Wife and I will be taking the long way around to get to CCR, i.e., La to Miss to Tenn to Ken to West Virginia to Virg to n.c to s.c and then to Ga. I read an article in some mc mag a while back about a gorge/bridge in West Virginia that is supposed to be worth the drive to see. Anyone know what/where that is? I believe it is along or not to far from the BlueRidge Parkway? Tanks. Bruce and Laura '99 k1200lt - trike.

You may be talking about the Linn Cove Viaduct, certainly one of the prettiest places on the Blue ridge Parkway.

I think you are refering to the New River Gorge

Mike is undoubtedly correct about this - it's the New River Gorge Bridge, not far from Beckley in WV. Be sure to ride your bike to the bottom of the gorge, cross the New River on a rickety old low bridge, and ride up the other side. There's room on that rickety bridge for you to stop and take pictures - cages can get by you - couldn't stop and get out if you were in a cage. If I recall correctly, they bungee-jump off the New River Gorge Bridge one day a year. It's REALLY high! Enjoy.
Oh ... in its own, very different way, the Linville Cove Bridge on the BRP is cool, too - beautiful scenery there. It's often described as an "engineering marvel" - is a bridge in the shape of an "S", cantilevered off the side of a hill, all that unusual? Nobody bungee-jumps from the Linville Cove Bridge, tho.

Cool sounds like a bridge I need to check out next spring.
I haven't met Allen,
but I'm pretty sure that he's like me and just wants to ride his motorcycle across the bridge
rather than jump of tied to a rubber band. :)

Just a point to illustrate how bloody high the bridge is, Hans - it's WAY up there. Simply riding across the bridge doesn't do it justice; you'd hardly notice what a spectacular structure it is, if that's all you did. You really need to ride down to the bottom of the gorge where you can look up at the monster, cross the river and ride up the other side.
And if loose nuts happened to be bungee-jumping off the bridge that day, well ... it'd be good for a few neat photos.

That is the one I was looking for. We will try it both ways, so to speak.

You really won't see much if you just cross the bridge. Riding down in the valley is the only way to really appreciate it. You can also pull over before you cross the bridge, (you used to be able to) if heading North and really get a good view.
Bridge cut about 30 minutes off of the drive, but really made a great spot to base jump from.

The road down to the river from the Visitor's Center is steep, has some tight turns and you'll need to watch out for loose gravel. It is definitely worth the trip. It reminds me of the road we used to cross the Alps at Furka Pass.

Another thing you can do while in the Gorge area, is go to Hawk's Nest State Park and ride the jet boat up the river to where you can see the Bridge --- you won't go under it on this boat ride but you will be approaching some of the rough water, and get nice photos of the bridge while there.

I grew up about 30 miles south of the bridge (bridge was not there at the time) and did all of my early riding throughout the state. Just about anywhere you ride, you will have lots of twist, turns and changing elevations. It is a great state to get lost. You will discover a lot of great places to ride. Greatest fear though, as someone else said, is the dirt and loose gravel on a turn. There are many mountains with very little traffic. Makes for a great ride. Sure do miss it, living in Florida!
