Howdy Roger,

I have the BMW badged J&M on my '04 LT and absolutely love it. I have not used other systems on the LT and so cannot compare them, but I have no hesitency in recommending the J&M.

For some years these were the standard system supplied by BMW NA for US (and I suspect Canadian) LT's. My comments are:

1. Overall, I found them a pretty good product and would be happy to buy an LT with the system installed.
2. The in-helmet speakers were a bit iffy in that they occasionally lost one of the speakers.
3. If you ride 2-up, the volume control adjusts the volume for front & rear riders. I would have liked separate controls as when my wife rode, she had more sensitive hearing. The same is true of Vox sensitivity.
4. I ride with earplugs in and the windshield down. I found that the volume wasn't loud enough to get good clarity with say speach on the radio in certain circumstances.

Otherwise, a good product.

I also have the full J&M ComSystem and CB on mine. I have the Navigator II, my cell phone (Motorola V400), a Passport 8500 radar detector and an XM Roady 2 (via the Aux Audio Circuit) all tied into the system. I love it, but then I've had excellent service from J&M products from years of use on Goldwings (before I wised-up and got the LT!). Contrary to info from BMW, the ComSystem works through at least the '05 models, not just up to '04 as their literature lends you to believe. Hope it helps!

The J&M is a good unit, but also check out the Baehr (http://motogear4you.com/mcart/index.cgi?code=3&cat=14) unit. It's a bit pricey, but works very well and the K12-specific unit plugs right in to the bikes stock wiring harness. Plus it is adjustable in every way you may imagine, so it's easy to tune for both rider and passenger.

I love the J&M system on my LT; However I'll agree, it would be nice to have separately adjustable volume controls for the rider and passenger. My wife likes it quiet while riding and I like the tunes. Other than that it's an excellent unit. I like that it was built for the LT and sold with the LT (same warranty as the bike including the headsets). If I were buying a new LT I would certainly check out the Baer, but it's got to work with everything including a CB to make the cut.

You can see some pictures on my installation here:

I and up removing it and not using the J&M, but as far as I know, it's a good system.
But not sure if it's the best.

I have an inline volume control J&M used to build for the older style headsets used on earlier Wings. It connected right into the patch cord. Too bad they still don't offer them.

Oh yeah, I highly recommend the J&M comm system.

I have the BMW CB, which made is by them. In the last 12 years I have only used J&M products. Headsets the most. I also before the LT had bought their older products to produce sound and intercom system on my Duc., Trumiph, and RT. I love them, great company and always willing to help. The only problom I every had and not there fault was a bent connector on a plug. Can not remember if they replace or I just bought another one.

Big E did you install these components yourself? Are they plug and play? I like the idea of getting an intercom with a CB for under a grand.

RodgtcYOu should also consider the BMW plug-n-play '05-up intercom, the VOICE II (rumored to be made by Baehr -- don't know if that's true, though). Several hundred $ less than the J&M, and price-competitive with the Baehr unit. The biggest difference is the integration -- some like the "custom fit for the LT" nature of the VOICE II, some prefer the much easier install of the stand-alone Baehr unit; whatever floats your boat.

As for the J&M, my take, coming from the J&M on my previous LT's, is that the VOICE II is a definite improvement -- mostly because it taps into the radio/speakers/controls *upstream* of the radio, rather than downstream as with the J&M, and thus is better integrated into the audio system and offers greater control of various features. Don't get me wrong, the J&M is a very good unit, but time and technology has resulted in a new standard, IMO.

Howdy Roger,

Please pardon my interjection.

I did install the CB (handlebar unit) with my BMW badged J&M unit. It is "plug and play".

Yes it is all plug & play with very good instructions. If you can remove the seats, one side panel & handle bar cover to route wires, you can do it.

I have serious alternator noise and ignition noise with the J&M on a 2005 LT. The dealer has not been able to eliminate. The factory rep. ,of course, said that he could not hear the noise. J&M will not help, said it's a BMW problem. I'm stuck with a bad sounding intercom. Wish someone could come up with the fix.

As long as you have no interest in a CB radio, the VOICE II is a great system. It has as much adjustability as any system out there and the integration is flawless. However if you want CB go with the J& M.

I purchased an inline volume control for my SO's J&M (BMW Brand) at the BMW Rally in Lima last year. I believe the company was Sierra Electronics. Works great. Wife can adjust the volume of her headset...or turn it off if she does not like the music I'm listening to.

I have the J&M ComSystem in my '99 K12 and think it's the best single improvement I've made in the bike. I have my FRS/GMRS radio, a CB radio, GPS, and my cell phone plugged into the unit and all work extremely well. The thing I like about the J&M system the most, is that I can listen to both my FRS/GMRS and my CB at the same time, although I can only transmit on one at a time. I don't think you can do that with any other product on the market.
I've installed a Baehr system on a friend's 2004 R1150RT, and although the installation was easy, and he loves it, I don't think he gets the utility offered by the ComSystem. The J&M unit has the controls at your fingertips, either on the RCU or the handlebar controls. The Baehr, or the other popular alternative, Autocom are more difficult to adjust on the fly, although I don't recommend complicated adjustments on any of them while riding.
The technical support staff at J&M is second to none. Although their ability to offer input is limited due to the fact that the product they made is licensed to BMW, they will do what they can to assist you in your needs or questions about their product.
I corresponded with John Lazzeroni today about a matter concerning the system and he got right back to me.
You can't go wrong with the BMW ComSystem manufactured by J&M.
