View Full Version : Computer dial-up question(s)

Being limited in computer knowledge I am having great difficulty in trying to get my iMac connected to the internet via dial-up.
My intentions are to try and use the AirPort wireless as the router which is connected to an Apple modem which is connected to phone line.
The computer recognizes the AirPort wireless connection but I am "dumber than a fifth grader" and can not figure out how to configure the AirPort for a dial-up connection. (NOTE: Was used for cable connection and old residence)
Any of you compututer gurus have any suggestions for this idiot?
thanks

I don't think what you're trying to do will work. I don't believe the AirPort can be configured for dial out. You'll have to connect the modem directly to the Mac.

Thanks Doug,
I was hoping that I wouldn't have to have the modem directly into the computer. Will have to see if I can get a phone line run and give it another try.

What "AirPort" model do you have?

I think it is Airport Express Base station. I am at work and it is at home so not 100% sure. It has a USB port, a Fire wire port and a phone cable port. Unit must be plugged into a 120 VAC outlet also.
I am going to try and attach a couple of pictures from the Apple Store site.

The plug you are calling a phone cable port is a 10/100BASE-T Ethernet port for connecting a DSL modem, cable modem, or Ethernet network. It is not for a telephone modem. You will need one computer with a telephone modem hooked to a POTS (Plain Old Telephone Service) connection. Once you make the telephone connection with one computer, it can be shared on your home network with either wired or wireless connections.

RoyRoy... you should seriously consider getting a DSL phone line added to your service. A dial up modem will be painfully slow at 56kb.
If you get a DSL (or cable) internet connection, you can connect the DSL modem to the Airport Express you indicated that you have. Then configure the Airport Express to create a wireless network. You can then connect your iMac (assuming it is of recent vintage and has an airport card in it) to your wireless network and not have to run a new phone wire. The Airport Express is not designed to act as a wired router, only wireless.

There is no DSL service offered where I live. I have two options available, Dial-up or satellite. And satellite is to expensive.

I am pretty sure only the first couple of airport routers were able to use dial-up and those were available several years ago. It was not a feature very many people would use anymore.
I agree that you will probably have to run a phone line to plug directly into your iMac.

No cell phone 3G, either? Much faster than dial up. If you're in a Verizon 3G area, I've heard you can bootleg internet access using your cell phone as a modem.

Probably have 3G in this area but I don't have a cell phone with 3G capabilities either.

You need a USB 3G modem as found here:

thanks to Jay & Graham I did a little more investigating and I can get Verizon 3G service with out having a cell phone so I am going to give this a try. About the same price as satellite but offers the feature of being able to take it with me when I travel which satellite does not do. Also does not require a satellite dish nor wires run into my home which in my opinion is another plus. Verizon also gives 30 day trial period which none of the satellite providers I talked would offer.
thanks to all who replied and helped this computer illiterate with his decision.

Any time, Roy! If you ever do get a CP that works on the Verizon network, I have been told that you can bootleg internet using the CP as a "modem" for free or less than the $60 per month for a separate modem.
