I went out yesterday and purchased an FM transmitter to use with my MP3Player. I had been playing it through a cassette adaptor and while I was sataisfied witht the sound quality I wanted to check out the wiireless option. I purchased a Belkin unit from frys for $25. It had an auto off function and the transmitter was completed tunable (no presets).

The device works as advertised but the sound quality was sub par. The sound was muddy with most of the high end missing. Switching between it, the cassette adaptor (my mp3 player has two output jacks), and an local FM station it was quite obvious how poor the sound quality was. This was the case when using it wit the boombox I keep at the office and the car stereo.

I can't speak for other brands of FM transmitters but this was one sucks

At the old forum I post a comment on many FM transmitter I personally tested (could not find it there... sorry ).
But the overall result was the one you found: all sucks.
I tested about 5 of them.
Neither is good. Some folks here, who live in less radio populated area, can have a good use w/o the need to change frequencies constant but on all of them the sound quality is really poor. And I'm not a sensitive ears guy. I can listen to a MP3 ripped in 128 and 196 and tell no difference...
