At 3:30 yesterday afternoon I got a call from Tom our club Prez. He said we has 2 riders down just south of Lampases Tx. As I arrived on the scene I was happy to see both Wayne & Shelby were up and walking around. Both of them went down in the very same spot on the road but about 10 minutes apart. DPS said there was a "oily" substance on the road and with the light rain that had just started it made for a VERY bad combination. Both bikes just began to slide then low sided. Thank God for ATGATT as both sets of gear were shredded to bits. Each rider has very miner road rash on hip and lower back from the long slides on there backs. Both bike are most likely totaled per Lone Star. The accident was at the intersection of Hyway 183 & FM 963 (Oakalla road). Here are some pics that Shelby sent me. The RT slid so long on the pavement that it wore a hole in the left valve cover and the lid of the side case. The KS slid then rolled braking the handle bars .

Glad to see they walked away. Can only imagine what would have happened if they had not been wearing protective gear.

That's the very same intersection that almost got me and Misty one day.... Messy13 was following..... it was a skittish ride through that intersection for sure... and it was taining pretty hard..

Glad everyone's on the mend...

Glad to hear that they are not hurt. I hit a small patch of diesl fuel
a couple of weeks ago, back end wiggled.

"summer black ice " is fuel spills on the road

Protective gear is a life saver. Thankfully they were prepared.

What type of protective gear were they wearing? Synthetic or leather?

So I think you're saying Synthetic. :p

P.S. Glad they weren't hurt to bad. And if folks have been squirrelly through there before, then it more than just what's been spilled recently. IMHO.

Thank God both riders are ok - atgatt once again proves its value. Bikes can be replaced, people can't.

Amen on the ATGATT!!! I hae to see good bikes turned to scrap, but being ablr to tell the tale is a blessing. The gear functioned as designed. Bikes and gear are replaceable, not so with people.

ATGATT is what I consider the "sacrificial" material; glad the riders are okay and able to tell their stories!

Glad both riders are ok. Had a Harley rider ask me why I wear the stuff in the summer in Houston. I told him I was just carrying it to the crash. Hope I never have to use my gear again. I'd much rather just wear it.

I try to watch the condition of the roadway for clues to potential hazards, and I'm not saying these guys could have avoided this. However it's always wise to learn from others experience and I notice in the photos that the traffic lanes are worn smooth and are "grooved" which causes water to pool in the tire tracks. This is evident if you compare their appearance to the shoulder. My guess is that there was no oily substance on the road, simply standing water due to normal wear patterns. If you look at the photo of the bikes on the trailer you can see water still pooled in the left tire track of the right lane. It looks to me like maybe they hydro-planed which is almost impossible to recover from on two wheels. I'm glad everyone is ok.
