Subject says it all. I just wanted to do a sanity check here. Is an '02 K1200 LTC with less than 5000 miles on the clock, worth $11,500?

It's in perfect condition, in all other respects. Other than the typical standard stuff, I think the only add-ons are a security system, 6 cd changer and heated grips/seats. Other than that, no additional farkles that the PO added.

All regular servicing is up to date, but I can't say how long the bike has "sat" between servicing. If I were a betting man...I'd say it's had some rather significant stretches of downtime seeing as it's now 4 years old and, and has less that 5K on her. And since the PO didn't know, I doubt the rear drive bearing has ever been serviced/upgraded to the newer 17 bearing style.

Thanks, Toolman

Initial response is... maybe.

Nice to find a bike with such low miles, but BMWs actually do better being ridden than sitting. How long has it sat? Has the owner had ANNUAL services done, even though mileage was not being racked up? Also, have I read that the 12k service is a pretty expensive one on the LT? Is the bike due for any service NOW?

What about farkles (optional add-ons, whether they are BMW branded or not)? Is the bike well farkled to your needs, or will you need to start adding things to get it where you want it to be (costs can add up FAST). Are the add-ons installed professionally?

Is this bike at a dealer or at a private party? Either way there might be some downward flexibility in the price, and with a private party you also have the option to play the sales tax game, to reduce your costs a little further.

In the last 2 weeks I bought my first LT, also a 2002, and a Custom model like the one you are looking at. It had 26k on the clock, and I ended up paying a little more than your $11.5k price at a local dealer. But the bike was in beautiful condition, fully serviced and needed/needs nothing. When I started adding up all of the extras that the PO had the dealer install on the bike during his ownership, I came up with about $4k for the best internet purchase price (which, or course, would not include the cost of dealer installation).

All in all, I paid more for a same year bike, with more miles on it, and I feel that I got a great deal. So you are definitely in an appropriate ballpark price wise. Whether it is a good deal will ultimately be up to you and only you.

Good luck,
Tom

Personally...I find several of the other colors much more repulsive than the brown, but I'm just stating the fact here. The dealers couldn't give those Brown ones away.

Toolman, That's a good deal...take it!

Just happens to me today that I went to my dealer and ask him how much my 2002 LTE (with alllllll, I mean allll farkles plus much more I put on by my self) would worth if I decide to trade in.
He offer me $7.500 and he would be nice and let me take my $700 custom made seats.
OK my 2002 has almost 50.000 miles, but 7500 is low...
Any way, back to your possible bike, I would say you will be due to the 12K service even do the bike didn't have that mileage. There is a lot of things need to be done 24K or 2 years, so add that too and you will be facing $1000 to $1400 on service.
Other than that, check the water hoses. They will tell you how long the bike has been sitting on the garage if they look old and need to be replaced. It's amazing how some rubber parts were out if you don't use it.

Yeah, I know all about that one Tbob. You got a super price on that bike. In fact, I told Matt that I wanted the bike and to consider it sold. But by the time he read my email a couple of minutes after he got off he phone with you, where he already agreed to let you look at it first. In the end, you could get the money in his hands faster than I could. Congrats...and enjoy. Not sure why people bash any certain color. I mean, if you don't like a certain color, don't buy it. I happen to like the Impala Brown color. Take care, and happy riding.

Since it is a C model the cd changer and heated grips are standard. Price wise I would try to get the price a little lower but what you are really talking about is a very lightly used bike. The year really isn't important unless you want the extra power of the 05. It is most likely an excellent bike. Price wise remember it is about half the list price of a new one.

Like some of the others have said, because of the age, you are probably looking at a brake service, if it was not recently done and a 12,000 mile service, because of the age. Other than that, add up what you might want to add, i.e. communication set-up and GPS, etc and go from there. As you can see, I have a 2002, bought with 1,000 miles and could not be happier. You will love the bike and spend more time riding than washing!

Excuse me for the bluntness to others that posted. But STOP telling the guy to do all these things that are uneccessary if the bike is running, miles is miles, why a 12K because of age if the bike does not have 12K on it YET, COME ONE GUYS, what happened with JUST RIDE IT!!!!. Stop worrying about work that is NOT NEEDED. Buy the bike.

I bought my 02LTC Silver from Daytona with 5700 miles. Rode it home to Atlanta, changed the Oil and filter. Filter had been written on with permanent marker "617 mile service 10/02/2002 - Daytona" I don't know if the oil was changed in between, I don't know how long it sat.

Guess what, rode home beatifully through northern Florida, southern GA it had 6700 when I go home, has 9000 miles on it now, still rides awsome, 12K service will be done whenever I have 12K on it, oh I forgot it still rides like a champ!!!, 3 different techs have ridden my bike and told me its in great shape "DON'T WORRY ABOUT ANYTHING" ride it!!!!. Annual, I am going to do it when I HAVE IT for a year, it will be MY annual.

My two cents. Buy the Bike and enjoy it. Spend more time working on it than riding it, like some on this forum seem to like to do, its up to you.

Thanks everybody for the feedback. I feel it's a pretty good deal, as confirmed in several of your replies. So I went ahead and bought it. I'm not too worried about servicing, etc., since I always do my own wrnching...unless it's serious problem that only a dealer is equipped to handle.

One comment I'd like further clarification on is....and remember, I'm just a newbie here (first BMW). The comm system. dandiver mentioned that I can "add a "communication set-up....."

I thought all LTs came with the comm system as a standard option. I mean, I know I need to get the helmet and system in the helmet, but I assumed the bike was all set up already. No?

Brake fluid is designed to absorb moisture and if it has not been replaced in 4 years you are on borrowed time. It is expensive to replace if you don't.

Don't know if brake fluid is actually "designed" to absorb water....but rather this undesirable hygroscopic characteristics is simply a result of it's silicone based chemical profile.

I know what you mean on changing it out though. The BF change is one of the first things on my "to-do" list when I get 'er home.
Thanks

Most likely, you'll need to add this in order to get the sound from your bike to your headset/s. The basic BMW system, as it is comes from the factory, without the "optional" intercom/amplifier is only for getting the sound out of the 4 speakers. There are several good types available, in addition to the standard BMW optional system. A search of Tech tips will explain the differen ones. I installed the Auto Com and have been pleased. Its easy to install and works well.

The Pro-7-Sport LT kit is the one I installed, took me an hour total, 30 minutes if I had to do it again, is that simple. I heard it from my local dealer that Autocomm is discontinuing the "specific to certain bikes" kits, so the ones for the LT and GL will go away in favor of a replacement which will make it easier to install (I don't know how easier can it get, but). The good thing about that is you should be able to find those kits cheaper since they are going away, the kit was $649 at my local dealer, I got it from them for $369, so look for the bargain is out there.

Exchange the speakers by buying the Radio Shack headphones (33-1222 ) it will make it a whole different sound experience. You can get them for $15 sometimes on sale ($20 everyday) and the speakers pop right out and fit well into most helmets. Its an awsome mod.

DOT 4 brake fluid is NOT silicone. That is DOT 5. DOT 4 is highly hygroscopic, and will soak up moisture if left open to the atmosphere.

DOT 5 is silicone, and is NOT hygroscopic to any real degree, but it cannot be mixed with DOT4.

The brake fluid in the LT is DOT 4, and should be changed periodically even if the bike has not been ridden. It is sealed from atmosphere pretty well though, with the rubber diaphragms in the master cylinder reservoirs.

And I belive the same applies to the coolant right?
So even if the bike was not riden, ones should change those fluids at least every 2 years.
