive I should replace it and drill the hole.
I could not find a 'service list' of all items I need to buy from the dealer and tools need. Any one has it?
How about dates?
Who would like to do it on his bike too?
and who could be the tech guy? (did I ear D.S. again :) :) )

I will try to make it this time, just depends on scheduling, always the hard part. My wife has a specific store she likes to shop in in the Ontario area, not difficult at all to get her up that way for a visit. :D She works some Saturdays though, so it would have to be a time that both her and myself are available.
I have all the tools, the only parts needed are the slave cylinder, it's gasket (it really serves no purpose though, especially since we are drilling a drain hole anyway) and the two metal sealing washers for the lines to the cylinder. Also would not hurt to get the felt ring that goes around the clutch actuation rod.

David,
I can also go to your place if you think it would be easier.
I would enjoy a ride down there. Saturdays will not work for me, but Sundays I have it free every other week. Just lets see if any other people wants to do/see it.
I will try to make a BMW code list with those itens you point and post here.

Hey David,
I think I would like to do that as well(43k on the clock).
Do you remember the approx. cost of the parts? I think I remember it only takes a couple of hours. Is that correct?

I would say that with no interruptions, and having everything (tools, parts) lined up, 2-3 hours is a good number.

Wish I was that good!
At work I just have a couple URL's, and am not afraid to use them. :D
http://www.ascycles.com/Illustrated_catalog/K1200LT/catalog_frameset.html
and
http://www.realoem.com/bmw/select.do?vin=&kind=M&series=K76&body=ohne&model=K1200LT&zone=USA&arch=0
Here, just select the manufacture date and go.
Max BMW also has online microfiche, but their's does not work if you do not have the VIN number.
At home I have the ETK installed on my computer. Keeping two BMW cars going, and in the past the LTs, makes this pretty good to have.

Hey Elton,
This is a good one for a tech session. If everyone who has expressed interest actually wants to do this some advance planning is in order. It doesn't take too long but the bike(s) are stripped down fairly far since removal of final drive and swing arm are required. An early start and hopefully a tech or two to assist David would be good so all the bikes can sleep in their own garage that night. If more bikes need to be done then we can do in one day perhaps Ken and I can do a second session on another date.

I'm already doing a slave cylinder tech session next month, up in Washington. Come on up. :)
I'll be back in SoCal in May, and glad to help at a local tech session then.

There you go Elton. Perhaps Dave has an opinion on how many we should try to do in one day.

If both Ken and I were there, with help doing much of the easier strip down and put back, we could probably do 4 in one tech session. Willing wrenchers could watch as Ken and I get the first two down to the slave cylinder removal, then they could copy the work on the other two, same going back together.

Sounds like a good plan.
Can you try to set a date?
As I told before, almost every other Sunday works for me. Saturdays will not.
Not sure when Ken will be back from WA, but my open Sundays so far ar Apr 16 and Apr 30.
If we need, I can free up Apr 9.
Any ideas?

Let's tentatively try for the 16th, and see how much interest there is.
As you know, my home is on the market, so that could come into play, but the way the real estate market is now it is not likely, unfortunately for me. :D

Just realized that April 16th is Easter. Not a good day for most people. Guess we will have to tentatively shoot for the 30th. With luck, I won't be able to make it because my home will be sold. :D :D Not much hope though. :(

Elton,
at this point any of those dates work for me. I intend to change my slave cylinder prior to the service day. I figure that way I'll be more useful helping out the others. It's one thing to watch it done and another to have actually experienced it.

I won't mind doing it on Easter day (Sunday 16th), but I understand it could be an issue for other, so let's use democracy :)
For the house to host, I wont' mind to host again at all, but I also understood some one else had offer his house to a service party last month and I don't want to monopolize (spell??) it. :) :)
As I told before, David's house would be better since he has all the tools need and I have almost none.
Any other takers? If not, my is open for sure. And I can bring more Guarana and Pizza :)

Please note the updates to the recommended parts list.
Mandatory Parts:
Output (Slave) Cylinder 21 52 2 333 433 $100.00
Gasket Ring (4 needed) 21 52 2 332 604 $1.00 each
Gasket 23 12 2 352 156 $5.00
Felt Ring 23 21 1 230 440 $2.70
Optional Parts:
Push Rod 21 52 7 659 112 $36.00
The optional part depends on the year of your bike. My '02 had the updated Push Rod with the groove for the Felt Ring, but older bikes may not. I'd recommend replacing the Felt Ring either way.

I dont suppose anyone has considered recording the session with a video camera and connecting the camera to a DVD recorder and churning out some copies of it.
I would gladly pay someone for a copy of it so those of us who dont live in the USA can also benefit from the course.
Why not sell it for a profit and use the extra to go towards the up keep of this web site

I never shut for living, so I'm not a professional like Paul S. videos... but I can do it yes.
I have a camera and I have the knologe to transfer from VHS to DVD at home, so I can try to film it.
The only think is that who is filming will be not able to work. If any one had a better skills than I to film, I will be glad to bring my camera and let him/her film it.

Sure. Lets do it.
I will need some extra light on the garage we will be working in (actually, did we decided on the garage? so far I'm trying on April 30, but no word on garage).
If we can have at least 2 house lamps with 300W each we will have some sort of good light.
Also if any one has a tripod for a video camera it will be a must.
As I told, once we have it on VHS I can put on a DVD ease.
Remmember, doing it, will take longer that that 2 hours David extimated.

My garage is full, with all my stuff, much of my daughter's stuff, and having started getting ready to move eventually. If we do it at my home, only one bike will fit inside, any others would be on the concrete drive in front of it.
It will be no problem for me to bring all the needed tools, I can even bring my daughter's small compressor to run my air powered vacuum bleeding system, which I will make better before then. I have had parts to upgrade it, just have not gotten around to doing it.

I glad you are going to shoot the session, but, here are a few video protocols:
#1 - Shoot it on DV or HDV or at least Digital 8. Frankly, VHS sucks. The DVD dubs will thank you.
#2 - Lighting. Softer is generally better. PU a couple of inexpensive 2 bulb Flos at Home Depot. They will light a larger area then incandesent, with SOFTER shadows. If you need to get light, for a CLOSE UP, into a very tight area, use a flash light. Really. A small on-camera light would work well too.
#3 - A tripod will probably get in the way. The camera needs to 'Float' to be able to keep the point of interest in the shot. There will be elbows, tools and arms to shoot around.
#4 - DO NOT ROLL ALL THE TIME. Cut the camera when the action stops. Real time is BORING and wastes stock. Shoot from 'Key Phase' to 'Key Phase.'
#5 - Get one person, two at most, to actually narrate as the task or action is happening., Keep the chatter down. Address participates' questions directly. Or, cut and reframe. Its okay to video the guy who is addressing a question, if there is no hardware to show.
#6 - When you are doing disasssembly - Have the narrator talk about what we're looking at, and from where its being shot. These shots will preceed each 'Key Phase'. These references should be used as 'Chapters' on the DVD.
#7 - If not covered in the beginning, inumerate tools needed, parts used, include fluids, grease. etc. Don't leave much for the imagination.
Good luck, we're depending on you! :D :D

J. I really apreciate the tips. Lets see if we can do it the way you wrote.
First, on the camera, I do have a VHS only... any one who is planing to be there have a digital one?
The lights probably will be an issue to think about.
Maybe we can made it, with 3 or 4 lamps...
More input is better.

OK David.
As I wrote before, I don't mind doing on my garage.
I can put at least 3 bikes confortable inside my garage.
We had 5 bikes last time and worked well.
I will assume that David will have all needed tools.
How about oil? Do we need to have any brakes oil to re-fill the reservoir after the service?
What time should I expected the first guest?
Is there any think we should have ready to start, like removing plastic or removing the rear well? or else?
Do you need a strong bench. I only have a pic-nic table available there.
Any one has a digital video camera?

A Few suggestions from me.
First, i wish i was going to be there to record it.
Second i would use my Digital 8 Sony Handy Cam as it connects via Firewire cable to my LG DVD Recorder/Player in my Lounge room.
Please dont cut any of it out.
Set the camera to LP and buy the biggest tape you can get and let it roll.
What some people may think of as boring, others of us might find it interesting.even at LP recording, you still get a quite useable footage.
The LG DVD Recorder i have would easily let you record 6 hours in normal qulaity to a dvd. you can get it to record in like a suedo vcd format to dvd and get twice as much play time i think.
Maybe you might happen to "know someone" you can borrow the gear from.
Just to let you know what i own, i use my LG Model RH7823W DVD Recorder and Sony Digital 8 TRV460E together regularly via firewire. im not after fancy titles, just the info.
The stock batters dont last long, so i would even suggest getting a long power extension cord and plugging in the standard power pack the unit comes with and run from mains.

This perspective is misguided. This should not be a home movie.
It takes a bit of focus and preparation to make it a viable demonstration. I certainly do not want to sit through six hours of material to get one or two hours of content - That's nuts!
David and Ken both have experience with this procedure. They can certainly break it down into sections or phases that make sense and flow together. Shoot each section then CUT the camera.
The small talk and cross talk is usually not relevant and often interferes with what the leader is trying to communicate.
Also, using LP mode kills the quality! You’re going to be looking at nuts, bolts, bright shiny things and dark oily ones, the lighting won’t be great – it needs all the image clarity and sharpness available.
Please understand Dezrae, this is not an attack. I produce, direct, shoot and edit films and videos for a living. I’m not suggesting anything more than a group of intelligent, motivated hobbyists should be able to accomplish.
The point is to tell a story: How to swap out a Slave Cylinder. Not: What I did in California with the guys! ;)
Good luck! :D

The 30mm socket mod is an alternative to buying BMW's 140 dollar special tool which is required for setting the torque on the swing arm pivot bolts. A window is cut into the side of a 30mm deep 12 point socket allowing a 12mm allen wrench to hold the inner allen bolt still while tightening the outer locking nut. See http://www.bmwlt.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3885&page=3&pp=10&highlight=30mm+socket

Elton,
Doug and I managed to change out my slave cylinder today. Sure glad I was at Dave's house when Ken changed his. It wasn't hard at all but I highly recommend anyone planning on replacing theirs now or in the future come by to see this done later this month. Knowing what to expect really helped when the wrenches came out. Just as with Ken's bike mine, had started to leak (53,000 miles). I also had another minor issue which would have caused future problems. The hydraulic lines have a piece of rubber hose over them to protect the line from rubbing. One of mine had slipped or was originally installed with the hose overlapping the hydraulic fitting which sealed the lower end of the 'protective' covering. Water was trapped in that section and rust was beginning to form on the fitting. Somthing to watch for while you're under there.
Many thanks to Doug for his help, we had a lot of fun with this project. Looking forward to helping out with the tech session.

That is a good news to know :)
I think we could start doing a head count to see how many people are interested in doing it on his own bike, how many are interested to help doing it and how many just are curious enough to stop by and see it beeing done on April 30, Sunday.
Also, if there is any one who could be able to film it for future reference to others.
Should we start a new thread, with this all or just continue on this one here?

I think we can just continue this thread for now. As for the video, creating a video equal or better than Pauls service videos is actually a lot of work. I've worked in the entertainment industry for over 30 years and have spent countless hours on live and pretaped productions. We can certainly tape what we're doing but a one day tech session where we hope to ride our bikes home isn't going to lend itself to a quality production. I would suggest a seperate taping day(s) where proper lighting, multipul camera takes and script rewrites can take place without holding up the repair work or boring the participants. I can provide the lighting gear and assist with the staging as well as point to a good camera crew if we can't find someone in our ranks. Now we just need to convince David or one of our other good mechanics that they look great on camera :>)
