I've got Metzlers now with 11,000 miles on them, looks like they'll go a little while longer.
I'm looking at the Bridgestone Battlax BT-021, and the Conti Force and Conti Road Attack.
Anyone have experience with these? How's the wet/dry roadholding? Tire life?
It's impossible to tell from the manufacturer's descriptions.

The best handling tire I've experienced is the Conti Road Attack . I'm on my second set in 12K miles so don't expect high mileage but they really grip in wet and dry . They suck in sand though and dumped my butt last weekend at Bike Week. LOL

Seriously though, If I did more slab riding I'd have to give up the handling for more mileage but I love carving up canyons and mountain passes at high lean angles and trust the Conti Road Attacks' for that. I love the grip in the wet too.

I have run two sets of BT020' and yes that is BT020's and got about 6K miles per set. The wet/dry handling was fine. For longevity you cannot beat the ME880's. So far I have 4260 miles on my ME880's. I expect I will get another 4K out of the front tire and at least 5-6K out of the rear tire. After running off 3 sets of tires in the first year I think I have found my tire (ME880). I was totally sick of spending $300 for a set of tires and only getting 5K-6K miles out of them. So far I have had no issues with handling or stickage.

+1 I am on my second set - things handle like a dream - real carvers

My original tires were Conti Sport Attacks and they handled and wore very well.

When I replaced them at 10.5k miles I selected Pilot Road 2's and am extremely happy with them, they have great grip, excellent turn in and feedback. Also I think they are better in the rain than the Conti's.

Either tire is very good but from my perspective I prefer the PR2's and will probably replace with same if I get the same level of milage out of them

Here and elsewhere, the Conti Road Attacks and the Pilot Road 2 are being given high marks.
After checking my Metzelers for unexpected cord appearances (per recommendations), it appears the rear is closer to retirement than the front. Is there any reason why I can't change the rear w/o changing the front?

As long as it's the same brand and model. Mixing brands and models can have negative effects on handling. As for wear, I typically goe two rears to one front on the motorcycles I've owned. Conti Road Attacks came stock on my 2008 and so far in the 250 miles I have managed to squeek in this winter, I'm loving them. Great dry and wet traction and it's only 41 degrees out. Can't wait to get more aggressive in warmer weather. My other motorcycle is an Aprillia Futura with Dunlop D220's. I like both tires equally. I haven't heard of anyone using them on an R1200RT in this forum though. I tend to stick with what works. I'll most likely buy Conti Road Attacks again if they continue to perform throughout their life.

I'm using Dunlop Roadsmarts. Much better than the Z6's they replaced, they have excellent grip in the wet with more feedback as to when it will let go.

Mate of mine has yet to try the Conti's, but he has used Z6's Pilot Road 2's and is now on Roadsmarts too, he prefers them over the others. I 'spose it depends on the weather you suffer aswell.
