Folks I need your advice. I was at one of the local dealer and here is the deal that I am getting:
2009 R1200RT, all the options except:
1. Radio/CD Player
2. Anti Theft Alarm
Total suggested retail price $19,775 + Destination = $495
Total suggested Price $20,250
OK now here are the freebies the that they are throwing in and these are list price and I am sure that the dealer cost is 20% to 25% less.
1. Top Case 49Liter List Price $895
2. keyed Lock $30
3. Saddle bag protectors Left $70
4. Saddle bag protectors Right $70
5. Engine head guards $132
6. Labor $150
Total $1,347
1. My total out the dor price during first negotiation was $ 23,568
2. Second negotiation new OUT THE DOOR price is $22,200
My question to those that bought a similarly equipped 09 R1200RT that I am about to commit is, is this a good price? Am I near ball park of those that bought that same bike with the same options?
Thank you, looking forward to your feedback even if you bought the 07s & 08s 12RTs.

With the economy and what I'm seeing others paying, that seems way high to me. JMO. Good luck!

I don't know where you all are getting your great prices, but I have visited two BMW dealers here they are only selling these at MSRP...
Are those prices before tax, license, & doc fees?

OK I mis-quoted the prices above and here is the correct interpretation:
MSRP = $20,250
Now the dealer is throwing in for free the 49case, keyed lock, left & right saddle bag guards, engine head guards, + labor = $1,453
So MSRP $20,254 less $1,453 = $18,796 is the price of an 09 R1200RT taxes, license, & docs NOT included. Now since all 50 states have different cost for the taxes, license, and docs fees, it is not really fair to use OUT the door price because it will vary form state to state.
I hope the above makes sense. So the question to your all 09 R1200RT buyers, those that bought one off the show room floor, not demo bikes or high milage is:
Is these close to what you paid for in you states in the last 3 months?

You are right different areas of the country appear to have different pricing and dealerships that may or may not be willing to go below MSRP.
Have you gone to the other dealership in San Diego to get a quote? You are fortunate to have more than one dealership in your area and should be able to work that to your advantage. Working one dealership against the other may get you better results.
The freebies you mentioned may not appear be so "free" if you can get a better price for the bike elsewhere.
Good luck.

Seems a bit high, but if you plan on keeping the bike a long time, I think in the long run a few hundred bucks is less important than getting the bike you really want from a dealer you think you can depend on. If you pick up one from another dealer, you'll need to figure in the travel costs.
I wouldn't pay any documentation fees (if that's what you meant by "docs"). That one always gets me. The dealer wants $75 to $100 to complete the sales "paperwork" like somehow that work is above and beyond their normal overhead costs. Don't pay it.
I'd ask the dealer to throw in free 600 mile service and the BMW Repair Manual DVD as part of the price.

Isn't that top case and lock part of a BMW sponsored summer sales promotion? Don't think your dealer is footing the bill on that part of the deal.

You guys wouldn't want to know what we have to pay Down Under :(
Mine was pretty much the same spec as this discussion plus the radio/CD (standard for RT/SE spec here) and cost $A35k ($US30k)

we never get to buy one for less than list here unless there is a demo involved. New is new and the most I ever saw on a left over last year model was only 1500 bucks. Considering what you get hit on trade back in later a years depreciation is more than that.
So I don't worry so much about the price and make sure I get a dealer I want to have service my bike. That is where the real cost comes in and if they are really good and reasonable on service that means a lot to me.
Atlalnta BMW has done me right . I paid 14 K new for my O8 RT with my old 02 R model on trade. It had some issues but the bike would have cost me over 18K plus tax with the extras I had on it and I got some nice goodies for discounted prices as well. They are really thorough on the service end , though there are some I've heard did not agree with that , my personal experience has been positive.
Seems to me you get what you pay for most of the time if your lucky

I'm kind of lost, but I usually am, but the dealer is throwing in accessories and subtracting the price of the accessories from the MSRP? I'm pretty sure you will end up paying 20250 for the bike.
BMW is offering the following. 1K off list, low financing, or 1,200/1,500 (can't remember which one) in accessories.
Their not giving you anything.

Minus the accessories they are throwing in, I bought the same bike last year. All optoions minus radio/anto-theft.

Last August. Not really a fair comparison buying a bike in March (in the current model year) and buying it in August (End of model year and a bit past the prime riding season) don't ya think?
The '09 bacame available in for order September! (I know they really didn't change much except to offer Black Sapphire)
Timing in life (and buying cars and bikes) is everything!!! :)

I doubt 5 months = the price disparity you're hinting at.

I doubt 5 months = the price disparity you're hinting at.
It's not the 5 months, it is end of model year versus middle of model year and seasonal demand.
I bet a lot more people buy new bikes in March then in August!
But I assume december, january and February are when the best deals are!
Also geographic location makes a big difference because of differences in riding/buying season.
Believe it or not, what day of the month is huge. you month want to buy on the last day of the month!
Trust me here, my brother is the sales Mgr.. at a Benz dealership. No question, they deal on the last day of the month. there are motivator that are not apparent to the apparent. Joe customer.
For example, xtra dealer incentive for hitting X number of units for the month.
if they are 2 units away and get a big check, guess what, they are really motivated to sell, even take a loss on a sale, that puts x-tra $$$ in the dealers pocket.
Moral of the story is good on you for getting a good deal that particular day you bought, THIS DOES NOT MEAN EVERYONE CAN CUT THAT SAME DEAL!!!
Lotsa factors involved. throw a trade in and it becomes even more convoluted.
When you say "Out the door" you mean including Tax & License you bought an '08 RT with ESA, ASC, Heated Grips & Seats,OBC,TPM, White turn Indicators, Cruise control & Assessory socket.

Do yourself a favor.
Buy a preowned '08. You will save alot of money if you do it right, still get warranty, and get the same bike...

I could not say it any simpler. I bought Ruby at 7 months old w/4K miles on her in perfect shape and saved $5500 vs. buying new which I never do in the first place. :D

my philosophy on buying cars or bikes has
always been that no matter what you pay for
it, you could have bought it cheaper the next
day. do the best you can and don't look back.
I know I should have done better on the price of
my RT, but that's history now.......

Your "package" sounds a LOT more attractive than my L.A. County price BUT I seem to be in the minority here - I've worked for (auto) dealers and they are NOT the cash cows that everyone perceives them to be and profit margins are pretty slim these days.
Grinding a dealer into the ground on a deal will just guarantee that they won't be there later on when you really need them......we're all in business to make money (that's why we get out of bed in the morning, right?)
(flame away if you wish - I've got a thick hide :stir: )

Well Keith1, someone has to buy new for us to get the deals on used bikes I guess.
I won't be the one. That's for sure. Buy new, save a few bucks if you can. Buy almost new and save a fortune!! That is the way it goes.
A friend in our local club just bought an '08 with 3K on it for 14,500.. That's new enough for me...

Amen to that statement. As far as your friend getting the deal on the 08, I did a bit better than that price wise on Ruby and she only had a 1K more miles. It is all about being in the right place at the right time. Thanks to ALL who buy new bikes.

I don't know what people feel is fair to pay for an RT, or how much someone thinks is a "fair" profit, without knowing the dealer overhead that becomes purely a guess. However, there are many dealers hurting this year due to the economy. If you get hooked up with one of those dealers there are some selling at below cost. Presumably that is "fair" enough.
Someone mentioned doc fees. Back in the old days the OEM pricing contained higher margins. As the years have gone by the margins have decreased while in general dealership cost-of-doing-business has increased and somewhere along the line doc fees became wide spread. I'll leave it to the buyer to determine if that is fair or not.
With current economic conditions we are now witnessing severe drops in unit sales in many areas of the country. Combine that with low margins and you now have a recipe for disaster for many dealers. Although the newspapers never discuss motorcycle stores as they do car stores, the same scenario is occuring in the motorcycle industry. Honda sales are literally down 50% nationwide; under that scenario you typically go out of business at some point unless you're able to stem the losses.
Be kind to your local dealer if he takes care of you as he/she just might be the next business casualty in your town.

I bought my 2002RS used, and the reason I bought my new bike where I did was how they treated me and dealt with me with a bike I didn't buy there.
They earned THIS sale over the last 3 years.
That and I won a set of Moto lights at one of their open houses and felt obligated.. :wave
Not a bad deal for Motolights either, as that was the first accessory I bought for the new bike..

Hi,
I just purchased a 2009 RT in June. It was listed for $20,950.00. It had all the options Except for Tire Monitor System, and Alarm System. The dealer knocked $950.00 off the price, plus they gave me $1,200.00 in BMW Accesories of my choice. Got some head gaurds, Great BMW Touring boots, Side case panniers, Oil filters, BMW Sunglasses, BMW RT Tank Bag. Plus they gave me a very good deal on my GS in trade. It was the end of the month. I was very pleased, Everyone has to make some money. Plus they are a very good dealership, very well liked, BMW, Ducati, Aprilla, Touring Sport, Greenville, South Carolina. I'm very happy. I also changend my oil and rear drive, then had the 600 mile service done for Just $275.00. I'll do the rest of the services myself. That's why I love the Boxer Engine.

At the MOA rally, the BMW rep announced $500 off any BMW motorcycle purchased in the next month for MOA members. You may want to look into that as well.
This is above and beyond any deals from your dealer.
