Most BMW's are ugly and the K1300gt is no exception.
The only sleek one is the K1200LT.
The GT may be functionally and technically better but I wager that most bikers want to show off their bike. All the guys with the chrome laden bikes prove that and people like us who buy plastic coated bikes like Wings and LTs make that sacrifice for comfort but we still want it to look sleek and distinctive.

Everybody has an opinion! What is important, though, is that you can ride and enjoy what you have! I'm replacing my 2006 R1200RT with a 2009 K1300GT.

Wayne you are entitled to your own ridiculous opinion. :histerica :rotf: :histerica

I thought I would throw that out there before the sh*t hits the fan from some of the more zealous fans of the GT jump in here.

Me, being one of the chrome laden types, must say I really liked the looks of the 09 GT I saw at a Tech Session recently. It just looked like power and speed. If I was into the sport bike look I think I would be inclined to take one for a spin, but like you I am in it for the comfort. Personally I think the GT is one of BMW's better looking bikes now (Grif's is the best looking one out there by far, but that is because of the paint job ;) ) but I agree the LT looks better.

There is NO WAY the LT is better lookiing than the GT Again, depends on each individual. I still think the LT is much better looking, and to me the GT is just another look alike bike, hard to tell the difference in it and many other bikes from any distance.

JPSpen, that is one good looking bike. It is on my radar for future purchase, I just can't do it now. The 1200C is the best looking bike BMW makes IMO.

The 1200C was going to be my second choice had the 1200LT not worked out. I think those will be the big money collectors items of the future. Hey..... Jay Leno has one. I would get one but that would make cycle #3 and divorce isn't all that appealing to me. :D

I saw a K1300GT on the street today - the first one I've seen outside of a bike show or a dealer's showroom. Nice-looking bike - subjective opinion, of course.

And John, I've always thought of the CLC as the Mae West of BMW bikes: big and curvey!

Well you know what they say, opinions are like assholes, everyone has one and most of them stink. :rotf:

I don't really care what you or anyone else thinks about the GT's looks, I like it and that's all that matters to me. And most of the "bikers" you mention are posers who want to look like they are a badass who rides when most couldn't go 50 feet without having to polish something, stop for a beer, or scare themselves because they put their feet up on the pegs. Please, I have dead bugs on my GT that are more badass that 90% of those people.

Well, Wayne, I'm NOT sure most BMW riders are that superficial. I bought both my LT and GT for their function over their form. That whole sleek and distinctive thing is meaningless.

Hi Barry,

Almost the opposite.
I owned an '08 K1200GT, 1st owner sold it @ 300 miles, I sold it @ 2,300ish miles. I'm back on an '05 R1200RT.

I'm not sure that I'd call either of 'em pretty bikes. On balance I prefer the appearence of the RT.

GT looks fine from a side-on perspective, where it really fails, IMO, is the 3/4 front view.

Different strokes...

barryRT
Mar 22nd, 2009, 8:01 am
I like the looks of the RT and the GT. The 4 cylinder should have less vibration and definitely more power. My top case fits and so do my side-bag liners. The GT has adjustable handlebars and a warranty as mine was about to expire. I'm torn between red or blue.

Only with BMW can you own the ugliest, the most beautiful, AND the most functional bike all wrapped up in one it's called a GS. Being just the best all these things it removes the need (urge) to have three separate bikes which helps to cut down on the divorce rate.

Again, depends on each individual. I still think the LT is much better looking, and to me the GT is just another look alike bike, hard to tell the difference in it and many other bikes from any distance.

And . . . in the GT's case that distance is usually a long, long way away disappearing at a high rate of speed.

Ok - look at when things were designed...

The LT dates back to the mid 90's, when BMW was into curves - see the R1100RT, R1100RS for instance.

The GT dates from BMW moving into "slab" sides for want of a better term, so it is keeping with its stablemates - the 12GS, R12RT, R12ST (no more).

Personally, I think phots do it a dis-service and its nicer in the flesh, and in my opinion, suits a lighter colour than dark because of the size of the side panels.

The new grill on the side is designed to off-set this, but I don't think it does, and I've ordered the big "K" logo to break up the huge panels.

As for ugly or pretty - just look at the original LT pics - it looked ugly as sin, but in the flesh, looked much better with smooth flowing lines - but times have changed...

LT stands for little truck...over weight, high cg, tipsy, bulbus.....:histerica

I loved my LT............ I just preferr riding the GT due to more power and better handling.

If I had the garage space, I would own both, like many members do!

Kind of agree. LaNett and I had this discussion just this past weekend. I've concluded that the beauty of the BMW bikes (to me) is their industrial practicality (ugliness). They look industrial, like something you'd see on a factory floor or something, but almost every line, cut and curve has a purpose- it's not "just" for style (usually). I'd rather have the ugly, industrial beauty over shiny, shiny for the sake of shiny, shiny.

I'm not looking at the bike, I'm looking down the road at the next corner. And all that most other riders usually see is my tail light getting smaller as I pull away. Well, lets face it. It is a little "different" to look at. And coming off a totally decked out Road King I can say that I am going through a little withdrawl as I sit on the new GT and watch the snow melt from the driveway (finally). It does take some getting used to, that is a lot of plastic - but it is cool....
You know what, end of day, it looks like "my bike" and that's just right!

I ride a K1200LT and like it, but beauty is in the love and work done to a bike. Take my brothers bike, he does everything himself, he took it apart and his son painted it. It used to be the baby blue, but he had it done in white, the picture is before he put a HD rack on the trunk. That has real shine and bling. So beauty is in the eye of the beholder and the owner. Be happy, & ride safe.
