Well... I just bought a 1986 Porsche 911 convertible on ebay and I need someone local to help me.
The car is in Randallstown, MD and I need for someone to look at the car before it gets shipped, just to be sure it is as advertised so I can pay the previus owner.
I am still debating whether I should fly in with Kathy and drive back, but between the airfare for 2, 2 nights at a hotel, gas, and at least a day off work... it may be a better solution to have the car shipped.
I will pay for your gas and expenses, and a little something for your bike.
I have to make a decision by Thursday morning so I can book a flight.
Any help or feedback appreciated! ;)
Check out that beauty!!! Item number: 170338509284

Gilles,

I'm sure someone closer will help you out. I just wanted to say that is one sweet ride! Your gonna look real good tooling around in that. Fun to tinker on the power plant as well.

Congrats.

Wish I could help you out. I won't be in the MD area until 3 weeks from now. Sorry my Friend.

Gilles:

FYI, the 1987-1989 911 Carreras are the ones to get since they have the G50 tranny which is much better than the pre 1987 models.

Having said that, congrats. You are going to enjoy the car. I'd opt to drive it after personally getting it checked out.

Thanks for the feedback! I was looking at a whole vintage and tried to keep the price affordable. I did not expect to be able to bid on a 1086... and win! :)

Ok. Some more items for you to check.

If the owner is a PCA member, he should have no problems having a pre-sale inspection done at a Porsche dealer or a Porsche specific shop. You'll pay for the inspection but it gives you a good peace of mind as to what you are buying.

Here's what I would look for:

Service receipts
last leak down test should be 175 all around or close to it.
clutch
boots
A/C - uh what A/C...they suck unless converted to 134a
turbo idler arm? This would be nice to have
short shifter? - nice to have
overall condition (visual for re-paint etc.)
Carfax report
Convertible - check for the mechanism.
Hope these help.

Raffy, have you had any issues getting a car you bought out of state to pass the California smog test?

Have not a bought a car from out of state. Only bikes.

On my 1987 911 targa, one of the emission parameters was close to maximum and was in compliance by 2 (e.g. mine 848 versus allowed maximum 850).

I forgot about the SMOG aspect. This could be a deal breaker and I have no idea if you can have it tested to see if it will meet CA SMOG or not.

If the owner is a PCA member, I googled PCA and found it to be Poodle Club of America...??? :rotf:
I am sure it is Porsche something something...:D

As it turns out the seller is a flake and has not responded to any of my e-mails for almost 2 days now...

I guess it means I need to heed Raffy's advice and look for a 87-89 vintage instead... Of course this means a higher price, which in turn means I'll have to wait a little longer to get my coveted vehicle.

There are some very nice ones up here. Just do a Craigslist search in the Bay Area or Sacramento.

On the other hand you can always look at http://www.specialtysales.com/

I finally got a call from the seller... I am still the new owner of the car, pending payment of course, so a trip to MD is in order.

Taking the GPS and radar detector with us... Kathy will be my co-pilot!
Life is good!!! :D

TerryThank you Terry! The seller is currently in FL until Sunday, and I am planning on traveling to MD on Friday, June 12.
I'll PM you later tonight.
Do license plates stay with the vehicle in MD (like CA), or do they stay with the owner (like FL)? I want to make sure I can drive the car back home legally.

Plates have to be turned in to MVA, unless the owner lets you barrow them and continues the insurance.
