Just posted a note on the main site also about this. Put the LT in for its 10,000km service and a waranty check was added for the ABS system. Seems I'm supposed to have received a letter from BMW about it, but I've seen nothing. If I find out any more I'll add...
Or let me know if you know!

OK, so I queried as to what the "special service check" for the ABS was about.
I was told that in Europe there had been some negative discussion over the internet regarding the ABS, enough to warrant BMW initialising a service check on the bikes, and this was done under warranty, at least for my '05.
I wasn't told a year model that it may have started with, so if you're heading in for a service with an authorised dealer, it may pay to ask.
Mine all checked out OK.

That's not quite the whole story. Apparently a rider was testing the ABS by repeatedly doing full-on braking runs. Eventually the battery wore down, the power assist failed, and he slammed into a wall and died. Tragic to be sure, but it can't really be considered "normal" operation of the bike.

As part of BMW's CYA, they issued a service bulletin offering free brake checks, just to ensure owners that their brakes are working correctly. I doubt BMW would go to that trouble due solely to some "negative discussion" or every LT would have already been recalled for rear drive issues.

thanks meese, always better to get more & accurate details.
The ABS on mine caused me a little concern ('cause it worked!) at one point on my track day after trying to pull up at turn 2 from about 160kmh into a 30-40kmh left turn.
Almost had it slowed enough until the ABS released the breaks several times, wound up having to go straight onto the dirt but slow enough to be very controlled, then was able to ease it round back to the tarmac off on a hard charge again....
That was 2 days after they did the service check. :)

I never activated the ABS on my track day, but I was amazed at how hard I could brake, over and over again, and not upset the bike. I just kept wishing I had a bit more throttle to play with . . .
