I am about to pull the trigger on a radar detector to share between my RT and LT. So it needs to be somewhat portable as well as reliable. I have narrowed it down to either a Valentine V1 or a TPX. I have pros and cons on both and I believe both to be good units.

Valentine V1:
Pros: Very sensitive, display shows direction and number of bogeys. Number counter is useful when multiple LEOs are laying in wait for their next hapless victim. Good riding buddy had one on his RT and is very pleased with it.

Cons: Not waterproof! Care must be taken to ensure unit doesn't get wet. Costly to replace if it does. Additional $50.00 for sound box if you want to plug into Autocom or use visual alert. Visual alert is additional $45. Peripherals are proprietary and expensive (much like the initial Apple computers).

TPX:
Pros: Waterproof. Extra large buttons for use with gloved hands. No expensive peripherals required to use with Autocom. Visual indicator is only $35.00

Cons: No bogey counter or direction indicator. Not sure how it stacks up with the V1 as to sensitivity.

Both are good units I'm sure. If prices were equal, I'd buy the V1. But the V1 will be nearly $550 by the time I buy the sound module and visual alert. The TPX should be around $350 with the visual alert.

Anyone out there have any real "road time" with either, or both, of these units? Constructive input would be appreciated. TIA.

I got a new TPX unit and a new visual alert on ebay (from a dealer) for $280 shipped. I bought a wireless alert at the MOA Rally. I've only had the unit about two weeks, but so far it's fine. I figure I got it all for about half the cost of a V1.

I have a TPX that I use on the Triumph and the RL. Never have received a ticket. Only drwabacl I see is the expensive mounting solutions they sell.

I do not care how many or location of Bogey's I only want to know if they are out there.

Here's a video on the TPX. We got to meet this fellow at the Dallas International motorcycle show. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=px7b9LPRdvo&feature=player_embedded
