So I'm scheduled to go in tomorrow to take care of some things before I'm out of "factory warranty" and I have questions on some stuff

1) rear brakes screech - saw the post on the fact that there is a service bulletin on this - is it still good - do they have to do it?

2) speedo is off...way off when it says I'm doing 30 I'm really going 22. Saw that u guys have a do it yourself fix but is there anything the dealers will do about it?

3) Radio - can find any post on my exact symptoms. I'll hit seek to go to the next save station and the digital display says its change but no sound at all. I flip back to the last station - it works. If I try the other station again sometime it work sometimes it doesn't. Reception is poor unless you’re in town I saw the antenna cable fix u guy talked about but my radio acts like its being turned on and off when reception gets poor and it gets poor in areas where my truck comes in clear. Is the reception on these bikes just less than that of a passenger car?

4) Cruise Control - just turns off...I'll be cruising along and poof its off happened 2 times in a 60 mile ride.

5) Someone here at work mention some recall/service bulletin on fuel lines - does this apply to an 03

Thanks for any help/advise,

The rear brake screech will not go away. It is embarrassing cruising into town on the best cruising bike made screeching like a little red wagon, but i've come to understand it it just is that way.

Also... if your throttle is tight to twist there is warranty replacement. I did mine just under the warranty expire and it is the best improvement I have made.

Thanks, I saw that - my question is will the dealership do anything about it while it is under warranty?

Not if it is operating within it's design tolerances. If it is out of tolerance then they would probably just swap it out and you would still see a significant error.

Most folks are seeing as much as 6%-10% error at highway speeds with the stock speedometer. The error is always the indicated speed being higher than actual speed. That how the specifications for speedometer accuracy are written. The can't indicate lower than actual speed but they don't really give much of a rip about the other way around. Most US manufacturers spec there speedometer to +0 and -2% to -4%. Some European manufactures seem to be as high as -10%. Of course that error is not necessarily constant at all speeds.

If you want to believe the conspiracy advocates it is a plot to screw people out of their warranty miles.

I don't remember seeing any posts that someone said a dealer performed this kind of modification. I can't say I read all the posts either.

It all depends on your dealer. But generally we're seeing these responses.

1) rear brakes screech - There was a service bulletin on the '05 bikes, but for the older bikes there was a new rear disk (no real improvement) and new brake pads (some improvement). Best to just get EBK FA304HH pads and be done with it. I just bought a set for $22.99 at Chaparral Motorsports (http://www.chaparral-racing.com/Chaparral/productr.asp?pf%5Fid=361%2D1304&gift=False&HSLB=False&mscssid=041476C5C144C43BD97994EF0BFCDE31). At that price I usually pick up two sets so that I always have a spare set ready.

2) speedo is off - That's just how the factory designed it. The dealers can't and won't do anything about it. But fortunately we have a fix for that. It's a bit tedious, but otherwise not difficult.

3) Radio - General radio reception should be as good as a car radio, if you're antenna is not shorting out somewhere. However, several radios have failed or acted really flaky and have been replaced under warranty. This one is worth pushing the dealer on.

4) Cruise Control - Probably an adjustment issue, and the most likely culprit are the micro-switches, especially at the clutch lever and throttle rail. See if your dealer will troubleshoot this for you under warranty, otherwise just get the procedure from this site and have at it.

5) recall/service bulletin on fuel lines - That should apply to the '03 bikes as well. Your dealer can look up your VIN and see if it's been done already.

Also be aware there's another item where the dealer will inspect your ABS system. That shoudl also be taken care of during your next visit.

I had the rear brake screech/shudder on my 02 and had heard about the service bulletin. I pressed my dealer and they replaced the rear disc and pads under warranty and it did improve the noise, although not totally eliminate it. I haven't had any of the cruise control or radio issues you noted.

4) Cruise Control - just turns off...I'll be cruising along and poof its off happened 2 times in a 60 mile ride.

Sometimes when I using the cruise control and do any sudently moment like turn or lean, it goes off. I'm not talking about pussing gas or breaking, just leaning or sharp turn.

There's no reason for LT riders to be complaining about the squeaking rear brake when the cereal box cardboard cut-out in the shape of each pad (and placed behind the pad) works great as a shim and stops pretty much the whole problem within 15 minutes for free (it's very easy). Buying EBC brake pads are a waste of money unless you simply want to stop faster or need new brake pads, I don't recommend them for noise reduction. I'm sure you have some cereal box or like in the house to use as the shim, so get to it and enjoy quiet braking.

Factory rear brake pads part# 34217680375, retail $55.00.

EBC FA304HH rear brake pads retail $22.99.

I haven't noticed a difference in stopping power on the Integral ABS bikes ('02 onward), but there was a definite improvement in stopping power on the earlier bikes ('99-'01). And the squealing, while not eliminated, is significantly reduced on all years.

The cereal board cutout is a decent idea, but it doesn't last for the life of the pads, at least not if you use your rear brakes regularly and also ride in the rain on occasion.

I've read every speedo post since I joined the site 3 years ago. Have never seen where the dealer has done anything to make it more accurate. It's one of those things where if you want it fixed, you'll have to do it.

Good luck.

Then, the noise returned. I pulled 'em back outta' there the next day.

I used the new BMW pads with the attached shim. I have been an auto tech for over 30 years and saw all the manufacturers struggle through this problem.
I use my LT for transportation with the majority of the miles it traffic. I use the rear brake first and then bring in the front (old habits are hard to brake)
Any pads with an attached shim will solve this problem. Make sure that if you order the BMW pads you get the updated ones with the shims. ome dlrs may still have the old ones without the shims.

Dave,

Do you have the updated part number? Off the packaging, or maybe your receipt?

I had my '05 LT in last week for service (they installed Motolights for me). Brought to the service manager's attention the outrageously loud rear brake squeal. "They all do that, and there's nothing we can do about it" he said. I mentioned the cereal box shim fix. He said "it's not BMW spec, don't do it, etc.". I'm ready to do it, as one previous reply stated, because of the annoyance factor, because we shouldn't be creating this noise with the nicest touring bike on the road, etc.

Also may just go with the EBC solution.

Thanks for any help/advise,

1) Agree ... really too bad that the best bike on the road sreeches to a stop!
2) With my 'new' :D GPS and I've seen the difference is close to 10%, yours may be further off than 'normal' since your speedo = 30, actual 22 -> 36%, at that rate your speedo will indicate 80 but you'll only be going 58! But, bottom line, they (dealership) won't do anything to correct.
3) You have several good diagnoses to go with in previous replies.
4) I've had some 'issues' since the GPS was installed, was told that there is a plunger in the line and could 'stick' or move ... I'd have them check the system.
5) No experience ... see other posts.

6) Clutch ... guess the '05s have the chronic problem(s) (mine is in now, missing some good Feb riding weather! :( ). Guess you wouldn't want to mess with it unless you've noticed problems, BUT take a look at some of the posts on this issue.

Otherwise ...
Ride On!!!
