1. Ken (coming to wrench)

Elton, I can bring basic metric tools and a torque wrench. We should try and get a drill but and special socket if someone wants to change the clutch slave cylinder, or maybe better yet leave that for David and the 18th.

Dan Glenn looking for a 6K service on a 2005 LT. I can leave San Diego by Noon. I don't have a service manual yet. What do I need besides an oil filter kit? Do I need to bring the oil or can I purchase up there? I will bow out if its raining.

Thanks,

I have the complete service manual (up to '04 with Integral ABS) all printed out in a binder. If there are any specific '05 changes we can look them up on CD, but I don't think that will be a problem for the kind of tasks we're looking at doing.

Here is the list of parts needed as per the normal BMW scheduled service list:

For 6K (and 18K):

Qty Unit Part # Name
1 each 11 00 2 300 053 Oil Change Kit
4 quarts 07 51 1 467 608.5 Engine Oil 20W50

For 12K, the above list plus:

Qty Unit Part # Name
1 quart 07 51 1 467 611.5 Hypoid Gear Oil 80/90
2 each 07 11 9 963 200 Gasket Ring A14X18 (for rear drive fill & drain)
1 each 07 11 9 963 300 Gasket Ring A18X22 (for tranny fill)
1 each 13 71 1 464 916 Air Filter
4 each 12 12 1 465 104 Spark Plug XR7LDC

I don't think we have any 24K bikes, but if we did then all the above plus:

Qty Unit Part # Name
1 each 16 14 2 325 859 Fuel Filter

And every 4 years:

Qty Unit Part # Name
1 gallon 82 14 1 467 704 antifreeze

Other optional parts are:

Qty Unit Part # Name
1 each 11 12 1 464 823 valve cover gasket
1 bottle Dot 4 Brake Fluid
1 tube Permatex Ultra Black silicone sealant

If the 6K guys want, you can add the rear drive gear oil and gasket as well. It's not required, but also isn't really a lot of extra work.

That should give everyone enough info to get what they need.

I noticed that this morning. San Diego is still calling for rain but it looks like there will be some fair weather up your way.
Just got back from the dealer and got the oil, filter kit, and filter wrench - $63. Looks like I'm set. I'll try to get out of San Diego by 7:30 at the latest. Look forward to meeting you all.

Ken (messe) will be here and he is good on that.

Depending on how many bikes we have, I will do the 48service on my bike too.

Two very important 'safety' notice for those who are comming:

1) Right before my house there are 2 speed bumps. Chances are you WILL botton down your bike on those if you don't slooooooow down. Be aware.

2) More importante (thank you Michael):
There are planny of drinks and water on the cooler, some snacks on the garage table and we can order pizza near by, BUT I do not dring coffee, so I have no coffe pot, coffee, and no knowlodge on how to brew coffee.
So if any one can bring a small machine, the kitchen is all open.
Any takers?
I can buy some Starbuks cool moccha fraputinos, but will be all if you don't bring your own :(... sorry guys :( :(

Looks like we're talking about the aftermath over on the March 18th thread. Just wanted to offer my thanks to those who made this a great day of learning. All I did was change my oil but I saw three bikes get torn down to the fuel tank, all major fluids replaced except coolant, air and fuel filter service, valve gap check, cam r & r, Ottomans installed, whew! Quite a day.

Mike - Thanks for loaning all those tools and the great advice - if there was any doubt about the capacity of an LT, its gone now. Good luck with the sprocket and camshaft, let us know how it turns out.

Ken - Great knowledge sharing and the gloves kept me warm all the way home! Thanks for traveling that distance to help us out.

Elton - Awesome host. Thanks for opening your garage and home, it was great meeting you.

Nice meeting all of the rest of you as well. Doug, Dave, Bill, Butch, Gary, miss anyone? Lots of good advice and discussion on many topics from some very experienced riders. I learned a lot from everyone. Thanks again.

I enjoyed stopping by for the short visit. It's fun to watch people take things apart who can actually put them back together! Next time I should have my seats back and should be able to arrive on a motorcycle.

Blessings,

I to would like to thank everyone. I learned and gained confidence and met some very nice people.
I also learned on my way to the tech day how well the ABS brakes work at 80mph when a Honda comes sliding across four lanes of traffic right in front of you!
I want to thank Ken and Michael for their patients and help. I also want to thank Elton for coming to my rescue when he didn't have to! Thanks Elton! I didn't torque one of the valve cover bolts and a few miles away on the freeway noticed how slippery my left foot was on the peg as I looked down the whole left side of the bike was covered in oil. I got off the freeway and found I had lost about 2qts of oil. I called Elton and he came right away with oil and helped me correct the problem, thats what I call a friend. I hope I can return the favor some day.

Guess I should've torn into my LT as well. I'm doing a full service and a few other things (Baehr, PIAAs, heated liner wiring, wiring cleanup, etc.). Just got to the valve check. I have 3 tight intake vales, though all exhaust look OK. One intake is very tight, so good thing I checked before leaving on my 6-week work trip. Maybe I shouldn't have waited a year and 30K miles to check them. Too much time working on other bikes, and not enough on my own, I guess. :)
