Smoky Mountain Fall Reunion 2009, October 22 - 24 …

It is time to start the roster for this, the Fifth annual installment of SMFR. Just what is SMFR? It is a gathering of friends who happen to love motorcycles, love to ride them, love to work on them, love to accessorize them, and love to be around other riders that love them too. In addition to a great social gathering of riders in the Great Smoky Mountains, there are great roads to ride and outstanding food to eat.<O:p

It is held at the Iron Horse Motorcycle Lodge located in Stecoah, NC hosted by John and Charlene Powell (http://www.ironhorsenc.com/ (http://www.ironhorsenc.com/) Phone 828-479-3864) with private and semi private cabins, bunkhouse and camping as well as RV sites. Check out their web site and drop them a line or e-mail to make your reservation. Be sure and mention it is for SMFR as I have blocked out several rooms.<O:p

My work schedule and CCR duties have keep me pretty busy lately so I thought I would try a different approach for this year’s reunion. Pot Luck!! Not in the food sort of way but a sharing of ride tails, stories and memorable moments. Bring your favorite tall tale, adventure story, photos of a recent trip or a classic movie to share with the rest of the group. We still have the great roads to ride, food to eat and the people as well. The fall colors will most likely be at peak this year for the event and will make for some beautiful riding days. I am not opposed to doing a light tech session if someone has a need but I could use a break. Let’s all see what we can do this fall to make this a memorable time.<O:p

I talked to Charlene today to get an update on the menu and conditions up there.

Yesterday the Cherohala Skyway, Blue Ridge Parkway and parts of 441 were closed due to snow!!!! They have not seen the sun all week until today.

The good news is the weather is predicted to be warmer next week. Highs will be between 67 and 55 and lows between 39 and 51. Of course there can always be sharp dips in temperature at the higher altitudes so dress accordingly. Thursday and Sunday appear free of rain with some potential on Friday(40%) and Saturday(30%).

Did not get a report on fall foliage. The menu update is Thurday Cowbow BBQ with brisket and pork, Friday is Octoberfest with Brats and pork chops (no snitzel) with german and regular potatoe salad. Charlene said if you have a favorite German beer for Friday night to let her know by Thurday and she would make a beer run for us. Saturday goes without saying, that fantastic prime rib.

I can hardly wait to get up there. Got the new clutch in the LT and a good shakedown today has us ready to go.

I just finished packing & loading the bike for my next two long weekend trips. I found a new waterproof bag at Gander Mountain today for $ 30. Its big enough to hold my fall & winter riding gear + four days of clothes. That leaves my top case & top bag empty for the little odds & ends.

I can't wait to get there thursday night.

Been up and down around the mountains lately and I think the foliage is going to be just about dead on. If we can get the sun to shine, the color should be as good as the food. Pre-packing will start tomorrow. We will see you around the campfire.

The weather has been good all week, kinda of cool but today mid 70's here and abundant sunshine, now let's fast-forward to Friday, a high probability of rain and cooler temps (is it Fall??!)

Sorry to say, but Vonda and I are having to cancel our plans to attend. Overcome by other events.:( Plans now are to make STC in the spring.:) The good news is now there is a mountain side semi-private cabin room available for you Lynn. Ya'll have fun and we'll catch you next time. The colors across Cherohola should be great this weekend.

Jean and I have arrived and were very surprized that they have paved the drive in and around the main lodge including the bike parking area. Just be sure and use the side stand plates they have supplied in great numbers to keep the new asphalt in great shape.

Jean and I will be heading up the Blue Ridge to the Pisgah Inn tommorrow and then 151 down the mountain and back through Maggie Valley. Should be a great ride. Everyone have a safe journey up and we look forward to seeing you all.

Well after making resevations.....then work screwing up...then resolving that....then planning to meet my Brother Tim from Fla. Then he gets into an accident in S.Carolina....He is okay but not able to attend......I will hopefully now make it Saterday Afternoon.......Will call Ironhose enroute to try to get my cancelled bunk room back...see ya later

We missed you guys this year but mark your calendars for Spring Training Camp; April 15,16, &17 2010 and SMFR; in October 21,22, & 23 2010. We'll hold a spot for you. Good seeing all the good folks at Ironhorse for the Smoky Mountain Fall Reunion 2009 version, thanks to John Z. for heading up the party again and getting things rolling for 2010.

If you folks get a chance to stop in at Tellico Outfitters in Tellico Plains, be sure to tell Mike thanks for his continued support for our gathering....again he donated several nice prizes, we decided to auction them off for the gratituty for the staff at Ironhorse.....

Mike gives some great deals for folks that make it over to his place while at the event....not a bad ride either...

As always, had a fantastic weekend at Iron Horse even though we had a bunch of rain on Fri. Thankfully all that money I spent on new camping gear after the great flood of last year paid off. Tent stayed nice and dry.

My thanks go out for John for coordinating the event once again and of course to Charlene and John and their staff for making us feel like family and of course feeding us very well as usual.

Got home safe and sound around 7:00pm after a long 10 hours in the saddle to a balmy 85 deg FL evening. Getting a little old for those long days of riding but having had the opportunity to visit with some folks whom I hadn't seen in quite awhile as well as meeting and riding with some new friends makes it all worth while. Looking forward to the next visit.

I had a great weekend. I got to ride about 200 miles each day. Friday Ised8m (Kent) & I tip toed our way thru the touchless bike wash all day & when it wasn't foggy we still had good views. Looking forward to spring.

Anybody have to reroute because of the rockslide on I-40 ?.
