I'll be riding through the SW next week and was looking for cool places to see and of course curvy roads. I stumbled upon Cyn De Chelly and it looks really cool on google maps. How are the roads in the park? Paved? Is it self guided or do I need to take a guided tour? And lastly, Can I get a hotel nearby at the last minute without reservations? I was thinking about taking hwy 191 up from Tucson.

Uh........unless things have really changed; it is pretty much an un-improved sort of a tour..............there are tours available in jeeps and 6x6's even horse back....................
It is well worth the stop and a lot of great canyon photo ops. The whole trip down 191 is a great ride but you might want to check on line with the National Park Service information....................
Have a great time.............it's really 'enchanted' sort of country.............. :)

To drive on the canyon bottom, a 4-wheel drive vehicle, a Park Service permit and an authorized Navajo guide are required. The fee is $15 an hour for 1 vehicle, $5 an hour for each additional vehicle with a 5-vehicle limit per guide.

The White Mountains in AZ/NM along 191 offers a lot of nice riding opportunities. Don't forget Pie Town, NM.

Thanks for the info gentlemen. I have ridden that section of hwy 60 a couple of times, Did I blink and miss something important? Is the whole thing all about the pies? I usually stop in springerville and have a green chili burrito at Los dos molinas. Last time it was so hot I could not taste anything for three months. The staff there warned me about the green chili burrito being way to hot. I laughed at them and said I have never had green chili that was to hot. They ended up being right after I could only eat 4/5 of it. However, In my defence they must have put a lot of Habanero peppers in it.

We rode the road on the north side of the canyon. Every few miles or so there is a right turn which goes in a mile or so to the canyon rim. We stopped at all of them and it was worth it. I don't recall any motels around there.

The hike down on the White House trail is wonderful and fairly easy, about 1 1/2 mile each way. It is a bit steep on the way up, but not real difficult for someone in decent shape. My wife and I did it in our forties and we were smokers. Bring a bottle of water, and some money. It's hard to resist some of the trinkets down near the White House.
I will never forget one hike down. I was watching an elderly Dinč woman herding sheep with a large staff. She was dressed in very traditional clothing, very beautiful and colorful. Except on her feet was a well worn pair of Air Jordan Nikes. Enjoy yourself, it's a wonderful place. Stay away around graduation night. The local high schoolers party hard down in the canyon.

IMHO there is no beautiful place in the world than the canyon country of Souther Utah and Northern Arizona! It is breathtaking view after breathtaking view! Take your time as the vistas change considerably throughout the day with the most gorgeous views occuring around sunrise and sunset. Be sure you see the Vermillion Cliffs on the Navajo Reseration in Northern AZ. I accidently happened across the cliffs near sunset while driving our motorhome. I have made a point to arrive close to sunset everytime I happen to be that way. It can't be described in words nor will photos do it justice. Stunning! Crap, words fail again!
I envy you your trip.
