Brittany Spaniel Rides across the tank or on the back seat around the local block or so radius around the house. She's quite a good passenger.

I'm a firm believer that dogs should only ride on larger vehicles for safety's sake, and only while wearing appropriate safety gear. Here's a shot of Sparky on one of my old rigs. We could stop traffic without even turning on the reds.

Now I have seen quite a few riding the back of H.D. - not animals however.

Hmm.
My 14 lb. poodle (actually it belongs to my wife... ) who rides on the tank behind the fairing in a modified soft carrier with 3 enclosed sides of screened ventilation, full shade over his head, 1" nylon tie down securing straps, visco foam bed with perforated micro fiber cover and breathable mesh, clear vinyl zip on convertible window vinyl covering to protect him from cold and wet weather, and optional down doggie vest, while listening to cool jazz over the speakers...
...would have to disagree! :D

Not yet, but considering it.
It would have to a small, hardy little guy.
I figure a modified tank bag (made more like a "crate") would work. My biggest concern is the heat. It gets mighty toasty where I live (I rode for 30 minutes with the BC stuck on 125) and it my be tough to provide cooling. In the cold an electric heating pad should work well.

Our toy poodle rides between my wife and I in a harness type pet carrier my wife wears. I guess we figure he isn't going to get hurt any worse than we are in a get off or accident.

I'll take a picture of my modded soft kennel for you - there's plenty of room on the tank for these little guys.

This is not a politically correct question. Oh, I am sorry, I thought your were referring to someone's wife riding along.

I have actually been looking for a side car for my two golden retrievers. It makes it a lot easier to answer the call of the open road when you can take the hounds with you! ~darren :bmw:

I've always been amazed at people who include their pets in things like motorcycling. Who's to say they even enjoy being brought along? Are we assuming that since we enjoy it so much that they must also? Pets will put up with things they don't enjoy just to please us. Just because they don't protest doesn't mean its their first choice, being brought along.
I took my German Shepherd police K-9 partner along on a motorboat ride with the family once. He barfed at the back of the boat while it was moving, then when I was maneuvering slowly to get to shore, he jumped out over the front of the boat and ran to shore and waited for us. He was persuaded to get back in for the return trip home, but, looking back, he did it only because I told him to, he didn't really want to.

You need a poodle, I had a Shepherd prior to this hound. Wish I could have BOTH. ;)
BTW, KoKo did a 1500 mile trip with me and the missus on the LT last spring, he seemed to have enjoyed himself - he has been with both of us pretty much 24/7 since he was a pup. He has been on a motorcycle, multiple trips in jets under the seat in front of mom, several times on a hot air balloon as well as a sail boat, powerboat and ferry.
Has not barfed yet. :v: :thumb:

I think a side car would be the answer for us that have the larger dogs. My dogs love riding in th car so i wouldthink they would probably like riding on the bike. I did see a goldwing once here in town that had a golden retreiver on board. He/she was sitting as pillion. Just cruisin around town. I probably would not bring any pet on the bike itself for fear of killing it during a get off.

I can fit a cat in each side box & two in the top case.
And if you strap a slice of toast ( buttered) on their backs the bike would become very light on the backend, and almost impossible to ride.

Anyone know of any decent Side Cars for 2 - 100lb golden retrievers for an 06' LT? That was be awesome. In the mean time I use it to pace the boys in the neighborhood since my knee is gone and I can't run them myself anymore. Just have to be careful not to rip up their pads from the pavement, but they love it! Need to find them some dog sneakers. Maybe I should design some dog sneakers and call them Barky?? :D ~dk

Last summer we met a couple in Ill. pulling a trailerwith their LT with their camping equipment and two yellow labs. It was homade on a frame from Harbor Freight but looked real nice. They stopped every two hours to walk the dogs, but the unit had vents and windows that the dogs could see out of. I think several of the people who make trailers to pull with motorcycles make ones that will haul a dog

When I first visited the guys at Unigo I saw this variant in their shop. They cut a hole in the lid and put a little windscreen on it so the owner's dog could ride along.

Many thanks for bringing this to my attention Howard - I'm sending a copy of my response to Unigo - although from what I understand they are barely in business since they hardly ever respond to E-mails or phone calls any more.
My personal take on dogs in trailers behind motorcycles is that it is extremely cruel, selfish and ignorant beyond comprehension.
I think the owners of Unigo should be required to ride back there for a few hours before they release that design. Shame on them.
The dog is completely "trapped" - and any whimpers objecting to it are probably going to go unnoticed by the driver.
They are subject to a continous stream of stinky petrochemical exhaust gases and carbon monoxide, harsh vibration and potential hits from debris - even with a wind screen. Throw in a hot day and there is great potential for additional injury from heat stress. Dogs don't take heat well - they can't perspire like we do. Then there's the hearing damage from even ambient wind noise, not to mention high decibel levels from the exhaust pipe(s) at ear level. Throw in the isolation (dogs are VERY social animals) and there is probably pyschological damage as well - they most likely feel like they are being caged and punished for some unknown reason.
I've caught a lot of grief for my views on this subject on a "motorcycle trailer towing" web site that is frequented mostly by Harley riders - (**** 'em) - riders who LOVE loud, straight pipes with no pollution controls. They tell me how "tough" dogs are and that they can "take it".
I would never put a kid back there.

Before you fire off a nasty-gram to Unigo, Ron, I'd ask them how that lid came to be. I saw the modified lid at their shop and asked them about it, but I don't know if they did it for a customer, if they were working on a customer's trailer that already had been modified, or some other variation thereof.
I went back and re-read my earlier post. I said "they cut a hole in it..."; I'm not sure who "they" are. Might have been Schoolhouse Motorcycles, might have been the original New Zealand manufacturer, might have been the owner. Sorry for the misdirection if that's what it is.

No nasty gram - just an "edu" gram. ;) Diplomacy always trumps demogoguery.
It really bothers me when people profit at the expense of other people's (or especially innocent animals) misery.
Yeah, I'm a turning into a soft old fart. :D

I was looking at an LT a guy had for sale a couple of years ago and he had a contraption that his small dog rode in. It was a cylinder made out of very high quality saddle leather solidly attached to the passenger seat, lined and padded like a dog bed. There were four leather straps with a chest harness to hold the pup in. The dog could sit and see out or curl up and lay down. It appeared very secure.
Anybody ever seen one?
The dog obviously loved to ride because when the owner got near the thing he became very excited and wanted in.
