biking for many decades, but first BMW.
have a question: my new RT tool kit has only
five items. i understand the special tool to access
the oil tank and the double screwdriver. also the bent
torx key. what is the long item that doesn't seem to
fit anywhere? also, did I get a full kit? is this all there
is supposed to be in the pouch?......thanks........as
always, appreciate your answers......

That's all I got with the '08 RT, and I've assumed that long thing is a screw driver extension (although I haven't found a need for it).

That's all you get. Pretty cheezy for a bike that costs so much.

There is very little you can fix on the side of the road, so no tools are necessary. Some duct tape, pliers, screwdriver, torx driver and a tire repair kit should do just fine.

We all have different skill/experience levels. Granted, as our bikes (and cars) get more high tech road repairs do become limited but I at least expect enough of a tool kit to remove a wheel or replace a spark plug. Anything less is simply corporate penny pinching at our expense.

thanks for the replies. agree that the
kit is very sparce for the type of bike it is.
have always customized my own tool
kits, but am a bit disappointed in the
very basic kit on the RT......

It's definitely pretty stinky. The new CruzTools B1 kit for the BMW bikes is a great supplement, though, includes combo wrenches, torx wrenches, pliers, tape, an itty bitty little WD40 emergency packet, and it covers virtually every fastener on the bike. Look online for it, there are a few places that carry it.

Here's a pic of the kit I got with my 2009 K1200LT. A philips screwdriver and a fusepuller... :(
I haven't seen a single Philips screw on the enitre bike, and the fuses can be pulled out by hand. There's a 30.000 euro bike for ya....
(Obviously I complained and now I got a decent toolkit with lots of stuff)

Tool Kit???? What tool kit????
ohhh... You mean the little pouch with .... Ohhhhhh.... Those are tools????
Man oh man... Glad I didn't buy this thing new... That would have been disappointing.
Seriously, I would act as if there was no tool kit and just build one... You can do many road repairs as long as you don't mind taking off the plastic on the side of the road...

Bingo! That's all you can do. I've always tended to do that anyway but when it was a factory kit there was a handy place to stash it. You could carry the factory kit around town and add your supplemental kit when traveling. Now I have carry my kit full time and suffer the loss of saddlebag/trunk space when I need the space for work tools/supplies or a bag of groceries around town.

Tire plug kit and a air pump. Oh, and the cheesy kit. Throw in a couple of zipties. ;)

you got THAT many ??
I broke down and got this from Adventure Designs (http://www.advdesigns.net/ulcobmwr1gsg.html)- it's a bit of overkill and pricey but it gives me peace of mind.....

Nice kit. I may consider it even though it's a tad pricey.

bump.
What are you folks doing for a tool kit / roll on your RTs?
On my previous / other bikes I used a zippered, black cordura shaving kit bag. The tools were just tossed into the bag, loose. I sewed a piece of 1" nylon webbing with fastex buckles to cinch the thing down a little and folded the end over. The whole bag was then shoved into the tail section compartment out of the way of the seat latch.
I'd like to do something a little more elegant if possible, but it seems most of the tool kits are too large to fit in the tail section (7x6x4"). The space under the passenger seat also seems to be a bit tight (9x4" round). That leaves the radio compartment (11x8x3") ...
Got any ideas you'd like to share?
TIA. :thumb:

Geez you could practically rebuild the engine with it... all kidding aside, nice looking kit, though as you say a bit pricey.

I thought it was overpriced too but once I priced everything separately it is actually a good deal. I didn't care for the pouch or waist belt but the kit is comprehensive and of good quality IMO. I bought small craftsman tool pouches, organized everything in separate pouches, and it all fit under the tail section and seat. I take some long rides with friends every year and I like having the tools to do most repairs road side...........................to my friends Harley's that is!

I bought a tool roll from Amazon.com and (partially) filled it with things I need or think I need as I go along. I keep it in the bottom of my left side bag. I would add more stuff if I was going on a road trip.
1. Cheapo plastic spark plug/coil puller
2. 22mm front axle tool
3.E8 x E10 box end wrench
4. various torx bits, metric sockets and combination wrenches
5. cable ties, some wire, black tape, duct tape
I'll pull it out and take a picture sometime.

I did a similar thing with my R12ST.
As I had no Torx tools for home maintenance I had to by all the tools as I needed them. I duplicated some and filled out the tool bag which sits under the pillion seat now.
I can remove all torx fasteners, replace fuel control module, remove, replace wheels, exhaust mufflers, tank and a few other things I suspect.
What I did was use the toolkit tools to work on the bike to be sure I'd not missed anything. Then when happy, I reverted to my home tool box.
When I part exchanged the ST for the RT, I advised the dealer I wanted to swap tool rolls so I didn't have to repeat the process.
I should take a picture of them all laid out really.

+1 on the Adventure Designs Tool Kit. It has just about everything you need to work on your RT. Very good quality - you will not regret it.

I carry my Adventure Designs tool kit with me where ever I go. Like it has been said, it gives me piece of mind. The tool kit is expensive but if you stop and consider the cost of getting each tool separately then it is a pretty good buy. Last Spring I striped my RT down to pretty much the frame and engine and did a super clean up of the bike. Gave me something to do while waiting for riding weather. I did everything with the Adventure Designs tool kit and a torque wrench.
