View Full Version : Did I Mess Up by ordering Cee Bailey w/o wings

I just order Cee Bailey #2 -2 tinted gray. I ordered standard instead of the shield with the wings. I thought they were a little overkill, but then I started having doubts. If I screwed up I can probably call and upgrade. Any input would be appreciated.

Depending on the weather in SC... but I think you got the right one. I too have a #2 -2 and I live in SOCAL, and in retrospect I wish I had ordered the #2 -4 since I have the low seat.
The wings are really useful if you live in cold weather (or heavy rain), but they may be an overkill otherwise.
I am not sure CB will exchange the shield just because you don't like it... but it is worth a phone call.

05 Blue LTAs some have suggested to me, find somebody with a CB w/wings and check it out... assuming they'll let you ride their LT. Or, just move the shield to your own bike -- doesn't take 5 minutes. It's actually something I can do to a machine, using real tools. :D
My current thinking is, when it comes time to order the windshield, to get it with wings; I want maximum buffeting reduction for me and my wife. I might be surprised; maybe the CB without wings is plenty good enough.
Guess I haven't helped with your question...

I bought the Cee Bailey w/ wings and really am really pleased. I do go to my short Euro during the warmer months for riding short trips. I would still use the "wing" shield for long trips. Just my choice. Curt

Personally, I think you did just fine.
I'm running a CB standard size here in Belgium, where the weather is crap most of the time, and I ride all year.
The standard is low enough to see over easily when down, and high enough to cut turbulence to almost nil when up. And the SO loves it.
So: no wings for this kid. I think you're gonna like it fine.

I bought a #2 -4 Cee Baileys and really like it. I live in Maryland and ride all year. I don't have a need for any more wind protection that what the #2 model provides. I'm glad I got the -4 version so that it stays low and out of the way most of the time. Because of its flip you can run with the Cee Baileys set at a lower setting. Enjoy....

I have the number 2 with wings on my 05. It's absolutely fantastic. We have a lot of chilly weather here in Wisconsin, so it comes in handy.

" Did I Mess Up by ordering Cee Bailey w/o wings ? "
In the spirit of messy13 (trying to be deliberately obnoxious), I would suggest that you messed up by ordering a Cee Bailey shield, period. The way their plastic behaves in an accident (i.e., shattering) is such that I wouldn't sit behind it under ANY circumstances. This comes from someone who went flying over the handlebars and thru the shield after being cut off by a cage driver in June of 1993.

That's "Mr. Cowboy Obnoxious" to you, son. And I think it follows that since nothing you say makes sense, then nothing that happens to you makes sense either. That's known as "shooting the messenger13"! HA! :D :D :D

I have both Cee Bailey windshields. #2 -1, and #2 -1 w/wings. Light grey tint on both. The wings do control buffeting to the pillion a great deal but get ready for an increase in radiated engine heat up through the riders torso. The wings are great for winter riding without question but too warm for the summer. They also have tendency to vibrate in the full down position as they overlap the fairing plexi wind deflectors. These CB shields are only a couple hundred bucks each and take five minutes to switch out. If you want to expand your riding season, why not have both? How many other farkles are this "cheap" and bring so much, ah, "appreciation" from your SO? Continuous buffeting takes a lot out of your pillion; positive energy that might be better expended in more imaginative ways.
By the way, we switched toprack cases last year from a freeform DeSantis to a formed, trailing-edge curved Mag's Bag. My wife swears when the Mag's Bag is on the rack, wind buffeting is also greatly reduced. I suspect the slipstream around the fairing starts to break up and ripple somewhere close to the pillion's seat position, perhaps even just behind the seated pillion. The curved bag seems to extend a smooth, continuous arched surface at the top of the slipstream that promotes a more stable flow further aft of the bike. Running with the curved bag and the wings provides almost a dead air space between the windshield and tailpipe.
FYI: I think you are safe, Joe. Wouldn't you need a GS to get up to Brokeback Mountain? :p

I have a #2 -2 and think it is great. I actually like it better for summer riding then the stock. When winter rolls around, I switch back to stock and use it. I see a little more wind protection on the sides. In the summer, I get more actual airflow on the sides for hot days, but better protection for the helmet. I almost always ride alone and when my kids ride, they don't really say much anyway. The wife, well the jury is still out and we will see when we are empty nesters.

I best not make comments about any pillion size then.

What did you expect your windshield to do when your entire body went over the handlebars?? Cushion you like a mattress?? I don't get it. We should drive w/o windshields? I think your reply was a pretty irresponsible and uneducated thing to say. You're still alive aren't you? If it'd been a car, it would have been a very, very different story I reckon. The material that CB's uses has to go thru a far, far more rigorous test than most comparable products out there.........it has to.......it's used in Aircraft windshields and has to meet DOT 8 M59 standards.....and you don't see that stamp on other makers windshields.
As far as the original question goes....between you and me...yes I think you made a mistake by not getting the wings....but until you try one out you won't know how much of a difference it (the wings) makes. If you get up in my area.....be glad to let you take my bike out and see for yourself.

Anyway, I sent your remarks to the guys at CB's and this is their reply.....
Regarding his below message on the board, as with a lot of these “internet experts”, his text is merely his uneducated opinion, and has no facts in the body whatsoever. Our plastic will break with an impact, just as most plastics will. I don’t understand what “shattering” is, but it is not breaking in a million pieces. Usually, in a break, the windshield will break away cleanly in an area that was subjected to the greatest impact force.
It also must be understood, that we do not have anything to do with the SAE and DOT approvals. When we state that our windshields are DOT approved, and comply with AS6 or AS7 approval specs, we are certifying that those shields meet/or exceed the requirements specified by the DOT for those specifications. By the way, these are the same exact specs that are on the OEM BMW shields (look at the ID stamp on the shields). This spec is apparently good enough for the DOT and BMW OE shields, but not good enough for the author. I don’t know what specification his current shield is, but if it does have a spec on it, I’m 100% sure it has one of the two mentioned above on it, unless it was manufactured in Europe.
Also, maybe he wasn’t wearing his helmet when he went through the shield in 1993, and lost some of his memory when he hit his head, but we did not start manufacturing m/c windshields until 2001, so the shield he went through could not possibly have been ours, unless he mounted a Cessna or Piper windshield on his bike.
Thanks for keeping a look out for us, we also appreciate the input.

I just installed a #2 with wings over the weekend. I almost ordered a -1 or -2, after reading others' thoughts, but went stock. I can see over it when fully lowered, and at that height it offers BETTER protection then OEM fully raised! Awesome screen, I am 6'3" by the way, so choose your height accordingly. I really don't know if it's the screen or the wings, but it's MUCH quieter, and a lot less buffeting.

exactly what I have on my 2004LT
I'm 6'1, 34 inch inseam, 195 pounds, and it's PERFECT for me...and by the way, on a trip to Corpus Christi (which is a DUMP by the way) I had the cruise set at a GPS-indicated 86 mph and hit a bird (see attached, look in the top left corner), obliterated the bird, not a mark on the windshield after I wiped off the remaining bird guts...not sure the OEM shield would have done as well.
Good pick
