Tech Sessions for CCR 2006
The tech sessions at Chateau Elan will be held on Wednesday the 30th from 9am to 5pm or when we get done. We will be demonstrating the basic 24K type of service on two K1200Lt’s.
We are willing to do other types of farkle install demos, depending on what is requested and who wants to step up to lead them. Examples could include a GPS or Radar Detector install, accessory shelf, ice link or maybe even a voice II or Com System install??
For 24K service demonstrations, we would like to have two crews of 3 people for each bike. At least one person on the crew must be able to bring the basic tools needed to do a 24K. An air compressor and lines will be provided by me along with oil storage containers, shop towels and misc supplies.
We will need two bikes to demo on. Volunteers can supervise the work on their own motorcycle, or sit back and let the team go “team” go at it. We will be changing the fluids, filters (gas & air), checking the valves and other important stuff (including possibly a coolant change, depending on time and/or needs of the volunteer bikes). We might even be showing how to remove a camshaft and show how to figure what buckets you need based on the measurements.
Mark Neblett and I will be leading the sessions and be the moderators for each bike. We will explain what is being done by the crews and answer questions. The room for the tech sessions is large enough to hold several LT’s.
If you have experience working on the LT and would like to be on one of the crews please PM me or send me an email to jcrehder@comcast.net. We should be able to have two Handy Lifts at the session.
If anyone would like to do a demo farkle install and is willing to teach others how to do the install please let me know the details. We will try to accommodate everyone but can’t make any promises.
P.S. We have received several requests for brake fluid change demonstrations. While we are willing to consider this, perhaps as a separate session, with all the other things going on in a 24K, time will likely be too tight for us to feel comfortable that it will be done right. Nonetheless, at a minimum we will do a hands-on talk/walk-though of the three different brake system fluid change processes. More definitive information to come.

Is the CCR Tech Group considering a how-to of the proper way of drilling the clutch slave drain hole?

It is the drilling of a drain hole between the slave cylinder and the clutch, so if (when?) the slave cylinder fails it doesn't leak into the clutch, thereby ruining it, also. It's a pre-emptive measure that minimizes a failed slave cylinder to just that -- and not the clutch.
My slave cylinder failed, taking the clutch with it. This drain hole would have prevented that. It's happened to many others, also.

Perfecto, Howard. Onliest thang I'd add would be a link to some pictures that showed up recently (butt I couldn't find the thread that contains 'em), so maybe someone can point Ari to 'em.

Thank you, gentlemen.
Again I learned more! I surely wish that this type of mod could be demostrated in practise as drilling a hole in the wrong place could be fatal...

Ramon,
We certainly would like to show as many "how to" demo's for the LT that one would be hard to get in during the alloted time we have. Just the basic 24k services we will be doing takes up most of a day when everyone is gathered around two or three bikes.
With that being said if someone in this big LT group wants to demo that particular "fix" on thier own bike they are more than welcome to attempt it. I will leave that idea open for now and see what developes.

Interesting. This is the first I've heard of drilling the drain hole--my buddy's bike just blew it's slave and did take the clutch and also the transmission seals. It was an almost brand new 05. It was funny because he had no clutch action and we never saw any fluid leaking out and wondered what was going on.

We would be glad to demonstrate how we install Mick-O-Pegs and may even connect with Mike (Ottomans) to show how we have been working together to provide easy mounting of both on the same bike.

Hi, Gang -- Time to resurrect this thread! :)
As John mentioned, we will be doing narrated demonstrations of bike disassembly, using the 24K maintenance as our general theme -- although I expect that like in past years, we will also be showing additional "stuff", such as guided tours of the bike's features, showing how (or if the demo bike owner desires, doing) a canisterectomy, etc.
First and foremost, we need two individuals who want to have their 24K service performed for free :)
A couple basics:
1. It's your bike, so you can "control" what's done to it -- either by actively participating/leading the team doing the work, or by standing by and eye-balling what the the team members are doing.
2. We'll provide the consumables (fluids, filters, gaskets, etc.). The only exception will be valve shim buckets -- while we will be checking valve clearances and providing you a take-home sheet with the clearances, because we won't have an infinite supply of valve bucket clearances on hand (and because I don't intend to break our streak of every tech session bike making it home under its own power :)), we can't promise to that we will have the supplies on hand to correct out-of-spec valves -- you'll have to attend to corrections once you get home (but at least you'll know that they need attention!).
3. If you have a farkle and/or modification you want done, and/or you want things like cleaning up of wiring (such as re-routing wires under the tank), a canisterectomy, etc., we can probably get that done as we have in the past -- a complete VOICE II installation may be a bit of a challenge, but it's not out of the question :) Obviously, prior planning is the key to such "extras"; I just need to know what you are contemplating sufficiently ahead of time to ensure proper execution.
So, first things first -- please let me know if you wish to volunteer your steed for the education and betterment of LTkind :)

Mark and John,
I am wondering if you have all the service bikes lined up yet or not. I've had my bike worked on at 2 previous rallies and would be happy to volunteer again. I would be able to bring tools and a manual and some knowledge, I've learned all I know from Mark! Let me know if you are interested so I won't do my major service before I leave to go to CCR. I believe that you are doing the service demos on Wednesday, if so I should be available. I'm doing registration this year but am supposed to be "off" on Wednesday. So working in the service demo would be a great "off" day activity. Let me know so I can plan accordingly. (I sent Mark an e-mail on this last week. Don't know if he received it or if he is out of town)

Mark/John,
No need to hurry with the details. I'll be arriving at CCR on Sunday and staying through Saturday so I'll be around. Let me know what tools I need to bring, I have torque wrenches that I can ship down with other stuff. If there is a choice I've switched over to synthetic oil in the engine and rear drive. If that is an issue I'll go out and buy some in Atlanta to use so that I don't go back and forth. Other than that I'm happy to help out.

Do you still need crew members? I'd be happy to turn a torx driver, haul that load, lift that bale, go for coffee . . . I've done only one session of general maintenance on my own bike, and helped out at one tech session, so I'm green. But I can bring basic tools, include oil filter wrench and tranny drain plug remover thingy. BTW, if you look for my name in the list of registrants you won't find it yet; I just closed a deal last night with someone who is selling one registration, and he will let CCR know about me as soon as he receives my check.

Back again!
Time to recruit volunteer "T-25 Torx Drivers" for the 24K service demonstrations :)
Looking for three folks each for the two demo bikes to assist the bike owners (this assumes both owners want to work on their own bikes, rather than watch the fun!).
Knowledge of/prior experience with tupperware removal required; patience and a sense of humor when getting smart-___ comments from the announcer and the rogues' gallery a must :):)
Tools not required (although I have only one electric T25 driver to lend out; let your aching wrist determine whether you want to bring your own ;)); don't worry about tools otherwise, I'll bring enough 3 lb sledge hammers :) (just kidding Bill and Jim -- the hammers aren't near that big :O) ).
Plan on the better part of the day Weds. (morning through mid afternoon), as we'll want to take our time to conduct "visual tours" of the stripped bikes and to make sure everyone gets to see what they want. If you would prefer a half-day only, I'm happy to coordinate tag-team relief midday.
Any Q's? Post 'em here!

Not sure where you all are on who's doing what, but I need to get some serious on-the-job training on removing/replacing the tupperware. If that's the kind of volunteer you are looking for on some of these things, then I'd like to volunteer to help with some of the menial tasks. If, in the interest of time, you would rather have experienced technical-types doing all the "body work" then I'll watch over someone's shoulder or from the safety of the Peanut Gallery!
I'd also like to second (or third) the recommendation for the slave cylinder hole-drill demo. Every LT at CCR could use that mod.

Now that I got my GPS problem solved (thanks to Roy) we have good chances to find our way to the party site.
My bike just had a 40.000 km (24 kmiles) service done on Monday and I assisted the wrench a full day stripping and dressing the bike. Otherwise it would have taken him two days...
Obviously I have had my share of riding too by that time, so if anyone is interested in seeing inside my bike (slightly modified...;) ) , we can strip it and try to do to at least the famous "drilling". Why not oil change etc too.

Not to worry, I have a torques (proper spelling) driver that measures in nM (nanometers, for the non-mechanical amoung you). It's not electric, but I'll bring that too. Count me in. Or one. Or if you count in binary, 01.

I would love for someone to help me perform a canisterectomy and perhaps install a new shifter linkage.Hi, Keith -- sorry I forgot to respond when you posted this. The tech session is a demonstration of the 24K services, which we are performing on two volunteer bikes. We are not planning to have an "open service bay-bring what ya wanna do" sort of event (although that is an interesting idea for future CCRs!).
I intend to cover the canisterectomy process during the session, either by demonstration if one of the volunteers wants it done, or by explanation.
If neither 24K service volunteer wants/needs their canister done during the tech session, we can either do it on your bike during the tech session if you're willing to strip off the right side tupperware and remove the trunk, or, if you're not comfortable doing it on your own, you and I can meet up to do parking-lot surgery some other time during the week.

So did anyone offer up to sacrifice their bike to be pierced in the private part around the slave cylinder. :bmw:I did not ask for this one this year, for a couple reasons.
First, we already have a full platter with the 24K services on two bikes.
Second, due to the limited visibility, I believe this would be much better presented with an article with numerous photos, rather than in a ballroom where few would be able to see the work.
Third, I personally haven't had cause to perform the mod myself, and I am unwilling to do or supervise something to someone's bike that I personally haven't done to my own, so that I can guarantee we can maintain our current unbroken streak of every LT ever worked on in a CCR tech session making it home under its own power. :)
Fourth, I came into this year's tech session a bit late, and simply didn't have the time to investigate/arrange for it. I will, however, look to including it in next year's sessions if I can come up with a suitable camera/projection system for all to see what's being done.
