Hi everyone. I am in the process of working a deal on a new 2009 R1200RT with the dealer. I was just looking for some advice on the issue of pricing to see if what I'm getting is a fair deal in the BMW world.
$18,995.00 with premium package
495.00 freight
495.00 dealer prep
1500.00 discount
$18,485.00 selling price
There is a trade involved. The trade value he is giving me is FAIR. Not great, but not bad either. I am also getting the 49 liter keyed case from BMW as a promo item.
As far as the bike is concerned I love it. Demo'd the 1300GT which is fantastic but there is something that is hard for me to quantify about the 1200RT that I like more.
I would appreciate any comments you would care to make. Thanks in advance.

Here in San Diego the local dealer does beat your price but not by much. You have to ask for the free top case and a discount. I bought one last month and was able to wangle the extended warranty for zero.
I took a haircut on my trade... Oh well, I love the RT.

I purchased a new 09 on Oct. 1st. The dealer sold the bike for $18,880, and I did receive a top case due to the promo. I traded in my 07 GT and he was fair about the pricing. It seems you've got a good deal.
Enjoy!

There are so many factors to a "fair" deal it's difficult to be "fair" when judging how good one deal is over another. The key is are you "happy" with the deal? That's bottom line. When I bought mine I was in the same frame of mind as you seem to be. Is the deal the right deal, fair, equitable, great, etc... After the fact I recall thinking how others did just a little bit better. I also heard some did worse. Then I was riding my RT one day and realized that damn, I can't get this grin off my face... :D The worry about good deal / bad deal vanished. The bike is simply awesome. Go get it.

Thinking about biting the bullet tomorrow and trading in my 04 RT on a new one. My flesh is at a weak point. I'm looking at $18,950 with a $5800 trade in. I know there has to be a big difference in the way these two bikes ride. I have ridden the new one for about 45 minutes but that is not near enough time.

I don't think BMW dealers are supposed to be charging "dealer prep" fees.

I had the same experience and as you it is October and end of season.
You have to decide if you want to keep old bike and sell it in spring or
take the deal and move on and in time as long as you are happy
with RT and don't have problems with it as we did with 2007 models
you will stop thinking about what you lost in trade in..
You know that they are there to make money and their over head is not in
giving away bikes ..
As long as you feel somewhat happy and you are not losing 2 to 4 k
if you sell your bike in spring then go for it..
You have to want the bike that is the bottom line..
Good Luck in your decision...Joe

I bought my 09RT at the end of July and got a $1000 discount off the msrp + the 49 liter top case. Traded my 05 GS (which I bought from them new) and they gave me within about $1000 or so of what I could most likely have sold it for privately. I saved almost that amount off the sales tax here in WA state and didn't have to contend with any characters selling it myself. Even though I loved my GS, I have no regrets about the RT.
Go for it!

For me the bottom line is if you got the bike you want and enjoy riding it,you got a good deal. I wouldn't let a couple hundred dollars either way upset me.

+1. I traded two bikes in on my 09 RT. They gave me a little over Kelly BB value for each and I paid them MSRP. They threw in a couple of little extras. I was treated well. Overall, nobody got screwed in the deal. I got the bike I wanted, unloaded two bikes I didn't want, and didn't have to deal with all the eBay/ Craigslist BS and haggling that comes with private sales.
If you're looking to make out like a bandit on the deal, I suggest you consider what sort of long term relationship you will want with your dealer. You will want your dealer to go to bat for you at some point.
Just my $0.02. I love this bike.

Just rode my new one home from Nashville. The 04 RT was running so good on the way up I was having separation anxiety but after about 50 miles on the new one it was all over.

Decent deal. If you're a wrencher, get them to throw in the RepRom Maintence CD.

Thank you to everyone that responded to my question. I appreciate everyone's input and comments. The bike is the bike and the price is the price. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't getting taken over the coals. :) I figure the better deal I can get upfront the more it gives me to spend on stuff for the new bike. It seems that I'm more or less in the ballpark. I'll post an update as soon as the bike's in the garage ready to ride.
Hey Motorman I have a question for you. Are you using the RT as a duty bike? If yes, how do you think it handles compared to the HD? I mean for the cone work, etc.

Sounds like the exact same deal I'm getting minus the "dealer prep" charge.
Loaded R1200RT (premium package, radio/CD, ASC, etc)
$21750 MSRP
$495 destination charge
$1500 discount
$20745 selling price

Mine doesn't have the Radio/CD or the ASC. It has what's listed as the premium package on BMW's website. $18,995 list. Your's is truly "loaded". Congrats on your new bike. Enjoy it and be safe.

There is no comparison. They same reason folks ride a BMW applies to "cone work", with a cop bike. It is lighter, easier to steer, smoother, not hot, no clutch adjustments, if you go to police rodeo, you would understand that comment, lol.
The only negative comments that I hear, and it does not bother me, is on the BMW you sit higher so your tight turns, you "really" have to lean the motorcycle. Harley has better low end grunt, which only comes to play when you are in rodeo, not a big deal training.
BMW, to me, hands down, but I am probably wrong, cause I get told that Harley has 90% of the police market in the US. ;)
Because this a public forum, I will not trash Harley and can say that the motor company has come long way since I patrol one in 1997. Brakes, engine, frame, but believe all this was because of the RTP, coming into the market.

Thanks for the reply Motorman. I do in fact go to the Southeast Police Rodeo every year in Pompano Beach. I have several friends that ride in it. I also do the exercises myself as part of a HD Drill Team. That's pretty much why I asked you what I did.
I wasn't aware there were departments in FL that rode BMW's. Maybe your department was here at the Rodeo and I missed seeing the Beemers.

Just to sweeten the deal, you might ask for a steep discount on any farkles you might buy from him.

We have never been to the Southeastern. We have are own in Feburary and go to Charleston SC each year for the last 5 years.
This is a sad year for our department. First, our BMW dealership closed a month ago, fleet is srambling to get new motorcycles, yup Harley's.
Second is that I only have 2 months left in the motor unit. Been told that after 15 years as a motor cop, time to move on. I have enjoyed being a motor cop and it is the best job in the department.
