Mostly an oil change, what most do is complete oil change. engine oil, tranny oil and rear drive oil change. If you DIY, 4qts eng oil, 1 qt of rear drive oil. Add rear drive and whats left will do the tranny. Be sure to get smash washers for drain plugs on rear drive and tranny. oil filter will have O-ring for filter cover and crush washer with it. You'll have to ask for two other crush washers.

Check in your area for tech session and someone there will teach you the nuances of the oil change.

DIY will save you considerably on cost. I usaually spend about $50 on 6K.
12K is usually quite a bit more and involves a lot more adjustments. I should be finishing mine in the next week or two.

Be sure to check the HOW section on procedures.

The dealer would also put it on their diagnostic system and run through a check to see if any faults show up. The brake system needs to be flushed at least once every two years. The service is basically a 6K.. Check the site for the service schedule and it will give you a good idea of what they do. One local dealer here in Denver wants between 200.00 to 300.00 for it which I think is alot. Also, our dealers here say this is the time (at 18K) if you want to change from dino oil to synthetic..

This site? How...where, I must say I'm finding very dificult to find anything on this forum. Search doesn't seem to pull up crap and when it does nothing is related to my search.

Hey, TBob - you can find the various maintenance schedule items and mileage info here (http://www.bmwlt.net/ubbthreads/showthreaded.php?Cat=&Board=K1200LT&Number=148614&page=3&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=0&vc=1), just check the attachment on the post, and print out a hardcopy if you wanna do some of the work by yourself. Good luck.

Can you give an estimate of the 12K cost? I also need the annual service which I understand is more costly with the updated brake system.

Just took delivery of an 01 Icon with 10,500 miles. Thought I would call the dealer for the cost of a 12k service. Nearly died when he told me $903.00 all in incl taxes.
Having read some of the posts here I can see that's reasonable as i'm talking canuck dollars!!! About 752US.

Not sure I know what you mean by annual..It was a straight 12K svc..Reached that milestone in about 7 months of riding after buying LT brand new..

BMW has 2 service types as indicated in the Owners Service manual ... one is the 6k, 12k, 18k etc. services that include things like oil, valves, throttle bodies, etc. Then there is the "annual service" which includes things like brake/clutch fluid flush. You service book as separate sections where these services are stamped when performed by the dealer. So if the $800 price is only for the 12K service that sounds a bit high .... but if it includes the annual stuff then it sounds a bit better. Just wondering.

I thought prices here were bad. I just had the 36,000 mile check done. Even replacing brake pads the bill was $431.
