Well, it's official- the wife has given me her blessings to take the long ride from Long Island NY to the STC in April. As soon as I got the word, I jumped onto Mapquest and got directions. However, this is mostly highway travel. Almost 530 miles on I-81. Not sounding like much fun!

Can anyone make some recommendations on a better, more enjoyable route?

I'm going to post this in the South East forum as well. Any recommendations will be appreciated!

Yes, get off the 81 at Staunton/Waynesboro and take the Blue Ridge Parkway all the way down. It'll be open by then. You won't regret it.

Rob: I-81 to I-66 (Front Royle, Va.) starts the Skyline Drive/Blue Ridge parkway run. Beware however, the posted speed limit is between 35-40 all the way down through NC so if you have a couple of extra days this is a nice ride.

Chuck, the speed limit on the Skyline is 35mph. The speed limit on the BRP is 45mph. Rob, the Skyline is unbearable - avoid it like the plague, the BRP is much more acceptable.

I agree- I have a hard time as it is keeping the LT under 80 on the highway. 35 would be a real killer. When I get the route figured out, I'll post it here for everyone's input.

Thanks Ralph: All I remember is that it was painfully slow. Beautiful country and sightseeing but painfully slow.
