G'day all

Was having a look at my baby yesterday and specifically the side stand. Having read all the horror stories about the stand giving way and the bike laying down for a rest, I got to looking at the side stand set up. There is a cast edge that prevents the stand from going forward any further. If this cast edge is ground off a bit with a grinder or sanding disc, this would allow the stand to go further forward. Has anyone here done a mod like this and of they did, was it successful?

TIA

I've never heard of a side stand "giving way". It'll sink into soft ground or soft tarmac, which is why some of us carry side stand plates (or use crushed beer/coke cans) to spread the load over a bigger area. It'll also fold up if the bike is parked in neutral facing a downhill gradient. Which is why we all learn fairly quickly not to park in that way. Always park with the bike in first gear.

Various people have customised their side stands and you'll find their ideas with a search here or on the old site. People coming from a HD seem to miss the lockable side stand.

Yes sir. That was one of the first things that I did on my '03 after purchased. It has helped in keeping the bike upright.
