Noticed a few drops on the garage floor so I get under the beast and there is oil caked around the mating of the oil pan area and forward to the engine case. just where the skid plate mounts to the engine case. Any ideas what could be causing this?
What luck though...my in service date is 2/23/03 and I have 36, 500 on the clock. Just had the 36k done so I wonder if something didn't get tightened up just right.
Have to get it in quick as warranty timeis almost up and I want it ready for the haul to Daytona.

Chances are that one of those 4 screews (3 for the filter, 1 for the drain) are not well tith or your bike could be overfilled.
I would clean it (Simple Green, only on the metal parts) and tithe the screews again (30Nt on the drain, 11 on the filter cover if I'n not mistaken.) and see.

No misread. I will be leaving around March 6th. I ride all winter so it is only tough till you get south of Indy and then it usually starts to warm up.
Looks like no oil is coming from the filter or drain plu area. Just put it on the trailer and when my son gets home from school he gets the good news that he gets to drive it down to Chicago BMW and drop it off....I just love having somebody I can boss around and make do all those nasty chores I dislike...

I had an experience their years ago and it left a bad taste. Their techs are good but they have this attitude that if you have to ask how much repairs are going to be then you can't really afford a BMW. I also found Chicago BMW to deal better on the purchase side. I usually get a loaner bike but as I am going to be out of town next week and it may take a few days to find and fix the problem I just dropped it off. No slam on CycleWerks in Barrington I just have developed a relationship with Chicago BMW over the years.

The reason I asked, I tried to get a tire changed there and I was also going out of town. Set everything up they gave me a price of $30 to change the tire. They said they would order the tire I said I already had one they said in that case it would be $60 to change it. I said goodby.

Barrington wanted to charge you double without their tire?

That leak sounds very similar to mine - a drop a day or so. It was the main rear seal, wasn't cheap. Its a not uncommon problem from what I can see. I got mine done immediately. I know that Joel had the same issue and he didn't bother for quite some time as the leak is so slow. The problem there is that the oil can get on the clutch somehow. I paid for mine.
.....and of course, we want you in good shape for the "haul".....see you in Knoxville, then to Daytona, old son.

Actully your rear main seal may be good it's the O-ring on the crank.

That is the location exactly....I would think my warranty would cover that. My 3 year in service date is next week. Must be some major screw up in the Karma dept. Oil leak shouldn't have started for a good 2 weeks past my warranty expiration....hahah.
Yes Ralph, can't wait for Daytona!!

I'm not quite sure of where you may be seeing the drops of oil under the engine. However, I found a similar-sounding leak -- a drop or two a day. It was coming from the front of the engine where the pan meets the block. Seems some accountant at BMW had decided to leave the middle bolt out -- there are holes for three bolts at the front of the pan to hold it to the block. I used a tap to clean out the center hole, put in the appropriate bolt in the center hole and that stopped the leak.

I noticed a leak on my 01, it was showing up on the bottom where the oil filter cover is located. It had been 7-8K miles since I had changed the oil (I use Amsoil). I first tried cleaning the area and watching but it didn't go away, then I decided to change oil and filter. No more leaks. I figure the O-ring between the plate and the engine had started to get brittle and leak with the heat.

Main seal....bieng replaced at dealer....10 days before the warranty ran out....fates must have slipped up. Supposed to happen 10 days after the warranty expires. Bikes was supposed to be done but then they said some mounting bolts stripped the threads in the swing arm and now they have ordered a whole new swing arm. Should have it by the end of the week.
NO harm I guess.

I hope you had the shop change the clutch and slave cylinder in addition to the rear main seal. And if possible drill a hole in the tranny for the clutch slave cylinder to drain. I will post a picture depicting the oil in the bell housing. No doubt the clutch fiber plate is contaminated. Along with hole for slave cyl.
