Hi all,

As time has passed we have learned new things about motorcycle shipping to US. Last time I wrote to this forum we were still choosing between various landing points and San Francisco was becoming our favorite.

Well, then we learned that the shipping company has stopped bike transports to the US altogether about two years ago. The reason was the all the time more strict security regulations, immense bureaucracy and all that sort of things. They only ship bikes to and from Canada.

OK, we changed our plans to the direction that some board members already advised us to do in the first place and not to ride through the extremely hot southern states. Arrival to Calgary and departure from Toronto. This is our current plan.

However, just to make sure things are not that simple, we also learned that we just simply don’t ride our bikes to the airport few hours prior to the scheduled departure time and hop on the same plane. We have to leave the bikes to the airport cargo center 48 hours before the departure time, battery disconnected and gas tank containing max 1 gallon of gas. Okay, to disconnect the battery and suck out extra gas from the tank is no big deal – but 48 hours before the departure! We also found out that this is a strict deadline (for security reasons) , if we miss that, the bike loading will be postponed to the next flight…

As we don’t have all the time in the world at our disposal we have to try to try to work out something. At this time our overall schedule ( for the bike flights) looks as follows: Arrival to Calgary Aug. 16th at 09:10, departure from Toronto Sept 5th at 18:30.

Due to the 48 hour rule we will be likely to arrive to Calgary about 1 – 1, 5 before the bikes as it makes no sense for us to sit and wait in Frankfurt in order to get to the same flight with the bikes. After handing over the bikes to cargo center we can jump on the next low fare airline and fly to Calgary and wait for our bikes there. All suggestions on how to kill 1- 2 days in Calgary are appreciated…;-)

On our way out from Toronto we have a bit better possibility to spend the mandatory 48 hours as I have some friends in Northwest Ohio area and we can visit them and then fly out from Toledo or Detroit ourselves, only the bikes leaving from Toronto.

As far as the route from Calgary to Braselton I have been doing some preliminary route planning first by reading route descriptions on this forum and I also have been assisted by Nathan Coe who sent me a set of detailed maps he had printed out from his map software.

I have been using Garmin Map Source City Navigator North America v.7 but to my surprise the maps are not very detailed at all. ( Maybe due to the fact that my BMW Navi II is the Euro version…) This also explains why on some routes I have no smaller roads visible at all…

I have attached our preliminary route plan (the Excel picture in a Word document) for the kind board members to comment. Nathan already helped me a lot with suggestions on the West Glacier and Yellowstone national parks.
He also guided us to the famous Dragon Tail route. However, there might still be a lot worth seeing between Sturgis SD and Braselton GA. As you can see our daily ride distances are not challenging at all. We have left some slack here and there as we don’t know if something worth seeing or experiencing would pop up.

The named places on the routes generally have no particular meaning to us, they just happen to be on a convenient distance from the previous map point. If you locals see that my route selection does not make sense, please feel free to suggest alternatives.
I will attach the map pictures to separate posts.

We are also open for any group ride suggestions in case you feel that you could bear two foreigners riding with you for a day or two.

Thanks in advance for your comments or questions.

In order to introduce you to some good old Western Canadian hospitality----- I have marked out the 16 thru 18th of August in my daytimer. If it suits you, I can pick you up at the airport and supply accommodations while you wait for your bike arrivals. (save your hard earned money for CCR). Hopefully I can arrange for a few of the other LT owners in the area to join us.

pozo_izquierdo OK, we changed our plans to the direction that some board members already advised us to do in the first place and not to ride through the extremely hot southern states
I was one of the board members that advised you about the heat in August,

but I think there may have been a little misinterpretation.
plotting a northern route is not going to get you out of the heat,
the northern plain states are known for their extreme weather hot in summer, cold in winter.
When I was in Michigan last July it was 96 degrees while it was only 88 back home in Florida.

I understand there's not enough time to do it all and you'll have to make some sacrifices but I am real sorry to see that your route bypasses most of Colorado and all of Utah, and in my opinion there's more to see in those two states than everything east of there.

Oh boy (Roy)!

We did not expect this much, but of course we are very happy and thankful for your offer!
Just a detail if it makes a difference: Our bikes would arrive in the morning of the 16th and Jouko and myself would arrive 1-2 days before that, depending what flights we can book. I will let you know as we know more...

Best regards

Hi Hans,

we did not change our original route plan in the fear of the heat. It was just the fact that we could not land on the US territory.
The few times I have visited Midwest US (Ohio area) in the past years it has been August and every time VERY hot and humid (at least for us Finns...) so we are prepared...

And perhaps, like Dick said, we have to save some places of interest for the next trip as I have promised my wife that I'll take her along the next time. I have explained to her that my solo trip is "just to check the places and look around a little"...;-)

Best regards

Just let me know as your plans get firmed up -- flight #s and arrival times and I will pick you up at the airport (and get you back there for your bike(s) of course). We should be able to think of some things to do to burn up a day or two.:D

Hey Roy,

I'll sure do that and boy am I ever grateful for the Finnish curling team as they let you guys win the gold medal in Turin. :D I bet I wouldn't have gotten the invitation had they beaten Canada in the final game as the hockey success for the North Americans was not much to tell kids about...:p

Ok ok, enough of this kidding now...we were just so excited about our silver medal in curling as the whole team comes from my home town Hyvinkää.
And the hockey final will be on Sunday, let's see if we can beat our beloved neighbors the Swedes...:)

Regards

I can't really comment on you ride from Calgary to CCR, but on the way back, I would think about heading more east, particularly through West Virginia. I grew up in western Ohio (Dayton) and made the Dayton-Flint, MI trek regularly during my college years, and western Ohio is boring, even on smaller roads. Plus, from Toledo into Windsor, Ontario, you are pretty much forced to interstates, heavily traveled interstates in poor repair, with lots of construction, and not much scenery.

Eastern Ohio and particularly West Virginia are a great place to ride. I don't think there is a single bad road to ride in West Virginia. That state has low population density, so there isn't much traffic, but the state does a fine job of keeping the roads in good repair. From there you could head north, either to Sandusky, Ohio, where you can take a ferry across Lake Erie, or head to Niagara Falls and cross into Canada there.

Another option, since you are crossing Deal's Gap is to take the Blue Ridge Parkway. It is about 650 miles and runs along the ridge of the Appalachian Mountains. There is no truck traffic allowed, and is also in excellent repair. That will leave you in the middle of West Virginia.

I know you are meeting people in Ohio, so maybe the option of eastern Ohio is out. If you must travel in the western edge, between Cincinnati and Dayton is some pretty good riding. If you take 71 N out of Cincinnati, to Exit 32, to SR 350 E to Serpent Mound. This is a Indian Burial Mound shaped like a big snake right on the edge of a big gorge cut by the Little Miami River. Once touring Ft. Ancient/Serpent Mount, head north on the little gray roads following the Little Miami River to Waynesville, OH. From there, either take 42 to Xenia, or cut back over to I-75 and into Dayton.

Ari,

I think that it's great y'all can make it over. IMO, if you had the time you might want to consider going a little further west from Calgary and squeezing in Lolo Pass (it runs from Lewiston, ID to Missoula and is worth the detour :D :D) and/or as someone else said, trying to see a little of Utah or Colorado. There are some really great rides in Colorado, but since you don't have forever - even I-70 from Grand Junction to Denver is a great ride. Yeah, it's an interstate but it's scenic and you can FLY!

HTH,
Richard

then you probably know exactly where I got my avatar picture.
Nothing would suprise me in the UP, I've seen it 85 one day and 55 and rainy the next

My wife and I are doing our retirement trip this year, round the US counterclockwise and ziggy-zaggy starting near the end of March.
I hope we're still traveling in August, but I am going to make it a point to somehow, somewhere reach out and shake your hand.
