Mirror issues R1200RT and K1200LT

Here is a little trick I have applied to my R1200RT (works the same on the K1200LT).
It could happen that you hit the outside of a mirror during your ride or while moving the bike around.
A very smart guy at BMW came out with a fantastic idea!

Another tip to prevent mirror damage, remove mirrors, drill 4 holes two at each end, one on each side of the holding pins that the ball pushes into, then install a small wire tie pulling the holding pins together, now you mirror will take allot more force to remove and no more mirrors coming off when hitting pot holes..matthew

I have no first hand knowlege of the K LT mirrors but a 12" plastic wire tie works great on the R1200RT mirror and costs only a few cents. No drilling is required.

What is new about that? We have been tethering LT mirrors since right after the LT came out. Some use plastic wire ties, others, like myself, use a loop of nylon covered stainless steel fishing leader.

Steve Shreeve (katnapinn) smacked a deer in the head with his right side mirror yesterday --- broke the mirror casing AND the heavy duty, thick, plastic tie that he had used as a tether. This isn't the first time we've heard of those thangs snapping and failing to perform as a tether. Much better solution is the coated and braided steel leader line as David Shealey described. Ole Toad's mirror(s) have been knocked off several times in the last 6 years and the leader tether is still in place. jm3cw.
